“Yale’s chances to upset the Ivy League Champion Crimson got a big boost when QB Patrick Witt elected to forgo a Rhodes Scholarship interview in order to play in The Game.” – Ross Tucker
NEW YORK (November 17, 2011) –The NBC Sports Group will air four games across all the college football properties it covers – Notre Dame, Mountain West, Pac-12, and Ivy League — on NBC and VERSUS this Saturday.
VERSUS will kick off the day by airing ‘The Game,’ one of college football’s oldest rivalries between the Yale Bulldogs (5-4) and the Harvard Crimson (8-1) at 12 p.m. ET. Coverage will include an exclusive interview with Patrick Witt, Yale’s senior quarterback who will forgo an interview for a Rhodes Scholarship to play in his last football game for the Bulldogs.
PATRICK WITT ON HIS DECISION TO PLAY: “My focus this week is solely on preparing for the Game alongside my teammates and coaches. The important part here is not so much the game, but the principle of it…If I were to go to that interview and skip the game, in a lot of ways I’m not acting like the person they selected to interview.”
Immediately following ‘The Game,’ VERSUS will air a Mountain West showdown between the Colorado State Rams (3-6) and No. 19 TCU Horned Frogs (8-2) at 3:30 p.m. ET. NBC will air Notre Dame (7-3) vs. Boston College (3-7) game at 4 p.m. ET as the Fighting Irish look for its fourth consecutive win. It is NBC’s final Notre Dame game of the season. The quadruple-header will conclude with a Pac-12 match-up between the Colorado Buffaloes (2-9) and UCLA Bruins (5-5) on VERSUS at 7:30 p.m. ET.
VERSUS will surround its and NBC’s college football game coverage this weekend with pre- and post-game coverage as well as halftime reports from NBC’s Football Night in America studio (Studio 8G) at 30 Rockefeller Plaza. The coverage will be hosted by Liam McHugh with 1984 Heisman Trophy-winner Doug Flutie and Super Bowl champion and former NFL tight end Roland Williams serving as studio analysts. NBC will also present a halftime show featuring McHugh and Flutie providing scores and highlights.
COMMENTATORS: NBC will team commentators Tom Hammond (play-by-play) with Mike Mayock (analyst) and Alex Flanagan (sideline reporter) for Notre Dame coverage. Ted Robinson and Glenn Parker will lead VERSUS’ Pac-12 Conference coverage as play-by-play announcer and analyst, respectively. They will be joined by Akbar Gbaja-Biamila on the field as the sideline analyst. Paul Burmeister will helm VERSUS’ Mountain West Conference coverage and will be joined by Shaun King as analyst and Anthony Herron as sideline analyst. Randy Moss will serve as the play-by-play announcer for the Ivy League game and will be joined in the booth by Ross Tucker as lead analyst. Carolyn Manno will serve as in-game reporter. NBC and VERSUS will have an analyst reporting from the sidelines for all college football games to provide first-person analysis from the field and interact with the play-by-play and color announcers in the booth.
FLUTIE ON NOTRE DAME-BOSTON COLLEGE: “The meetings between Notre Dame and Boston College have created a really good rivalry. In recent years, Boston College has done well against the Irish, however, this year Boston College is outmatched with a team full of underclassmen. It will take a special effort from them and some turnovers by Notre Dame to allow them to stay in the game.”
WILLIAMS ON COLORADO STATE: “The good news for Colorado State is the team had a competitive battle last week against San Diego State, got a fantastic game from running back Chris Nwoke, and did pretty well against the Aztecs’ high-powered offense. But San Diego State is a far cry from a Horned Frog defense.”
PARKER ON COLORADO-UCLA: “The Buffaloes look to build on their recent big win against Arizona with a road trip victory at UCLA. The key is to get Rodney Stewart running the way he did against the Wildcats. On the flipside, UCLA is still fighting for the Pac-12 South title and needs an effort like they had at home against ASU to keep those hopes alive.”
TUCKER ON ‘THE GAME’: “The Harvard Crimson and their record-setting offense have already clinched the Ivy League title, but they can’t afford a letdown against a Yale squad looking to make their season by beating Harvard for the first time since 2006.”
NOTRE DAME EXTRA: All of NBC’s Notre Dame games will be streamed live on NBCSports.com. “Notre Dame Extra” features a simulcast of the broadcast feed in full HD quality plus one additional online-only bonus camera.
