GLAZER’S SUNDAY SCOOP
Jay Glazer reports on the latest in San Francisco with the lackluster play of quarterback Colin Kaepernick: “Even though they had a huge contract extension for him, they could actually move on from him after the year provided he’s not injured. There are guarantees against injury. But still that’s not the team’s mindset. They look at him and say, ‘this is the same guy who took us to the Super Bowl a couple years ago. It’s the same guy who lit it up just two weeks ago.’ His confidence is completely shot. The other problem is that usually when your quarterback is struggling confidence-wise, the entire locker room picks him up – that’s not his relationship there. It’s not like they don’t like him but he’s just alone, on an island inside that locker room. There is not a lot of people that he connects with to try to pick him back up. Right now the coaching staff is just trying to figure out how to bring out that old Colin Kaepernick because confidence-wise, he’s just buried right now.”
Glazer reported that the meeting between the NY Giants and defensive end Jason Pierre Paul never happened: “He was supposed to show up Tuesday – didn’t. Wednesday – didn’t. Thursday – didn’t. Friday – didn’t. They expect him to come in this week. Here’s the one thing that people don’t know. Because he’s still an unsigned free agent, they only get two medical re-checks. He’s already had one. So the next time up, if he doesn’t pass it and they want to sign him again, they’re going to have to do it sight unseen.”
Glazer reported on the police being called to the Chicago Bears facility earlier this week after Jeremiah Ratliff was released by the team: “Jeremiah actually got into it with the team’s training staff. He got very emotional about it and he said some things, basically, that you can’t take back. He made some threats and might have been said out of emotion at the time, but the Bears didn’t take that too lightly. Last year, Ratliff also had an issue where they had to pull him off the practice field. [Former Bears Head Coach] Marc Trestman though instead of putting him out, made him team captain. That’s not what [general manager] Ryan Pace and [head coach] John Fox did. They said, some of the things he said, he just can’t take back and we’ve got to move on.”
Terry Bradshaw says getting rid of Jim Harbaugh as head coach of the San Francisco 49ers has had an effect on Colin Kaepernick’s season: “They got rid of Jim Harbaugh and that’s what’s wrong with Colin Kaepernick. He was the one that brought him in and made him the quarterback he is.”
Jimmy Johnson reacts to the Indianapolis Head Coach Chuck Pagano and his team’s fake punt attempt last week that fell flat: “I had rules when it came to fake punts and I’m surprised Chuck Pagano didn’t remember them because he did work for me. Number one: don’t involve the kickers. They have a tough time with the physical play and making quick decisions so don’t involve the kickers in any crucial role. Second thing: you practice against all situations and then, if anything is different from what you practiced, you call it off and you kick the football.”
Johnson puts blame for the Redskins 2-4 start and unsatisfactory quarterback play on the team owner and the former head coach: “I blame this on Dan Snyder and [former head coach] Mike Shanahan who gave up a boatload of draft picks for an injury prone quarterback that either doesn’t have the talent or he doesn’t fit – RGIII.”
Bradshaw has changed his opinion of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and their quarterback Jameis Winston: “I was very critical of Tampa Bay when they drafted Jameis Winston, primarily on the character-issue and especially at the quarterback position, which is a leadership position. Now, I like what they’re doing with him. I like his attitude.”
Bradshaw is confident that Cowboys quarterback Matt Cassel is the right fit for Dallas while Tony Romo recovers: “No one is like Tony Romo. Cassel fits them perfectly because he will put the football down the field and that’s what Dallas needs.”
Howie Long sums up issues with the New York Giants offense: “It’s an abbreviated offense. They lack explosive plays and have a lot of dropped balls.”
FOX NFL KICKOFF
Dave Wannstedt on whether this Dallas Cowboys defense can carry the team while key players on the offensive side of the ball get healthy: “I don’t believe [the defense] can. To have a defense carry your football team, they have to be advantageous from the standpoint of creating turnovers, setting the offense up for easy scores and the Cowboys haven’t had a turnover in the last three games.”
Champ Bailey says Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton isn’t getting the respect that he deserves from the media: “He has always overachieved. This isn’t something new. One thing we have to start doing is giving some respect to the dual-threat quarterback. He’s the only quarterback where they call quarterback run plays. He’s my MVP.”
Colin Cowherd and Wannstedt commented on the Indianapolis Colts head coach Chuck Pagano following last week’s trick play that did not work.
Wannstedt: “I’m focusing on the special teams coach. I’m firing him. I’m making a change there. When you think about what happens here, every coach has special plays – offense, defense and special teams. We have down and distance, we have field position, we have situation to game and it should work. That was in Chuck’s mind, and ultimately he’s responsible, but it’s like having an offensive play.”
Cowherd: “You have to get past Bill Belichick in the AFC to get to the Super Bowl. Do you think Chuck Pagano will ever go into games against Belichick and be the better coach? That play will never go away. It makes him look second rate.”
