The touching story of an NBA star and the bond he developed with a dying child will open the new season of SC Featured, ESPN SportsCenter’s award-winning storytelling brand, on Sunday, Feb. 14.
The first SC Featured of the 2016 season is “The Meaning of Miyah,” a story of the friendship between 6 year-old Miyah, who lost her battle with non-Hodgkin lymphoma, and Washington Wizards star John Wall.
Premiering in 2013, the SC Featured brand brings unique and compelling feature stories to viewers of Sunday editions of ESPN’s flagship news and information program. SC Featured stories air on SportsCenter during the months of the NFL offseason, debuting in the 10 a.m. ET edition with a re-air in the 11 p.m. program and at other times throughout the day.
“Our goal every week with SC Featured is to surprise and entertain the viewer,” said Victor Vitarelli, senior coordinating producer, ESPN Features Unit, which produces SC Featured. “We look forward to bringing more of the sports world’s most interesting stories to SportsCenter and we’re confident fans are going to be excited about the features that we have planned.”
As part of ESPN’s Black History Month observance, the Sunday, Feb. 21, SC Featured will tell the story of Chubbtown, Ga., the home of University of Georgia running back Nick Chubb. The historic town was formed by his ancestors, free black families who settled in the area during the Civil War. The feature is reported by Byron Pitts of ABC News.
Other SC Featured pieces airing in the coming months include:
ADULT DODGEBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS – The beloved/feared physical education game is not just for kids anymore.
GOTHAM KNIGHTS AND THE BINGHAM CUP – The largely gay rugby team was formed in tribute to Mark Bingham, a gay man and former college rugby player who was believed to have been one of the passengers who fought off hijackers on United flight 93 which crashed in a Pennsylvania field on 9/11.
MONKEY BUSINESS – An exploration of the urban legend of a monkey believed to have lived for years in the old Boston Garden, narrated by comedian Lenny Clarke.
Since its creation 13 years ago, the ESPN Features Unit has received 56 Sports Emmy Award nominations resulting in 12 Emmys.
One of SC Featured’s most popular segments of 2015 was Isaiah Bird: No Excuses, which told the story of 7-year-old wrestler Isaiah Bird, who was born with no legs and developed a remarkable bond with his coach, who became like a father. The feature had a strong presence on social media, including some 2.5 million views, with 2.2 million coming from Twitter. It also was SC Featured’s most-viewed segment on Facebook for the year.
