Notes from TNT’s Coverage of the 94th PGA Championship from
The Ocean Course, Kiawah Island, S.C.
Second Round – Friday, August 10, 2012
TNT’s Exclusive Third Round Coverage of the PGA Championship Continues Saturday, Aug. 11, 11 a.m.-2 p.m. ET.
TNT commentators: Ernie Johnson, Ian Baker-Finch, Bill Kratzert and Vince Cellini
Baker-Finch on the course conditions on Friday: “The wind has really made a difference…the strategy changes and the players have to avoid disaster. There are doubles and triples [bogeys] on a course like this on every hole.”
Kratzert on playing in the windy course conditions today vs. yesterday: “If you played in the morning yesterday, you pretty much had a hall pass.”
Vince Cellini interviewed Adam Scott (-1) following his second round:
Scott on the course conditions today: “It’s pretty severe out there today. The wind’s really gusting and in a consistent direction…this course plays very difficult because, to hit some of the greens, you have to hit the ball up in the air and can’t play the low shot.”
TNT’s Vince Cellini interviewed Vijay Singh (-4) following his second round:
Singh on playing in the conditions today: “Going out was okay. You try to make a few birdies if you can keep your score under par, but from holes five to 13 – that nine-hole stretch – you just survive. You try to hit the fairway and the green and manage your score.”
TNT’s Vince Cellini interviewed Phil Mickelson (E) following his second round:
Mickelson on the course conditions today: “It’s a difficult test because you have direct cross winds on many of the holes and you are not able to play the ball on the ground. You have to go through the air and you have to fight and take on the cross winds.”
Mickelson on the design of the course: “I think the course is set up so well that there is enough room to play, even in these conditions. It’s very well done. It’s a great golf course, great set up and a very fair, fun test.”
Baker-Finch on Keegan Bradley defending his PGA Championship title: “No one has repeated or defended the title since Tiger in 2006 and 2007. Keegan Bradley came in here in great form. I thought he might play well on this style of golf course and his confidence is high.”
Baker-Finch on Woods’ five putts in four holes: “Tiger Woods – now that’s the Tiger of old.”
PGA club pro Matt Dobyns during TNT’s “Chasing the Trophy” feature: “My first Major…the experience is priceless.”
Baker-Finch on Gary Woodland, who had been near the top of the leaderboard for parts of two days: “He’s as long [a hitter] as anyone out there.”
Baker-Finch on the unique design of The Ocean Course: “[There are] lots of angles and intimidating looks to this golf course. Pete Dye [course designer] did a great job with it. [There are] lots of different tees at all the holes so that you can vary the distance from day-to-day. The wind can really change. A 20 mph wind from the other direction tomorrow makes a totally different course.”
Baker-Finch on the difficulty of play today on The Ocean Course: “It’s at least four shots harder today. It was really a brutal day today.”
Kratzert on Tiger Woods’ play through four of the more difficult holes on The Ocean Course today: “Watching those four holes – 10, 11, 12 and 13 – that’s four as good a holes as I’ve seen him play in quite some time.”
TNT’s Vince Cellini interviewed Rory McIlroy (-2) following his second round:
McIlroy on the playing conditions this afternoon: “It was tough. I haven’t hit a lot of balls in that wind all week. It was very hard getting the ball on the fairway and then onto the green.”
TNT’s Vince Cellini interviewed one of three 36-hole leaders – Tiger Woods (-4) – following his second round:
Woods on the condition of play today: “It was hard staying steady [while putting]. It was tough. It was fun but it was tough. There was no such thing as an easy tap-in.”
TNT’s Vince Cellini interviewed another 36-hole leader – Carl Pettersson (-4) – following his second round:
Pettersson on his level of play today: “You had to hit the ball precise all day. My short game was superb and that’s what kept me in there [today].”
