Visits, and More in an Effort to Raise Funding and Awareness for Horizons For Homeless Children
BURLINGTON, MA, March 4, 2013 – Comcast SportsNet, NECN, and Horizons for Homeless Children today announced the first inaugural “Horizons for Homeless Children Week” – a weeklong fundraising effort beginning today, March 4th, and continuing through Sunday, March 10th. The initiative will include several on and off-air elements implemented by both networks in an effort to raise money to benefit Horizons for Homeless Children, a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of young homeless children by ensuring they are prepared for school success.
As part of the campaign, on-air talent from both CSN and NECN, along with Boston Celtics Guard Jason Terry and world-renowned chef Lydia Shire, have visited Horizons for Homeless Children’s Playspaces in Massachusetts. Additionally, the networks produced 16 public service announcements for Horizons featuring U.S. Gymnastics Olympic Gold Medalist Aly Raisman, U.S. Judo Olympic Gold Medalist Kayla Harrison, Celtics’ stars Paul Pierce, Jason Terry & Avery Bradley, and several Comcast SportsNet and NECN personalities. The PSA’s will be in heavy rotation on both networks throughout the week in addition to consistent on-air Horizons messaging, news stories, in-program integration and additional robust television coverage. Several corporations have also signed on as matching sponsors, including Walmart, Sovereign Santander, Comcast, and the Boston Celtics Shamrock Foundation. Several off-air tactics will be executed as well as part of this fundraising effort.
“This week is a fantastic opportunity to take our relationship with Horizons for Homeless Children to the next level and help make a real difference in the lives of so many children who are affected by homelessness,” said Bill Bridgen, General Manager and Executive Vice President of Comcast SportsNet New England and NECN. “The donations received today will significantly help young homeless children learn, play, and thrive and we plan to utilize all of our network assets to drive this message throughout the week.”
“We are thrilled about our partnership with Comcast SportsNet and NECN and the commitment they have made to help grow awareness about family homelessness and raise much needed funds for our organization,” said Asa Fanelli, President and CEO of Horizons for Homeless Children. “With one in every 45 children in the U.S. facing homelessness each year, this support and overall partnership will undoubtedly help the more than 3,000 young homeless children served by our organization each week so they can have a more successful tomorrow.”

About Horizons for Homeless Children
One in every 45 children in the United States is homeless each year, more than 1.6 million homeless American children. Homeless children experience chronic stress and trauma from the loss of relationships, multiple moves, or witnessing domestic violence. This stress and trauma can be emotionally and cognitively damaging to them and costly to communities. Quality early education can reduce the effects of stress and trauma and it is the most effective way to ensure future school success.
Horizons for Homeless Children is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of young homeless children and their families by ensuring that they are prepared for school success. Horizons provide high quality early education, opportunities for play, and family support services. Today, Horizons serves more than 3,000 young homeless children each week in Massachusetts through three comprehensive early education centers and 150 shelter-based Playspaces.
Horizon’s Playspaces are fully operated by volunteers. Training for volunteers in ongoing throughout the year and additional volunteers are always needed. To join the 1,500 volunteers who play with homeless children in family shelters, or for more information on Horizons for Homeless Children, please visit: www.horizonschildren.org
