Deadly Distraction
Outside the Lines (Sunday. 9 a.m. ET, ESPN2)
Gage Edwards, a popular, three-sport athlete at North Carolina’s East Surry High School, was texting while driving home to prepare for a basketball game. Dave Hawkinson, a father and grandfather, was cycling in North Dakota on a 100-mile training ride when he was hit by a texting driver. In an instant, their lives changed forever. Greg Garber shows how one bad decision – a deadly distraction – can lead to tragedy. Bob Ley hosts.
“I did always drill if ‘I call you, you better answer. If I text you, you better answer.’ Obviously I didn’t mean when he was driving. But that’s what parents do to their kids. You’re supposed to protect your babies, not put them in a situation that hurts them.” – Nikki Cline, Gage Edwards’ mother
“I remember getting a message, and looking down, and that probably was an instant, but it seemed like an eternity when it happened. It’s like time goes in slow motion.” — Justin Jalbert, on getting a message moments before striking and killing Dave Hawkinson
“We’ve all done it. I’ve done it. My dad did it. Almost everybody I know still does it. You don’t realize the consequences until something heart wrenching happens to you.” – Katie DeGier, Dave Hawkinson’s daughter, on texting while driving
