Gus Johnson and US Soccer Legend Cobi Jones Call Four Matches, Including Mexico’s Rose Bowl Opener and Final
Extensive Pre- and Postgame Shows for All 25 Matches Include Live On-Site Coverage in Los Angeles, Salt Lake City, Baltimore and Chicago
Los Angeles – For the first time ever, FOX Sports Media Group televises all 25 matches of the CONCACAF Gold Cup, beginning with the doubleheader opener Sunday, July 7 on FOX Soccer, as Canada takes on Martinique live at 5:00 PM ET, followed by Mexico vs. Panama live at 7:30 PM ET. Gus Johnson calls the action from Mexico’s first match live from Pasadena’s Rose Bowl, with analysis from US Soccer Hall of Famer Cobi Jones. Rob Stone hosts on-site pregame, halftime and postgame coverage with analysts Eric Wynalda and Warren Barton.
In another first, FOX Sports broadcasts the USA vs. Cuba group stage match from Salt Lake City’s Rio Tinto Stadium on Saturday, July 13 at 3:00 PM ET, the quarterfinal round from M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore on Sunday, July 21 at 3:30 PM ET and the final at Chicago’s Soldier Field on Sunday, July 28 at 3:30 PM ET, live on FOX. Johnson and Jones are again paired for those three matches, working alongside FOX Soccer’s studio team.
Jones, US Soccer’s all-time leader in national team appearances, lends his voice to this region’s most prestigious biennial tournament, having played in five CONCACAF Gold Cups and winning in 2002. Jones is slated to call a total of ten matches, including both semifinals on July 24 on FOX Soccer alongside announcers John Strong and JP Dellacamera. Current FOX Soccer analysts Brian McBride and Wynalda bring their experience to this year’s tournament as former teammates of Jones from the 2000 US Gold Cup squad, with McBride to call several matches and Wynalda offering analysis from the studio.
FOX Soccer‘s Grant Wahl provides comprehensive news from inside the US national team camp as well as a feature with US midfielder Landon Donovan. Coverage also includes Johnson’s exclusive interview with coach Jurgen Klinsmann. FOX Deportes’ Francisco X. Rivera is entrenched within the Mexican national team camp for up-to-the-minute reports and additionally, FOX Deportes is set to broadcast pre and postgame coverage on “La Última Palabra” of the Mexican National Team in the Gold Cup. The 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup features the exciting talent and rivalries of the 12 participating nations from North America (Canada, Mexico, United States), Central America (Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Honduras, Panama) and the Caribbean (Cuba, Haiti, Martinique, Trinidad and Tobago). The United States looks to avenge its 4-2 loss in the 2011 Gold Cup Final against six-time Gold Cup Champion Mexico, which remains the most-watched telecast in FOX Soccer history with 1.1 million viewers.
