The first two recipients of ESPN the Fellowship are already on the job and contributing to ESPN’s workforce.
Announced last April as a recruiting initiative designed to be proactive in the hiring and retaining of diverse candidates, ESPN the Fellowship named Adrienne Lawrence and Treavor Scales as its first two recipients and both started their new assignments in August.
The program, for college graduates with less than five years of on-air experience, will provide individualized training within a common-core development plan of writing, interviewing, anchoring and production. The expectation of the inaugural Fellowship program was to fill two 24-month positions, each with six-month opportunities in Digital Media, Radio, International/Deportes and Studio Production. Ideally, the completion of each fellowship will result in placement into a full-time position.
“ESPN the Fellowship is designed to provide high potential talent with a unique opportunity to experience and work in all facets of media here,” said Meg Green, ESPN senior director, talent recruitment and negotiation.
“We will provide them with consistent feedback and written evaluations from all four platforms, with the opportunity to fast-track the program based on ability. Mentoring relationships will also be encouraged, as will involvement in ESPN’s Employee Resource Groups. ESPN is the only sports media company offering such an in-depth opportunity to the next generation of talent.”
Prior to joining ESPN, Lawrence was an attorney with Greenberg Traurig LLP where she represented companies and high-net worth individuals in federal and state court litigation involving business, contract and real estate disputes. Previously she was a Semifinals Reporter at Elite 11 (2015), a Litigation Attorney at McGuireWoods LLP (2011-12), an Adjunct Professor at Strayer University (2010-11) and at Litigation Attorney at Arent Fox LLP (2009-11).
Lawrence, a native of El Dorado Hills, Calif., has a Masters in Multimedia Sports Journalism from the University of Southern California, a law degree from George Washington University and a Masters in Criminal Justice from CUNY-John Jay College of Criminal Justice.
Previously a Crewing Coordinator at ESPN (July 2013-15), Scales was responsible for hiring technical crews for more than 30 college football games and 100 college basketball games a year, as well as other events. He was also responsible for recruitment, rate negotiation and discussion of payment terms of freelance technicians and vendors for remote productions. Prior to joining ESPN, the Stone Mountain, Ga., native was an intern at CBS Radio 98.5 and CSNNE in Boston (2012).
