Middleweight champ Sergio Martinez (45-2-2, 24 KOs), who was born in Argentina and now hails from Oxnard, Cal., meets two-time welterweight titleholder Paul Williams (39-1-0, 27 KOs) of Augusta, Ga. in a 12-round rematch. Last December, these two southpaws traded knockdowns in the opening round, going on to battle for a dozen spirited rounds, with Williams earning a majority decision that left fans wanting more. Many argued that the bout, a candidate for fight of the year, was too close to call, fueling anticipation for this eagerly awaited rematch.
Currently the two best middleweights in the world, these highly touted fighters are on everyone’s pound-for-pound list. Martinez is fresh off a resounding middleweight triumph over Kelly Pavlik. Williams, often labeled “the most avoided fighter in the world,” stuns opponents with an enormous 82-inch reach, which allows him to batter his prey with punches from the outside.
Starting off the telecast will be the exclusive replay of Manny Pacquiao vs. Antonio Margarito as HBO presents the super welterweight title showdown. The fight took place last Saturday night at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Tex. and Pacquiao delivered a masterful performance with a dominating victory over the taller and heavier fighter.
All HBO boxing events are broadcast in HDTV. HBO viewers must have access to the HBO HDTV channel to watch HBO programming in high definition.
The executive producer of WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING is Rick Bernstein; producer, Thomas Odelfelt; director, Marc Payton.
