Pulaski Academy High School football coach Kevin Kelley has made headlines from his strange, data-driven play tactics. Novel techniques, such as never punting and always on-side kicking, have given him the edge over almost every other team in the nation.
In “Undefeated,” a new short film from FiveThirtyEight and ESPN Films debuting today, Kelley and his team travel to Dallas to face their rivals, Highland Park — a team that has won 84 games in a row at home and out-played Pulaski Academy last year. Directed by Jamie Schutz, the film follows Kelly’s team as they prepare for the game, add a new wrinkle to this season’s playbook and learn about his unmatched methodology.
The Collectors is a ten-film series available exclusively on FiveThirtyEight, WatchESPN and ABC News, that tells the stories of an eclectic group of characters collecting data, ranging from the official scorer at a baseball game, to a meteorologist tracking hurricanes. Each of the shorts depicts how these individuals gather information, and how their judgment in translating ambiguity into hard numbers can shape how the world is viewed and interpreted. The series, which is a project out of ESPN content unit Exit 31, debuted on Dec. 10, 2014 with “Food Cartographers.”
