PHIL SIMMS
(On Kansas City): First off, let’s just get this straight, Kansas City’s defense is real in every aspect. Look at how Dontari Poe is playing this year. You take him and Mike DeVito – those are two names that people don’t talk about. They might be the reason why this defense has changed around so much because they give it some oomph. I am super impressed with everything about their defense. On the offensive side, it’s everything as advertised. It is definitely a work in progress. And with Alex Smith, you’ve got to be careful how you judge him. Protection and guys getting open both are issues.
(On Houston): It’s probably good Houston is playing away from home. Maybe not against a team like the Kansas City Chiefs, but when you go away from home it is a great bonding experience for the football team. It can bring you back together. And right now, that team needs that as much as anything.
DAN DIERDORF
(On New York Jets): The Jets realize how close they came to beating the Patriots playing with a rookie quarterback, who in the fourth quarter of that game looked like a rookie quarterback. So, I would think the confidence level amongst the Jets players is very high. They certainly think they can win this game. The question is can Geno Smith keep from turning the ball over? The Jets can’t beat the Patriots losing the turnover battle. It can’t be done.
(On Tom Brady and New England): Tom Brady is on a level that other quarterbacks can only dream of being. But this is a Patriots offense that at times really struggles. Now with Danny Amendola unsure of his status, and not knowing whether Rob Gronkowski is going to play, Brady is searching for the timing and consistency in their passing game that is just not there. For every spectacular play that one of these kids makes, there are a couple of drops along the way that go with it. We’re not used to seeing the Patriots struggle like this on offense. But the biggest concern for them moving forward is that they’ve lost their best defensive player in Jerod Mayo. He was out there on every play coordinating their defensive packages. A defense has three levels. They lost their best player on Level 1 in Vince Wilfork. Now they’ve lost their best guy in the second level in Mayo, and the best guy they have in the third level, Aqib Talib, is hurt. This is a Patriots team that is kind of limping into MetLife Stadium. I’m sure the Jets’ confidence is very high.
DAN FOUTS
(On Pittsburgh-Baltimore): Their records at this point don’t matter. It’s still early in the season and time for both of these teams to get their game right. It seems like both teams have real trouble running the ball and that’s so uncharacteristic of what we’ve seen out of them over the years. Whichever team can finally get the running game going will have success. But it is going to be extremely difficult because both teams’ defenses are so good against the run. That has always been the spirit of both these teams. And now they also have great quarterbacks that are capable of getting the job done. Their personalities as a team have been tough physical defense with tough physical running. So to me, that will be the key.
