BILL COWHER AND BOOMER ESIASON FOR WEEK 4 ON OCTOBER 3
RATINGS RISE FOR “NFL TODAY”
► CBS Sports’ THE NFL TODAY, is the highest-rated Sunday afternoon pre-game show through the first three weeks of the NFL season earning an average national household rating/share of 3.3/8, up 32% from last year’s 2.5/6.
(On whether Philip Rivers, Kyle Orton or Peyton Manning can break Dan Marino’s record of 5,084 passing yard in a season set in 1984?)
DAN MARINO: You know what? I hope not. They’re averaging 42 throws between these guys in attempts a game. When I broke that record, not to say that they can’t do it, we only averaged 29 passes. So they’re throwing the ball a lot more, and eventually this is going to happen.
BOOMER ESIASON: 1984 is the season by which all quarterbacks should be measured. It was a different league, a different type of defense. Now the defense is basically got one hand tied behind their back. Wide receivers can get off the field. And they should be throwing for 4,500-to-5,000 yards. Five-Thousand yards in one season and 48 touchdown passes is the greatest single season.
(Denver quarterback Kyle Orton has the second most passing yards in the league, but do you consider him a Top 10 quarterback?)
BILL COWHER: No way. He may be in the Top 15 but nowhere in the Top 10. Look at his record, that’s the bottom line. He hasn’t been to a playoff game. He can manage a game. He just can’t take one over.
(On whether San Diego gave up LaDainian Tomlinson too quickly)
MARINO: Yeah, the Jets got a great deal. He’s a future Hall of Famer. I think they need to keep him fresh. Give him 12-to-15 touches a game. He’ll last all year and be a great addition.
(On New York Giants and Head Coach Tom Coughlin)
BOOMER: This whole thing with Tom Coughlin around here (New York), he’s on thin ice and all that stuff, to me it’s all about the media. It’s all about writing stories. I think we all have great respect for him. He’s a great coach. He’s turned this team around before and took them all the way to the Super Bowl. This team right now is better than that team was at this point in the season. They’ll be fine. I think they’re going to have a great game tonight against the Chicago Bears.
► BOOMER ESIASON SITS DOWN WITH JETS’ “SANCHIZE” QB MARK SANCHEZ
(On playing with LaDainian Tomlinson)
SANCHEZ: I’m getting in trouble in the quarterback room because I’m not carrying out my fakes. Because as soon as I hand it to him, I just stare at him and watch him, because he can break one. He’s an amazing security blanket. He’s always in the right spot. He’s a great weapon.
(On dealing with Braylon Edwards and his problems)
SANCHEZ: The first thing I did when I saw him, I gave him a big hug and said, ‘Hey, man, we’re here. Forget everything else. Check that at the door. Don’t bring that in here.’
(Braylon Edwards on Mark Sanchez)
EDWARDS: Mark helped me. He was a friend first then he was a teammate. And in that regard, he was able to help me shut out all the distractions and all the things I was dealing with. It just showed the support and the trust that this team, and this organization, has in me.
(On Sanchez’s demeanor in the huddle now compared to last year)
DUSTIN KELLER: When he comes in, not only does he make the play call, he points to the guy and makes sure he focuses on him and they get every little detail.
(Rex Ryan on Mark Sanchez)
RYAN: Our guys see him now as a leader. And I think he earned that right. He has all the physical skills.
