Quotes from NFL GameDay First
Every Sunday morning at 7:00 AM ET, NFL Network is first on the field with NFL GameDay First. Host Melissa Stark, co-host/analyst Sterling Sharpe, and analysts Shaun O’Hara and Michael Robinson provide the first analysis of the day’s games, while NFL Network reporters stationed across the league report from stadiums with the first on-location reports of the day.
– “They’re a bottom-line football team: they’ll do whatever it takes to win a football game. They can win 41-40. They can win 10-7. It’s hard to find a football team other than New England that can do those things.” – Sterling Sharpe on the New England Patriots
– “I really think they’re built to win a championship especially because of the versatility in the back end of the secondary…They really put your offense in a bad position.” – Michael Robinson on the New England Patriots
– “When you go on that playoff run, when you get in the AFC and NFC Championship Games, when you get in the Super Bowl, what wins games is getting to the quarterback. The Green Bay Packers, they have better pass rushers than the New England Patriots.” – Shaun O’Hara on the Green Bay Packers
– “He’s not as big and I don’t know if he runs as physical but he reminds me a lot of Terrell Davis because he doesn’t miss holes.” – Sterling Sharpe on Baltimore Ravens running back Justin Forsett
– “I think he has to go to a place where he sees rock bottom. He has to challenge himself as a man – not RGIII but Robert Griffin – challenge yourself and work on your craft. Work on being a quarterback. Don’t work on your brand, don’t work on your Twitter site, don’t work on your Facebook site – work on doing your job and that’s being a quarterback first in the National Football League.” – Michael Robinson on Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III
– “The answer to that is no and I only say that because of what they gave up to get him. I think they gave up too much to get rid of RGIII at this point. They’re going to give him every opportunity.” – Shaun O’Hara on if quarterback Robert Griffin III has played his final game in a Washington Redskins uniform
– “The thing that really surprised me was the Eagles defense…They’re the number two seed right now in the NFC. They’re for real and it’s because of their defense.” – Shaun O’Hara on the Philadelphia Eagles in their win over the Dallas Cowboys
– “The Detroit Lions are for real because they have that portable entity: a defense that travels. It works in the dome, it works outside – it works at the Super Bowl.” – Sterling Sharpe on the Detroit Lions
Cleveland Browns Wide Receiver Josh Gordon with Nate Burleson
NFL Network analyst Nate Burleson sat down with Cleveland Browns wide receiver Josh Gordon for an interview on NFL GameDay Morning:
On if he’s thankful he has another chance to play in the NFL:
“Definitely thankful…It’s been an up and down roller coaster ride throughout my entire career. So we’re really just looking for that even plateau to just level things off, get things going smoothly and never look back. I hit every pitfall and rock bottom there is to hit.”
On the difference between the Josh Gordon off the field last year and now:
“The Josh Gordon off the field from last year, it was due to the Josh Gordon on the field from last year. Most of that trouble I think stemmed off of the crazy hysteria that was happening after the season. It was just so much free time, so much publicity and opportunities and people coming at you, and just being careless and reckless.”
On his lowest point:
“The lowest point of all this was a lot of friends you thought were close or you thought you were kind of cool with really not checking on you anymore, [not] hitting you up anymore, [not] wanting to hang out. As far as even people in here [with the Browns]. I don’t want to throw names around but I can see it. I’m definitely really observant so I see how people might just be more standoffish. It’s kind of like a disease. People they want to see it but they don’t really want to touch it. That’s kind of how it was. Really just having to be a loner.”
On what he would say to fans who bought his jersey and put it away because of his failed drug tests:
“I don’t think necessarily what I do right now is even for them. More so for myself and that’s really what I’m trying to focus on. If I can focus on making myself happy and a whole person, getting everything straight within my life, then the rest will follow itself. The people that bought my jersey, much appreciated. They expect more from guys in the NFL so that’s what I’m trying to give to them.”
On why he believes the Cleveland Browns have a chance to do something special:
“I just think we want it more than anybody else. The city of Cleveland wants it more than anybody else. These guys have been here with me the past three years, guys like Joe Thomas – he’s been here his whole career. That’s really starting to rub off on the rest of the guys, seeing how hungry the rest of us are. Nobody really wants to win as bad I think as the Cleveland Browns do.”
On what the last chapter of the book on his life will be:
“Right now I’m 23 years old, third year in the league. I have a lot left in me and I don’t think I’ve yet reached my pinnacle in the game. That’s all I want, just the credibility from dedicating my life and the time I put into the game of football. That’s all I want.”

Quotes from NFL GameDay Morning
NFL GameDay Morning is the most comprehensive pregame show on Sunday morning, airing at 9:00 AM ET for four hours on NFL Network and taking viewers straight up to kickoff. Host Rich Eisen joins analysts Steve Mariucci, Marshall Faulk, Kurt Warner, Warren Sapp and Michael Irvin to bring fans the latest news, injury reports, pregame analysis and game previews. Additionally, NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport provides the latest inside information from around the league. This week, NFL Network analyst Nate Burleson appeared in-studio.
– “I truly believe he does give them the best chance to win. You look at Robert Griffin III – he hasn’t been making very many plays at all. You look at Kirk Cousins – he makes a lot of plays for them but he also makes more mistakes than the other guys. So the best combination of the two is Colt McCoy…I just believe the best quarterback all around for this football team is Colt McCoy.” – Kurt Warner on if Colt McCoy gives the Washington Redskins the best chance to win
– “We talk about confidence, we talk about believing what you’re seeing and understanding what you’re seeing – he’s not doing that right now. Will he ever be able to do that? I think what we saw his first year in Washington was a lot based off of what he could do running, the play action. He wasn’t reading the entire field. I believe if he’s going to live up to the hype, he has to learn to read the entire field.” – Kurt Warner on Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III
– “When you look at what they gave up versus the production, as the number two pick what you’re supposed to look like and the leash you’re supposed to give the number two pick to learn and get better, I’m saying yes consider him a bust where he is.” – Marshall Faulk on Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III
– “The one thing every quarterback needs in the National Football League is a play-caller, a coach and a team that’s behind him to say, ‘This is our guy, we’ll run through the fire with him, we’ll go anywhere with him.’ I don’t see this football team rallying around him.” – Warren Sapp on Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III
– “He needs to start someplace else and get a fresh start like Alex Smith did, and all of a sudden it’s a win-win situation.” – Steve Mariucci on Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III
– “They’re going to make the playoffs. But what that game told me was when you want to simulate a playoff game it looks like a rivalry game. The way the Cowboys showed up in a rivalry game against the Eagles, that lets me know that they’re not ready for the playoffs.” – Marshall Faulk on the Dallas Cowboys’ loss to the Philadelphia Eagles
– “[Rob Gronkowski] and [Julian] Edelman, that combination with what they have outside in [Brandon] LaFell I’ll take over anything right now.” – Michael Irvin on the New England Patriots
– “He’s one of those few guys in this league that will make those big plays. When you need one, he makes it. I believe that means he’s worth $120 million.” – Kurt Warner on Baltimore Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco
– “Let me see you raise up Torrey Smith’s game. Don’t make me go get another Smith – let me see you raise up guys’ game and show me you’re worth $120 million because when I say I’m giving you $120 million, I’m taking it from other people to give to you.” – Michael Irvin on Baltimore Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco
– “The perception of Josh Gordon is that realistically he’s a dumb athlete. I think people think that because he made so many mistakes. But spending time with him as a teammate, I realized he’s very intelligent, he’s articulate.” – Nate Burleson on Cleveland Browns wide receiver Josh Gordon
NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport
On where quarterback Robert Griffin III be playing next season:
“At this point, the Redskins have not given up on RGIII for the future for two specific reasons. First of all, they don’t have to. They’ve already paid his salary for next season; that was guaranteed when he signed his four-year contract after he was the number two overall pick. He’s due $3.7 million and $6 million against the salary cap but the Redskins have already paid it so there is no financial incentive to move on. Plus, he is not going to force his way out of Washington. He is not going to be a pain in the locker room so there is every reason for the Washington Redskins to go ahead and try to see could he possibly be their quarterback of the future? But what we know now is it’s going to be Colt McCoy today. I talked to some Redskins coaches, they said Colt McCoy had a great week of practice; he looked poised, he looked more confident now that he’s going to get the start and his accuracy was particularly good.”
On Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III:
“I’m told by Redskins sources they have not given up on RGIII. In fact, there is a possibility he could return to the lineup this year if Colt McCoy does falter. The Redskins coaches I talked to really do agree that RGIII needs a little bit of a mental reset. They think he does have the skills to be a starting quarterback; maybe not the running ability that he had earlier in his career just because of the injuries but he certainly does have enough talent to be a starter. They think he needs to stand on the sidelines and watch and try to reset his brain and start making some of the football decisions that he did earlier in his career. One of the reasons they are not giving up on him is they don’t have to. They’ve already guaranteed his salary for next year; that happened when he signed his four-year contract. He’s not going to be a distraction in the locker room, he’s not going to force his way out so there really is no reason not to bring him back at least next year just to see if he can possibly be this franchise quarterback they thought he was.”
On Seattle Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch’s future:
“We’ve talked so much this year about how the Seahawks may move on from superstar running back Marshawn Lynch. What I am told by sources is that Lynch himself may move on. He may leave people wanting more as he often does, potentially walking away from the NFL after the season at 28 years old. Lynch could leave on his own terms; sources tell me he is mulling retirement and has been for some time. This is the same exact thing that happened last year during the season; I’m told by sources Lynch told two teammates that if the Seahawks win the Super Bowl he may walk away. Of course they did win the Super Bowl. He didn’t walk away but he also could do the same exact thing this year. But there is one caveat. Marshawn Lynch has a very strong relationship with Seahawks offensive line coach Tom Cable. If he does get a head coaching job, which is certainly a possibility, Lynch may actually just follow him there.”
On if there could be a change made to the format of the playoffs:
“I talked to a couple of league sources this week just about whether the Competition Committee could potentially change the playoffs and essentially decide and rule that a division winner might not get the opportunity to host a playoff game if their record isn’t good enough. Essentially, could the playoffs be re-seeded? What I was told was they actually considered this in 2008. It was voted down very strongly. The view of the Competition Committee at this point is that if you win your division, you deserve a home game. I’m told this is something they are expected to discuss this coming March for the owners meetings, especially if a six or seven-win team does make the playoffs and does get to host a playoff game. But no one I talked to believes that this will change. What they do believe though of course is that the playoffs will be expanded so at least that will answer some questions going forward.”
On the future for Ray Rice:
“I am told a handful of teams have already expressed interest in Ray Rice potentially playing this year. However, the belief is that it will not materialize making it unlikely that Ray Rice sees the field in 2014. However, he is in football shape. He is ready if someone does call. I had one general manager tell me regardless of how good he is, regardless of how much he has left, they would not take him. I had another general manager of team that is not so good say if we were better we would certainly consider Ray Rice. Only time will tell where the almost 30-year old running back does land. One thing I wanted to mention: one loose end from this whole situation is the Mueller investigation looking at the NFL’s handling of the Ray Rice situation. I’m told by a league source that most, if not all, of the interviews have been concluded. Now the next step is to gather materials, then come up with a ruling.”
On the latest regarding Adrian Peterson:
“Adrian Peterson will be present on Tuesday and I’m told he has handed over tons of materials over to third party arbitrator Harold Henderson for his review. Remember, he didn’t really participate in any of the other processes that happened last week or the previous week, so he is participating in this one. Now, the Ray Rice situation Adrian Peterson believes will positively affect him because as Judge Barbara Jones said in the Ray Rice ruling, Roger Goodell told Barbara Jones that the personal conduct policy will be forward-thinking. In other words, it won’t be retroactive. Adrian Peterson’s best argument is that when he had his infraction with his son, the NFL’s new personal conduct policy did not exist. So the Ray Rice situation does seem to help Adrian Peterson’s situation. Jeff Pash, the league’s head lawyer, said in a memo to owners and team presidents on Friday that the Ray Rice situation will have no effect on pending discipline. I guess we’ll see going forward.”
On New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees:
“I am told the Saints are preparing for life after Drew Brees. In fact, they believe they can see the finish line here. My expectation from talking to several sources involved in the situation is that the Saints will draft a quarterback high this year. In fact, they wished they had done this in previous years, mainly because Drew Brees is 35 years old, he’s not as big as say Tom Brady or Peyton Manning, and they’ve seen some arm strength issues that have cropped up in the last several games; throwing crucial interceptions – the kind which we never see from Drew Brees. They are starting to wonder what is next at this position.”
