The latest edition of The Rich Eisen Podcast is available for download on NFL.com and iTunes.
A week following the 2012 NFL Draft, Eisen enlists NFL Network’s draft expert Mike Mayock to recap the top selections, which picks left him scratching his head, and the team he believes will make the playoffs next season after failing to make it in 2011. Below are quotes from Mayock’s interview:
– “I loved Tampa Bay and I loved Minnesota because they manipulated the board, they got the guys they wanted and then they come back up and poached at the end of the first round.” – Mike Mayock on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Minnesota Vikings in the draft
– “I felt the big hole on the Dallas Cowboys – maybe even go back 10 or 12 years – has been the play at the safety position. I feel like they’d have played in a Super Bowl or two if they had a quality group of defensive backs back there…[Morris] Claiborne steps in day one and he’s expected to be a primetime player immediately.” – Mayock on the Dallas Cowboys’ selection of cornerback Morris Claiborne
– “I went on the record before the draft in saying I thought that the defensive end from Syracuse, Chandler Jones, who was number nine on my board – three years from now he might be the best defensive end in football…I love that pick and the [Dont’a] Hightower thing was a no-brainer. You want to talk about somebody who is right up Bill Belichick’s alley it’s this kid.” – Mayock on the New England Patriots selecting defensive end Chandler Jones and linebacker Dont’a Hightower in the first round
– “I hope the kid gets his life straightened out because three years ago he was one of the most highly-recruited kids in the country. I just wish he would get to work, shut his mouth and play.” – Mayock on undrafted linebacker Vontaze Burfict
– “LaMichael James in San Francisco, along with A.J. Jenkins, provides a completely different dimension.” – Mayock on the San Francisco 49ers
