GLAZER’S SUNDAY SCOOP
FOX NFL Insider Jay Glazer says the Broncos will shift the offense to primarily use shotgun for Peyton Manning: “The plan this week is for Peyton to primarily be in shotgun and then actually have the running back behind him kind of like the pistol, because not only do they need to get Peyton going, they need to get the running game going. It opens up the field and the Broncos vision for Peyton Manning. “
Glazer says the Steelers proclaim Le’Veon Bell is their guy: “Le’Veon Bell is the starter over DeAngelo Williams. Mike Tomlin told me this morning that he’s our guy and we’re going to run him as much as we can. We know that we have to monitor his conditioning, but don’t be surprised if they actually use both those guys on the field at the same time.”
Glazer on Drew Brees’ injury: “Drew Brees does not have a torn rotator cuff, he does not think he’s going to be out for weeks and weeks. Basically the inflammation is clamping down on the nerve and it’s not a pain issue, but it’s causing a lack of strength. Once they can get that swelling to go down, he thinks that he’ll be able to return.”
Howie Long says the Giants still haven’t solved their issues: “They haven’t fixed their problems and I don’t think they will until they get some people back. The good news is they probably should’ve beaten Dallas, they beat Washington, Dallas is now beat-up and Philadelphia is on life support. For the Giants, to me its about finishing games, finishing drives in the red zone, limiting the dropped balls, and finding a way to generate a pass rush that doesn’t include Steve Spagnuolo dialing up yet another blitz. It could be a simple as getting two players back, Victor Cruz and Jason Pierre-Paul.”
Terry Bradshaw on the state of the Saints: “I’ve never been to a high school reunion and one reason I didn’t go was because I was afraid I wouldn’t recognize anybody. And when I thought about the Saints, I don’t really recognize these people. I don’t know who they are, I don’t know who they are on defense anymore. They have no identity. On offense, they are a beat-up bunch and now their quarterback is down and they do have to run the football today. To me, Sean Payton always felt like a ten-year career, move on, you were a great coach.”
Jimmy Johnson picks the Arizona Cardinals to win the NFC West: “Today I would pick Arizona to win that division, but they have to keep Carson Palmer healthy and they have to overcome what I think is the most brutal schedule in the entire league.”
Howie Long on the state of the Philadelphia Eagles: “What it comes down to is this: You can’t run the football in this offense, there are no explosive plays, you can’t protect the football, you can’t run the offense and you’re putting way too much pressure on your defense. The defense has been on the field more than any other team in football within the first few weeks, that has to change.”
Jimmy Johnson asks Troy Aikman how it felt when Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said Brandon Weeden throws the prettiest ball he’s every seen: “That didn’t make me feel too good. Playing quarterback in this league goes beyond just throwing a nice pass. Brandon Weeden has got to make good decisions under duress, and how well he does that today is going to determine how much success he ultimately has. I think Jerry was taking a shot at me but you’re accustomed to those shots, Jimmy.”
FOX NFL KICKOFF
Howie Long on the Seahawks and Kam Chancellor returning to the team: “In a team and a locker room full of really good players, strong-minded players, when Kam Chancellor talks, people listen. Then you go to the on the field aspect of it, Kam Chancellor as an intimidator in the box, every wide receiver and every running back knows where Kam Chancellor is on the football field. And finally, his ability to cover the matchup that’s bothering everyone around the league, the tight end position.”
Dave Wannstedt weighs in on Kam Chancellor: “In the locker room there’s no question of his impact, but the way I look at the Seahawks right now, unless Kam Chancellor can play offensive line he’s not going to help them much on the field.”
Randy Moss says Jimmy Graham does not fit with the Seahawks: “Jimmy Graham does not fit the team in Seattle. When they brought Jimmy Graham in, Michael Bennett, the defensive lineman, made a comment and said that Jimmy Graham was soft because he knew what type of guy they needed in their offense. Jimmy Graham is a receiver. I love the things that he was able to do in New Orleans, but Seattle is not New Orleans. It’s a different type of team, different offense.”
Moss says you have to stay with Johnny Manziel at Cleveland: “You stay with the hot hand. It would be the same if it was flipped around and Johnny Manziel was coming off a concussion and Josh McCown was putting up big numbers. You have to look at what Johnny Manziel has been able to do over the last two weeks. The Browns drafted him for a reason, McCown is there to hold the fort down until the man gets ready to take over. The production of Johnny Manziel and what they’re looking for in Cleveland, I think it’s heading in the right direction.”
