Olympic Channel: Home of Team USA Presents Full Week of Programming to Celebrate Shiffrin’s Record-Breaking Season, Beginning April 8
STAMFORD, Conn. – March 13, 2019 – As the new recordholder for most World Cup victories in a single season (15), two-time Olympic gold medalist Mikaela Shiffrin concludes her historic season this week at the alpine skiing World Cup Finals in Soldeu, Andorra.
Shiffrin, who turns 24 today, enters the final weekend of this season after breaking Vreni Schneider’s 30-year record for the most single-season wins in the World Cup’s 53 season-history. Shiffrin’s win last weekend marked her seventh World Cup slalom win of the season and her 39th career World Cup slalom victory, the most ever in women’s slalom and one shy of the all-time record. This season, she became the seventh woman to win a World Cup race in all five major disciplines.
In Andorra, she is expected compete in the women’s super-G, the slalom, and the giant slalom, aiming to become the seventh skier (and third American, after Phil Mahre and Lindsey Vonn) to win four World Cup titles in a single season. She has already clinched the season-long World Cup overall and slalom titles and is pursuing her first giant slalom and super-G titles. She leads the World Cup standings in both disciplines heading into the final races of the season.
