ESPN Events, a subsidiary of ESPN, announced today the promotion of Daryl Garvin to executive director of the Hawai’i Bowl, the postseason college football bowl game, and the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic, an eight-team men’s college basketball tournament, both held annually in December in Honolulu.
“We are pleased to have Daryl Garvin as executive director for the Hawai’i Bowl and the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic,” said Pete Derzis, senior vice president, ESPN Events. “His contributions through the past eight years have been invaluable, and I am certain that, with Daryl’s leadership, these premier collegiate events and their growth will continue to flourish.”
Garvin, who joined the Hawai’i Bowl in 2008 as director of operations, moves up from his most recent role as associate executive director, which he has held since 2009. He was also associate executive director of the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic since its inception that same year.
He also previously served as associate executive director of the Hawaiian Islands Invitational, the international soccer tournament that brought teams from around the Pacific Rim to Hawai‘i.
As a board member of The Hawai‘i Bowl Foundation, Garvin actively supports the organization’s mission to assist Hawai‘i-based 501(c)3s, especially nonprofits providing services to Hawaii’s youth.
Before joining ESPN, Garvin worked for Coldwell Banker Pacific Properties in Honolulu and served as vice president of Chesapeake Concerts, a Washington, DC-based entertainment organization for which he presented touring Broadway theatricals and concert events nationwide, ranging from “Cats” to “Beauty and the Beast” and from the Dave Matthews Band to the Backstreet Boys to Alan Jackson.
Previously, Garvin served four years in the United States Army (1978 to 1982), reaching the rank of Sergeant. After exiting the military, he began his professional career in Washington DC, where he managed the historic Warner Theatre. He later managed the Pier Six Concert Pavilion in Baltimore.
