On Thursday’s Course Conditions at The Ocean Course
Brandel Chamblee: “Today, this course was like a pit bull with no teeth. Absolutely soft conditions. No wind to speak of. However, there is an ominous forecast for tomorrow. It is supposed to storm in the afternoon. The wind is going to blow all day. It’s going to be like a pit bull with a bad tooth tomorrow.”
On What is Realistic With John Daly This Week at the PGA Championship
Nobilo: “With John, anything. Nothing. All of the above. I have played with John many times. He is such a draw to the blue collar worker. People relate to him because he plays golf like they play golf. Grip it, rip it. Hit it, find it. Play like there is no tomorrow. The crowd always follows him around because he is exactly what he looks like. If he is going through a bad patch, it looks terrible. When he is going through a good patch, it looks great. He never has hidden from anyone. He is probably the most transparent person I have met in my life…There will be so many people rooting for John. I hope it is possible.”
Chamblee: “Everybody sees the potential in John Daly, and, even from distance, they want to be a father-figure to him…What if he puts it all together. Maybe he does win a third major championship. If he does, there are no players that have won three major championships that are not in the Hall of Fame.”

On Opening Round Leader Carl Pettersson and his European Ryder Cup Chances
Frank Nobilo: “It’s a Ryder Cup year. He is the forgotten European…This year, he won in Hilton Head, and he is on the outside looking in from a long way back. For some unknown reason, the Europeans seem to have forgotten about this guy, yet it is very hard to find a European with more wins in America than Carl, that is currently playing this tour.”
Ken Schofield (former European Tour Executive Director): “Frank alluded earlier to the fact that in Ryder Cup years, recently he has been Europe’s forgotten man. He has multiple wins in the United States and he did win in Europe before coming here. But the bottom line is there are some valid reasons why Carl has been forgotten. For some 10 years, Carl has really forgotten Europe. The bottom line is, he has chosen not to be a member of the Tour, and that basically means he is not going to make a really valid effort to try to qualify. He is at the behest of Jose Maria. He better try and win.”
