NFL Media’s Kim Jones 1-on-1 with Buffalo Bills Head Coach Rex Ryan
NFL Media’s Kim Jones sat down with Buffalo Bills head coach Rex Ryan for an interview that aired on NFL Network’s NFL GameDay First and NFL GameDay Morning:
On if he likes his players making comments like Marcel Dareus saying “nobody likes the Patriots”:
“We’re different than anyone else. We don’t muzzle a guy and things, but this is who we are and that’s fine with me. Look, nobody likes me, I know that but I think that’s a compliment to the team. I hope nobody likes us next year, that they can’t stand the Bills. I think we’re on our way.”
On which team will win the AFC East:
“I don’t know but whoever wins it is going to have to earn it. I truly believe that our division is the strongest division in football. Whatever you do, don’t make the mistake of counting out the Buffalo Bills.”
On facing New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick:
“If it were a spelling bee we’d be in trouble. He’s been there and done it, he’s got all of the rings to prove it; his record against me is what it is. It’s tough; he definitely has the upper hand. But he knows I’m going to give him everything I have. You want to beat them, you want to beat the best. The last 10 years, obviously the Patriots are the class of the NFL so yeah you want to beat them more than anybody.”
On Buffalo Bills quarterback Tyrod Taylor:
“I like everything about him. Number one, I think he’s an intelligent guy. The second thing is I love his work ethic. Our conditioning test to start the summer, most times quarterbacks go with what we call the mid-skills or your big-skill guys; your tight ends, your fullbacks, stuff like that. But he jumped in with the wideouts, the running backs, the corners and he won every single one of them. So I think that sent a message to everybody what his plans were.”
On if it’s true he tried to trade for Tyrod Taylor when he was playing with the Baltimore Ravens:
“That’s a true statement…I don’t remember how many times but we kept trying and Ozzie [Newsome] kept saying no. And now we have him.”

NFL Media’s Andrea Kremer 1-on-1 with Arizona Cardinals Quarterback Carson Palmer
NFL Media’s Andrea Kremer sat down with Arizona Cardinals quarterback Carson Palmer for an interview that aired on NFL Network’s NFL GameDay Morning:
On if he is ahead of where he was last year:
“I think so. I think I’m mentally ahead. Physically it’s hard to say. But when you’re further ahead mentally, it helps you out more physically.”
On tearing his ACL against the St. Louis Rams last year:
“I just remember a familiar feeling in my knee and I knew it instantly. The physical pain is intense at first but nowhere near the mental pain. Just knowing that that was it for me that year. I don’t cry a whole lot but I balled. Lying in bed with my wife I just broke down and balled. My wife was saying, ‘Just get it out, go, go;’ I’m trying to stop, she’s trying to get it out of me because you have to, you have to move on. That morning I woke up and it was onto the next step.”
On if he is a better quarterback now than he has ever been:
“Should be. I had more people going what are you doing, why are you still playing? And I got so annoyed because I love football. I love playing. I want to win a Super Bowl. It’s about what I have in front of me and the opportunity to still play this game.”

Quotes from NFL GameDay First
Every Sunday morning at 7:00 AM ET, NFL Network is first on the field with NFL GameDay First. Host Melissa Stark, analysts Shaun O’Hara, Michael Robinson and Brian Billick, and NFL Media’s Jeffri Chadiha provide the first analysis of the day’s games, while NFL Network reporters stationed across the league report from stadiums with the first on-location reports of the day. Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly joined the show LIVE from his home.
– “Without a doubt, and if they don’t something seriously [goes] wrong…We have a very solid football team.” – Jim Kelly on the possibility of the Buffalo Bills ending their playoff drought
– “Coaching in New York can suck the football life out of you, simply because of the environment. I think we saw that in Rex Ryan: success early, the guys were all buying in but the longer you’re there, your relationship with the players, the media, the fans – it can tend to wear you down. But Rex is back to being Rex, and I don’t think he’s going to ever let it get away from him again.” – Brian Billick on Buffalo Bills head coach Rex Ryan
– “This is why the Giants signed him to this extra-long contract because of not just what he does on the field but how he handles the media and how he handles that locker room. Every player in that locker room trusts Eli and they’re going to rally behind him…I expect him to come out on fire. If I’m Ben McAdoo, I want Eli to throw for two touchdowns in the first quarter.” – Shaun O’Hara on New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning
– “He’s the most prepared quarterback I’ve ever played with – he’s the smartest quarterback I‘ve ever played with. To see him not be aware that I cannot stop the clock on this last play, that shocked me.” – Shaun O’Hara on New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning
– “If Carson Palmer can maintain this – and there’s no reason to think that he can’t – this truly can be a Super Bowl-caliber team.” – Brian Billick on the Arizona Cardinals
– “He has to get the ball more. Eight carries is not enough. DeMarco Murray gets better as the game goes on. You have to give 20-25 carries to really see the benefits of DeMarco Murray.” – Shaun O’Hara on Philadelphia Eagles running back DeMarco Murray
– “I would IR him…I don’t think he’s going to come back and if he does come back he will not be the [same] Dez Bryant.” – Michael Robinson on Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant
– “My concern would be that he feels like he has to do more and that can be dangerous with Tony Romo sometimes.” – Brian Billick on Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo
Quotes from NFL GameDay Morning
NFL GameDay Morning is the most comprehensive pregame show on Sunday morning, airing at 9:00 AM ET for four hours on NFL Network and taking viewers straight up to kickoff. Host Rich Eisen joins analysts Steve Mariucci, Marshall Faulk, Kurt Warner and Michael Irvin to bring fans the latest news, injury reports, pregame analysis and game previews. Additionally, NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport provides the latest inside information from around the league. Hall of Fame wide receiver Lynn Swann joined the show LIVE from Pittsburgh.
– “This is devastating news. Dez is not just the receptions and the yards and the touchdowns, he’s also the emotional leader for this team. He’s the one that’s walking up and down the sidelines saying, ‘Let’s go guys.’ So when you lose a Dez Bryant, you just don’t lose his physical gifts on the field, you lose that juice that he brings.” – Michael Irvin on Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant
– “They’ve got to find a way to run the football and go to the strength of their team and what we’ve all talked about from day one: best offensive line in football. It’s time to show it.” – Kurt Warner on the Dallas Cowboys in the absence of wide receiver Dez Bryant
– “He’s reliable because he doesn’t drop the ball. We’ve had receivers in Pittsburgh who had great speed who could do a lot of good things but they went down to Miami and they didn’t make all of the catches they should make. He is a much more reliable guy and he gives you more confidence that if there is an opportunity you give him, he’ll take advantage of it.” – Lynn Swann on Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Antonio Brown
– “If [Carlos Hyde] can continue to run like this behind this offensive line, the San Francisco 49ers are going to win a lot more games than we thought with all of the losses that they had.” – Marshall Faulk on San Francisco 49ers running back Carlos Hyde
– “[Ken Whisenhunt] was able to adjust the offense to my strengths; he did it with Philip Rivers, he’s doing it with Marcus Mariota…[Whisenhunt] has done a great job with Mariota, especially early, [saying], ‘What do you do well, what are you comfortable with – let’s do a lot of that and grow you into a complete quarterback.’” – Kurt Warner on Tennessee Titans head coach Ken Whisenhunt and quarterback Marcus Mariota
NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport
On Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant:
“Sources tell me that Dez Bryant is now expected to be out 10-12 weeks following foot surgery that he had on Monday. This is far longer than the initial estimates the team received. They thought he would be out four to six weeks after he broke the fifth metatarsal in his foot and had a screw inserted on Monday. But now I’m told Bryant’s procedure also included a bone graft which takes the time from four to six to 10 to 12 weeks. If you look at the schedule, this means Bryant could not be on the field potentially until December. Now when I talked to an expert about this, what this actually means is a bone graft is something that surgeon’s use to promote healing in the area but sometimes it indicates chronic component to this injury. That could be the case with Bryant but either way the Cowboys know now that they will be without hum for an extended period of time.”
On how the Dallas Cowboys replace Dez Bryant:
“They did trade for Brice Butler, a player who they think will be a contributor from the Oakland Raiders. But they really do believe in the core of this team. They think they have enough receivers to get by; Terrance Williams, Cole Beasley for instance. In training camp, the Cowboys didn’t have Dez Bryant for several weeks and just talking to members of their staff, they are confident because Tony Romo got significant reps with these guys. Plus, remember they have a strong offensive line and they think now they are a running team first and foremost, so they have confidence they’ll be able to get by without Bryant.”
On the Seattle Seahawks and safety Kam Chancellor:
“Nothing has changed this week. The two sides still have not spoken for more than a week, so the standoff continues. What we do not know is if the Seahawks go 0-2, will the local pressure mount enough for the Seahawks to start to bend and once again begin negotiations with Kam Chancellor? All of that being said, let me give you a little bit of understanding for how important this is in the organization. Owner Paul Allen, who rarely gets involved with football matters and is simply not a voice in the day-to-day operations of the Seahawks, he has been informed of every single development and he is standing behind general manager John Schneider’s stance to not negotiate and hold firm as it relates to Kam Chancellor. But again, what we do not know is if today’s result will change that or if Kam Chancellor will be back in the Legion of Boom anytime soon.”
On the decision to name Ryan Mallett the starting quarterback for the Houston Texans:
“I talked to a couple of Texans sources over the last couple days to explain this. What I’m told is there are several reasons. First of all, Mallett did provide a spark and just taking the pulse of this locker room, this is something the players really wanted just after the boost that Mallett gave the team late last week. In addition, the way he handled the discipline that he received from oversleeping earlier in training camp and the way he handled being told that Brian Hoyer was the starter earlier in training camp as well was something that really impressed this team. He was ready, he was a professional and when his time was called, he showed up and acted like he had been preparing the whole time. Plus, the lack of negative plays that go on when Ryan Mallett is the starter and is under center is something the team really likes. They trust their defense to make plays – they just need their offense to keep them out of bad situations. All of this being said, Ryan Mallett is the starter now and going forward. But just like Brian Hoyer, he needs to continue to perform.”
On New York Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul:
“A couple of things we know. First of all, there are no surgical procedures planned for JPP’s hand. So right now, it is all about healing. There is an aggressive situation, an aggressive timeframe now to try to get him ready. We know he’s posted some videos on Instagram just to show the team how ready he is. We also know that in addition to his index finger, a piece of his thumb was taken off because of his situation and because of his accident. But what I am told just talking to a source involved in the situation, do not be surprised if independent doctor steps in and makes the determination between the team and the player of when exactly he is ready; this would happen in the form of a grievance just in case the team and the player can’t decide when he is actually healthy and when he will pass a physical and be able to be on the field.”
