THE CANUCK PREVAILS IN GUARDIAN 30 MATCH-UP FAN VOTING INITIATIVE VS THE AVALANCHE
Team’s Superhero Character Image and Details Uncovered
LOS ANGELES, CA (January 17, 2011) – The Vancouver Canucks-Colorado Avalanche rivalry continued online in the Guardian 30 Match-Up Facebook challenge, with Canucks fans casting the most votes to meet their team’s new superhero character, The Canuck. The full unveiling of all 30 Guardian superhero characters within the Guardian Project will be held in a special presentation during the 2011 NHL® All-Star Game presented by Discover in Raleigh, N.C. on Sunday, January 30 (4 p.m. ET live broadcast on VERSUS in the U.S. and on CBC and RDS in Canada).
The Canuck is tough, fearless and not afraid of physical work. In look, he is mostly human, combined with certain attributes of a killer whale. He has a massive cape attached to his waist that enables him to shift shape. While the Canuck cannot fly, he can propel himself out of the water to great heights. Like all aquatic mammals, the Canuck uses a hyper sensitive form of echolocation that enables him to track enemies at sea. The Canuck has two main super abilities, one of which is a form of natural empathy in which he can summon rain and during the ensuing rainstorm, he can fashion the resulting downpour into any number of offensive or defensive weapons. He also has the power of summoning his whale friends to come to his aid when necessary. Hidden in the Canuck’s wrist guards and boots are retractable spikes that assist him in maneuvering through the tree tops. It’s an odd sight watching this half killer whale character bounding through the trees but it’s completely natural to this most contrarian of Guardians.
“Originally, we were thinking of the Canuck as a burly lumberjack with lots of mechanical weapons. But it never really looked right so we offered a more aquatic character to the team that focused on the logo,” said Tony Chargin, EVP of GME Creative Affairs. “Who doesn’t love a character that has killer whales for best friends?”
With the highly anticipated unveiling of the 30 individual Guardians within the Guardian Project, the Guardian 30 Match-Up is a Facebook application that enables fans to determine the order in which each team’s Guardian will be unveiled. Launched on December 20, hockey fans determine which team wins each match-up, with team superhero character revealed daily.
Created and developed by Stan Lee, Chargin, and Jake Shapiro, each Guardian has been derived from its corresponding NHL team, complete with special powers representative of each team and city.
With an initial plan to reach an all-family audience and narrower target demo of tween boys, GME hopes to bring a new audience to the NHL, while engaging the existing, established hockey fan base through a compelling tale of good vs. evil.
Fans can continue to vote for their favorites and learn about the Guardian Project and the individual Guardians, as they’re unveiled, at www.guardianproject30.com and by going to www.facebook.com/theguardianproject.
