ACCLAIMED DOCUMENTARIES, FEATURING A DIFFERENT FILM
EVERY WEDNESDAY FROM JUNE 20 TO JULY 25 ON HBO
NEW YORK, May 25, 2012 – Recognized as sports television’s best storyteller, HBO Sports presents six of its pioneering documentaries on consecutive Wednesday evenings this summer on HBO. The festival of acclaimed films, which feature HBO Sports’ trademark blend of archival footage, home movies, revealing interviews and unique storytelling, launches June 20 with HITLER’S PAWN and concludes July 25 with NAMATH.
HITLER’S PAWN (June 20, 7:00 p.m. ET/PT), presented on the eve of the 2012 London Olympic Games, examines one of the darkest, most controversial periods in Olympic history. This stirring film chronicles the hopes and heartaches of Margaret Lambert, a Jewish athlete training to compete for the German Olympic team at the 1935 Summer Games in Berlin.
RUNNIN’ REBELS OF UNLV (June 27, 7:00 p.m.) tells the story of the UNLV Runnin’ Rebels men’s basketball team and Jerry Tarkanian, their controversial coach. Featuring future NBA stars Larry Johnson, Greg Anthony and Stacey Augmon, the team captured the 1990 NCAA championship against the Duke Blue Devils and lost a heartbreaking rematch a year later.
JIM MCKAY: MY WORLD IN MY WORDS (July 4, 7:00 p.m.) explores the life of one of sports TV’s most important and respected broadcasters, whose career spanned six decades and made him the standard against whom other Olympic broadcasters are measured. The documentary includes compelling footage of some of McKay’s landmark broadcasts.
LOMBARDI (July 11, 7:00 p.m.) profiles Vince Lombardi, football’s greatest coach. Winner of the 2011 Sports Emmy® for Outstanding Documentary, the film explores his fascinating career and complicated life.
DEREK JETER 3K (July 18, 7:00 p.m.) chronicles the New York Yankees shortstop’s quest for his 3,000th hit. Produced with Major League Baseball Productions, it goes behind the scenes as the Cooperstown-bound Jeter approaches the milestone, which he reached with a homer on July 9, 2011.
NAMATH (July 25, 6:30 p.m.), co-produced with NFL FILMS, vividly captures the fascinating life and career of “Broadway Joe” Namath, one of pro football’s biggest stars.
Following its Wednesday night presentation on HBO, each documentary will also be seen the next day at 11:00 p.m. on HBO2.
