Ø The New England Patriots defeat the Atlanta Falcons in Super Bowl 51. Down 28-3 in the third quarter, the Patriots mount a comeback – highlighted by Julian Edelman’s diving catch on the game-tying drive in the fourth quarter – to score 25 unanswered points and tie the game in regulation. On the opening drive of overtime the Pats score a touchdown to complete the largest comeback in Super Bowl history.
Ø The Golden State Warriors win their second NBA Finals in three years, defeating the Cleveland Cavaliers in five games in their third consecutive Finals matchup.
Ø The Houston Astros win their first World Series with a memorable seven-game victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Ø 50-0! Floyd Mayweather comes out of retirement to defeat UFC Featherweight and Lightweight Champion Conor McGregor by TKO, earning his 50th career boxing victory without a defeat.
Ø Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers defeat the Dallas Cowboys in the NFC Divisional Round 34-31 when Mason Crosby hits a 51-yard field goal as time expires after Rodgers connects with TE Jared Cook to put the Packers in field goal range.
Ø The Clemson Tigers earn the College Football Playoff’s top seed finishing the regular season 12-1 and winning the ACC Championship, one year after winning the National Championship.
Ø Sergio Garcia wins The Masters, his first Major Championship in his 74th start, when he defeats Justin Rose in a one-hole playoff at Augusta.
Ø Roger Federer wins Wimbledon and the Australian Open, his first two Grand Slam victories since 2012, extending his record of Grand Slam titles to 19.
Ø The Cleveland Indians win 22-straight games in August and September, the second-longest winning streak in MLB history.
Ø The Pittsburgh Penguins win their second consecutive Stanley Cup, defeating the Nashville Predators in six games.
Ø LaVar Ball dominates headlines as he creates hype for his three sons, Lonzo, LiAngelo and LaMelo and the Big Baller Brand.
Ø Kyrie Irving states he wants out of Cleveland and is traded from one Eastern Conference power to another when the Cleveland Cavaliers send him to the Boston Celtics.
Ø The Los Angeles Rams hire Sean McVay, the youngest head coach in the history of the NFL at the time of his hiring, who leads the franchise to their first winning season in ten years.
Ø The North Carolina Tar Heels win their sixth NCAA Tournament Championship by avenging a halftime deficit against Gonzaga in the National Championship game.
Ø Second year quarterback Carson Wentz leads the Philadelphia Eagles to an 11-2 start and becomes an MVP frontrunner before suffering a torn ACL in Week 14.
