FOX NFL SUNDAY NOTES – 10/21/12
Glazer Exclusive: Chargers Investigated For Using Banned Substance
Strahan on the Cowboys: It Starts at the Top. They Don’t Have Leadership
Johnson: Don’t Rule Out Eagles Having a Good Year
FOX NFL Sunday pregame show insider Jay Glazer reported that the San Diego Chargers are being investigated by the NFL for using ‘Stick ‘em.’ “The NFL is investigating the San Diego Chargers for use of a banned substance in their loss against the Denver Broncos on Monday night,” reported Jay Glazer. “During the game, one of their equipment managers came out onto the field with these little hand towels with this illegal substance in it. One of the officials, Jeff Bergman, actually saw it and tried to confiscate it. The equipment guy wouldn’t give it up. Finally they made the equipment guy empty his pockets and what they found in these hand towels was this illegal form of ‘stick em’ – a skin colored or clear colored ‘stick ‘em’ type of tape. This has been banned by the NFL for decades and decades. The NFL is investigating and the Chargers are facing potentially very stiff sanctions, a significant fine or even an outside shot of a loss of draft picks depending on how many people actually were involved in this, how many people knew about this and how high up it went in the organization.”

Earlier this week, the NFL announced that former NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue will replace Commissioner Roger Goodell as appeals officer in the New Orleans Saints “Bounty Gate” scandal. FOX NFL SUNDAY analyst Howie Long doesn’t feel that decision changes anything: “The players view Commissioner Goodell recusing himself from the process and turning the decision making over to former Commissioner Paul Tagliabue as nothing more than a lateral move. I have a great deal of respect for Paul Tagliabue and for Roger Goodell but I just find it hard to believe that a former commissioner is going to cut the legs out from under a sitting commissioner. If this thing were to end up on the court system, chances are there would be a discovery process. In the discovery process, the league would have to turn over what evidence they have and if in fact players were giving bounties to injure players, throw the book at them. If not, overturn the thing but at least at that point for the fans, for the players and for all of us, it would all be out there in the light of day.”

FOX NFL SUNDAY analyst Michael Strahan doesn’t think the Cowboys are tough or disciplined: “It starts with ownership. Jerry Jones can sell water to a well and we all understand that. He sold us on three things. The Dallas Cowboys are talented, that they’re tough and that they’re disciplined. I still think they are talented but I don’t think they’re necessarily that tough and we all don’t think they’re very disciplined. As it relates to toughness, you expect Tony Romo, DeMarcus Ware or Jason Witten just one guy to be the guy who’s like, ‘let’s go, get this thing together!’ They don’t have that leadership and it’s a shame.”

This past week, the Philadelphia Eagles fired defensive coordinator Juan Castillo. Co-host Terry Bradshaw and analyst Jimmy Johnson responded to what might be next in the future of the Philadelphia Eagles.
Co-host Terry Bradshaw: “Head coach Andy Reid will play out this year and no matter what at the end of the year he’ll leave. After 15 years, you run your course. I think he’s gone.”
Analyst Jimmy Johnson: “Let’s not rule out them having a really good year. They’ve got a good football team. Don’t rule that out!”

FOX NFL SUNDAY analyst Michael Strahan on the NFC North division: “Chicago is in first place right now but I don’t see them staying there. The Green Bay Packers will fight through injuries and come back to win this division. They are the toughest team in that division.”
——————————
FOX NFL SUNDAY analyst Jimmy Johnson on a report that Charlotte Panthers quarterback Cam Newton was playing video games, watching movies and riding go-karts during his bye week. Cam is in a sophomore slump ranked 25th or lower in just about every passing category this season: “This has no effect on how he plays but it does play a part in perception. Is he a struggling quarterback that wants to be perceived as one that’s not dedicated?”

Current Falcons Tight End Tony Gonzalez joined FOX NFL SUNDAY for an in-studio segment. Gonzalez talked about Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III. “Obviously he’s dynamic. He’s electrifying, he makes plays with his legs, with his arm but one thing that he needs to do and it happened when he played us is he needs to learn how to slide. He needs to learn how to get down when he’s in that open field running because you can get taken out of the game. Self-preservation is team preservation and that team goes as he goes.”
