NOLAN RYAN ON THE PITCH COUNTS:
“Everybody has whatever their genetic potential is to throw a certain number of pitches and then they’ll start losing their stuff. It’s us as an organization to realize what is that point and we need to have a trained eye and we need to know our pitchers so that when we start seeing them get to that point, we have someone ready to come in. …We just don’t throw a number out there like a 100 like a lot of people in baseball think that’s the magic number.” View the complete interview here.
MATT CAIN ON BUSTER POSEY:
“Buster [Posey] has done a great job back there. He has made everything comfortable. He’s been throwing a lot of the good fingers down and the defense has been huge. They’ve been taking care of me, running down balls and picking balls in the infield.” View the complete interview here.
JAVIER LOPEZ ON PLAYING IN THE WORLD SERIES:
“Starting the year in Pittsburgh, I want to thank [Pittsburgh Pirates General Manager] Neal Huntington to give me a shot to get back into Major League Baseball and re-establish myself. If you told me in May or June that I’d be a San Francisco Giant and be in the World Series, I’d tell you’re lying to me right to my face. It’s been a great time, really enjoying it and this is the perfect clubhouse for it. Everybody has been loose, not only in the Postseason, but trying to run down those Padres in September. We’ve really been cohesive and calm, having a great time and really just enjoying playing the game.”
KEVIN MILLAR ON MATT CAIN:
“Matt Cain throws a heavy ball. The ball gets on guys. That 91 to 93mph fastball plays 95 to 97. He’s a big guy. [Tim] Lincecum is a small guy and this is a big presence on the mound. He has that extra giddy up on his fastball and he did a nice job pitching to contact.”
BILL RIPKEN ON MATT CAIN:
“He establishes his fastball. It’s smooth heat. He’s a big guy with really good leverage. That 92mph fastball seems to change gears halfway to home plate.”
KEVIN MILLAR ON EDGAR RENTERIA:
“[Edgar] Renteria is a winner. He’s a tremendous base runner and fielder. He doesn’t make baseball mistakes on the field. And I’ll tell you right now, he’s a clutch hitter. He gives you a tough at-bat. He has an inside–out type swing. …When I was teammates with him in Florida, that was more of his surroundings. He’s a mellow kid, just a nice person. When he came to Boston in 05’, it was a little bit tough. He couldn’t get his feet wet. …It just wasn’t his surroundings. This guy right here knows how to win baseball games. He makes everyone around him better and he’s very smart.”
KEVIN MILLAR ON C.J. WILSON’S BLISTER:
“Derek Lowe [Boston Red Sox teammate from 2003-2005] had the same problem as a sinker ball pitcher. The blister develops on their throwing finger. When you hold a baseball with two fingers on the two-seam part, you will get all the pressure on the middle finger. It develops where it breaks open, and then boom, blood comes. It’s very painful. You heard [C.J. Wilson] say that he couldn’t throw a fastball for a strike so he had to come out of the game.”
BILL RIPKEN ON PABLO SANDOVAL:
“The Panda needs to get some at-bats back in Texas. [Colby] Lewis and [Tommy] Hunter are slated for Games Three and Four. It’s not like they’re going to trick you and do some things to throw him out of the zone. They might challenge you and that might be a pretty favorable matchup for the Panda to see some good overhand fastballs where he might be able to run into one.”
