Minnesota Vikings QB Teddy Bridgewater with NFL Network’s Melissa Stark
Minnesota Vikings rookie quarterback Teddy Bridgewater sat down with NFL Network’s Melissa Stark for an interview on NFL GameDay First.
On starting his first career NFL game:
“It’s a dream come true for me to able to get my first start on this level. The time has presented itself, and I don’t want to just start this one game. This is a deal that I want to be in for a long time.”
On being the starting quarterback:
“We just have to focus on getting the ball out of my hands, and allowing my playmakers on the outside and the guys in the back field to make plays. Just taking what the defense gives us.”

Quotes from NFL GameDay First
Every Sunday morning at 7:00 AM ET, NFL Network is first on the field with NFL GameDay First. Host Melissa Stark, co-host/analyst Sterling Sharpe, and analysts Shaun O’Hara and Michael Robinson provide the first analysis of the day’s games, while NFL Network reporters stationed across the league report from stadiums with the first on-location reports of the day.
– “We’re going to be talking soon about him being the best quarterback in the league. The sky is the limit for the Colts because the guy under center, Andrew Luck, is as good as it gets.” – Steve Mariucci on Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck
– “I will relax when I start to see this team looking like they said they were going to look coming out of training camp. That is Eddie Lacy running for a 115, 120 [yards], averaging about four-and-a-half yards a carry. I want to see some balance between the offensive line blocking and Eddie Lacy with some gash runs. I haven’t seen that so far this year.” – Sterling Sharpe on Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rogers telling Packers fans to relax
– “It’s going to be a physical affair. Steve Smith is still upset that his 13-year career in Carolina came to an end and it didn’t end the way he wanted. So what has he done? He’s gone out the first three weeks and he’s played even more angry than he normally plays. That attitude has been infectious with that offense.” – Sterling Sharpe on Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Steve Smith playing his former team, the Carolina Panthers
– “Getting the tight end involved helps Eli [Manning] and helps this entire offense. They are a force in the NFC East.” – Shaun O’Hara on if the New York Giants can contend in the NFC East
– “Geno [Smith] is perfect for this offensive system…He has to be a lot more careful with the ball in the red zone, but this team is about five or six plays away from being undefeated.” – Michael Robinson on why Geno Smith should remain the New York Jets quarterback
– “Marty Mornhinweg needs to rely on the Jimmy’s and Joe’s, not the X’s and O’s. He can’t always try to scheme everybody and try to get into the perfect play call. He has to kind of just trust Geno.” – Michael Robinson on what New York Jets offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg needs to change
Quotes from NFL GameDay Morning
NFL GameDay Morning is the most comprehensive pregame show on Sunday morning, airing at 9:00 AM ET for four hours on NFL Network and taking viewers straight up to kickoff. Host Rich Eisen joins analysts Steve Mariucci, Marshall Faulk, Kurt Warner, Warren Sapp and Michael Irvin to bring fans the latest news, injury reports, pregame analysis and game previews. Additionally, NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport provides the latest inside information from around the league.
– “They’re in trouble and it all starts up front: the offensive line. That’s where it starts. If you watch Aaron Rodgers, he’s just not trusting the guys up front. The ball when it comes out, it doesn’t look like his eyes are downfield. I’m worried about this team because where on defense they used to have problems and offensively they used to mask it, right now they’re struggling on offense.” – Marshall Faulk on the 1-2 Green Bay Packers
– “They don’t have the talent around Aaron Rodgers. We keep thinking that Aaron Rodgers can just lift this thing up and he cannot. He needs better talent around him.” – Michael Irvin on the Green Bay Packers
– “If they’re going to relax, they have to change what they’re doing. They have to change their approach offensively…Five letters if you don’t adjust: P-A-N-I-C.” – Kurt Warner on the Green Bay Packers
– “This is not single’s tennis – Aaron [Rodgers] can’t do it by himself.” – Steve Mariucci on Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers
– “There are three things that are a must that you have to trust as a runner: you have to trust your talent, you have to trust your eyes and you must trust your offensive line. Right now, he’s not trusting his offensive line, so therefore his eyes are lying to him and he doesn’t believe he has the talent to get where he needs to go.” – Marshall Faulk on Green Bay Packers running back Eddie Lacy
– “It’s that time of the season when you really have to forge your identity. I say the San Francisco 49ers defensive front will look like their old selves and get after Nick Foles today, and try to be the reason why they win the game, not lose the game.” – Marshall Faulk on the San Francisco 49ers defense
– “There are issues going on on the football field, there are issues going on in the front office and it is all finding itself to the field.” – Michael Irvin on the 1-2 San Francisco 49ers
– “This is a guy who plays with emotion so you want to force-feed him in a game like this. Get him the ball and let him do what he does to intimidate the other team.” – Kurt Warner on Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Steve Smith facing his former team, the Carolina Panthers
– “He and Andrew Luck are those up-and-coming quarterbacks that once Peyton [Manning], [Tom] Brady, [Drew] Brees and [Aaron] Rodgers have moved on or they’ve gotten older, we’re going to be sitting here comparing other quarterbacks to the two of them.” – Marshall Faulk on Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson and Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck
– “You have to put him in there…If you’re basing that judgment off of winning, how he plays in big games and clutch moments and coming through, I think you have put him in that discussion.” – Richard Sherman on if Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson should be in the ‘best quarterback in the league’ conversation
– “I hope we see them again. I wouldn’t mind that. I don’t know about ‘closing gaps’ and all that. They played a good ballgame – we should have been able to pull away. We should have been able to make the plays to put the game away. It shouldn’t have been that close.” – Richard Sherman on if the Denver Broncos closed the gap with the Seattle Seahawks after a 26-20 overtime victory
– “We do things differently. We have a close-knit group. In the NFL, it’s such a business they say you can’t have a family-like atmosphere in the locker room – we try to have that. We really care about our teammates.” – Richard Sherman on the Seattle Seahawks
NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport
On the Carolina Panthers’ decision to part ways with wide receiver Steve Smith:
“I’ve talked to Panthers sources about this over the last couple of days. It is not because they thought Steve Smith couldn’t play; that’s been his personal view on this as there’s been some sound that we’ve heard over the last couple days and weeks from him declaring that they thought that he could not play. Panthers’ sources told me that’s not true. They’re not surprised that he’s been as productive as he is. Really what it was is they were going younger, they were going cheaper and they believe Steve Smith would continue to become a disruptive force in the locker room for this young team, especially for this young quarterback. At the Combine, general manager Dave Gettleman said they were evaluating what to do with Steve Smith. He heard that [and] blew up the situation. I’m told he asked to be released, would not take a pay cut [and] essentially forced the Panthers’ hand. They tried to trade him. They had to cut him. They know that his own personal bulletin board is fueling this fire this week. They haven’t said hardly anything. They’re going to hopefully let it play out on the field.”
On former Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith:
“From what I understand, Cam Newton was a big source of frustration for Steve Smith. In fact, he told close friends he doesn’t believe Cam Newton sees the field at all, specifically in the red zone. What Steve Smith told friends is that Cam Newton doesn’t think fast enough or isn’t precise enough to succeed in the red zone. The stats do bear that out. Only two quarterbacks have been worse since 2011 in the red zone and his completion percentage [is] 44 percent in his career inside the 20 [yard line].”
On potential rule change to make some penalties reviewable:
“I’m told the NFL is on the verge of having personal foul penalties reviewable for the first time ever. Last year, the Redskins made this proposal of expanding instant replay to personal foul penalties. It failed by four votes. I’m now told four teams who voted against it are now set to vote for it. This is on the agenda when the Competition Committee meets in March. The likelihood is this is coming for the 2015 season. Now it might be at the start a little narrower – could be just hits on receivers – but it seems it’s coming.”
On San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh’s relationship with the players:
“The same thing I was hearing last year is the same thing I was hearing as the season was starting, same thing I’m hearing now. Some of it is from losing but I’m told especially the veterans are grumbling already about Jim Harbaugh and the voices are getting louder and louder. Some of the complaints include the fact that he kind of treats them like children. In fact, on planes I’m told they’re not allowed to play music, not allowed to play cards. Small things but these are the things that really can rankle players. Even though the players do get to sit in first class, [they] still get frustrated by that.”
On Michigan’s potential interest in John Harbaugh:
“There has been and will be speculation about Jim Harbaugh and Michigan…I am told by high-ranking Michigan sources they actually prefer John Harbaugh, the Ravens coach, over Jim Harbaugh, the 49ers coach, because of the longevity that he could give them. He could stay there awhile. Same Michigan ties; grew up in Ann Arbor, father of course coached there.”
On the decisions to start rookie quarterbacks Blake Bortles and Teddy Bridgewater:
“This was the decision the Jaguars essentially had forced upon them by the improvement that Blake Bortles made. In fact, I’m told by a Jaguars source, they felt like they had no choice with him. Chad Henne had played fine, had a good preseason, showed some improvement but even though they planned to redshirt Bortles at the beginning of the season, his improvement was so great that they really felt they had to play him. As the Jaguars source told me, there is no going back; this is Blake Bortles’ team. He’s smart, he’s physical, they believe he can evade the pressure that hit Chad Henne. It’s a little different for the Vikings. They were not ready to make the quarterback change from Matt Cassel but they are going to see Teddy Bridgewater today. He’s going to have the same playbook essentially that Matt Cassel had; Cassel we know is out for the season after having foot surgery earlier in the week. The noticeable thing for the Vikings and Teddy Bridgewater is how much of a leader he has been with every member of this team. He has associated himself with many different position groups, often eats lunch, lifts with the offensive linemen. They do believe that Teddy Bridgewater is ready to take over this football team.”
