Programming Alert: NFL GameDay Wild Card Specials Saturday & Sunday
“It was fun while it lasted, but it’s going to be over next week when the Steelers show up.”
— Steve Mariucci on the Denver Broncos, who face the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC Wild Card round
“They won six games in a row and [Tim Tebow] captured all of our hearts. But they’ve got a three-game losing streak right now and they’re not hitting right now on all cylinders by any stretch of the imagination.”
— Steve Mariucci on quarterback Tim Tebow and the Denver Broncos, who face the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC Wild Card round
“You can’t play this high-risk, high-reward defense without cornerbacks – that’s basically what Rob Ryan has been trying to do all year long and it just gets too tough. You’re putting guys out on islands and you’re saying you have to cover fast. These guys just aren’t getting it done.”
— Michael Irvin on the Dallas Cowboys defense
“It seems as though this team was not prepared mentally, physically. It’s almost like they didn’t know what they had on the line.”
— Deion Sanders on the Dallas Cowboys in the 31-14 loss to the New York Giants
“We’re not trying to be Green Bay; we’re trying to be the New York Giants. However we put the foot down, that’s what we’re going to do. Coach [Tom] Coughlin, we love him to death and we said we’re going to fight for him, we’re going to fight for his job and we’re going to let him retire on his own will.”
— Giants defensive back Antrel Rolle on New York entering the playoffs on a two-game winning streak like the Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers last season
“You have two capable receivers, you have a capable tight end, two running backs that are very viable, two offensive linemen that are perennial Pro Bowlers and you cannot move the ball. So the problem lies with the coordinator or the quarterback, or both. Somebody needs to go.”
— Deion Sanders on the New York Jets
“Congratulations to L.T. A class act on the field as well as off.”
— Deion Sanders on Jets running back LaDainian Tomlinson, who moved into fifth on the all-time rushing list
“He let his emotions get the best of him. He has a ‘C’ on chest – that cannot happen.”
— Deion Sanders on Jets wide receiver Santonio Holmes yelling in the huddle and being pulled from the game
“How many times have you seen Ray Rice do this in a must-win game for the Ravens? Just takes the pressure off right from the beginning with a big run.”
— Rich Eisen on Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice’s 70-yard touchdown run on the fourth play of the game
“I hope the Bengal fans get on this bandwagon right here because they have a nice, young football team. And all of those draft choices from the Carson Palmer trade – they’re going to be a good team. They need to show up for every game.”
— Steve Mariucci on the Cincinnati Bengals fans
“The difference in this whole football team right now with the San Diego Chargers is Philip Rivers.”
— Michael Irvin on San Diego Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers, who threw for 310 yards and three touchdowns in the 38-26 victory over the Oakland Raiders
Jason La Canfora
On Norv Turner
Any decision is going to take 2-3 days. You have the A.J. Smith factor there as well. Maybe they decide to make a move in personnel. Philip Rivers, he loves Norv Turner. He’s the franchise and you risk losing your franchise quarterback if you get rid of Norv Turner, whether you bring in a Jeff Fisher or maybe it’s a [Rob] Chudzinski who has been on that staff before.
