*A Grand Walk. Since the early 1900s, the legendary Flying Wallendas have been famed for performing high-wire acts without a safety net, which have resulted in numerous deaths and debilitating injuries. When Nik Wallenda walked across a section of Niagara Falls on national TV in June 2012, however, the network required him to wear a tether. Millions watched as Wallenda successfully crossed the Falls, but he felt unfulfilled without the element of danger. On Sunday, Nik attempted his latest dangerous stunt as he walked a quarter-mile gap of the Grand Canyon on a steel wire with no tethers or safety nets. REAL SPORTS was at the Grand Canyon as the 34-year-old daredevil prepared for his record-breaking walk. Frank Deford reports.
Producers: Tim Walker, Beret Remak.
REAL SPORTS was the sole sports program recognized by the University of Georgia’s Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication with a 2012 George F. Peabody Award for broadcast excellence. In addition, it is the only sports program ever honored with the duPont Award, first in 2005, and again in 2012.
At the 34th Annual Sports Emmy® Awards on May 7, REAL SPORTS captured two trophies, for Outstanding Edited Sports Series and for Outstanding Long Feature for the Aug. 2012 profile of former New Orleans Saints player Steve Gleason. REAL SPORTS has won the Sports Emmy® for Outstanding Sports Journalism 15 times and has received 25 Sports Emmy® Awards overall.
