Tony Barnhart, Jeff Goodman, & Brett McMurphy join CBSSports.com, bringing over 70 years experience covering college athletics
FT. LAUDERDALE, FL – MAY 13, 2011: CBSSports.com today announced the hiring of three award-winning writers who will cover college basketball and college football for the site. Tony Barnhart and Brett McMurphy will cover college football and Jeff Goodman will report on college basketball for CBSSports.com. The trio brings a wealth of experience with over 70 years in the business of covering college athletics.
Barnhart, Goodman, and McMurphy join an award-winning staff of writers at CBSSports.com including college football Senior Writer Dennis Dodd and college basketball Senior Writer Gary Parrish. Recently, CBSSports.com’s National Columnist Gregg Doyel and NBA Senior Writer Ken Berger were the only two online writers recognized in the top five of the COLUMN WRITING category for the 2010 Associated Press Sports Editors (APSE) national sports journalism writing contest.
Known as “Mr. College Football,” Tony Barnhart joins CBSSports.com with nearly 35 years of covering college football on television, radio, newspaper and the Internet. Already a familiar face at CBS due to his work as a college football analyst for CBS Sports, Barnhart will now write exclusively for CBSSports.com. The 1999 Georgia Sports Writer of the Year, Barnhart spent 24 years covering college football for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and was the 2009 recipient of the Bert McGrane Award, which represents the Football Writers Association of America Hall of Fame.
Jeff Goodman joins CBSSports.com after six years as the senior college basketball writer at FOXSports.com, covering the sport on all levels – from recruiting to the NBA. Goodman, who will begin work for CBSSports.com in June of this year, is a Massachusetts native and has covered the Celtics, Red Sox, Patriots and Bruins for a variety of outlets over the years, including the USA Today, Washington Post, Associated Press and Boston Herald. Prior to his tenure at FOXSports.com, Goodman was a national recruiting analyst for Scout.com.
With over 20 years as a national college football and basketball writer, Brett McMurphy joins CBSSports.com after writing for AOL FanHouse and the Tampa Tribune. McMurphy, who will cover college football for CBSSports.com, was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize in the breaking news category for his work at Fanhouse and received seven best writing awards from the Football Writers Association of America between 2003 and 2010. The only reporter with more FWAA awards in that time frame was Dodd.
“Talented, well-respected writers with the ability to break news are the lifeblood of a sports Internet site and all three of these hires fit that description,” said Jason Kint, Senior Vice President and General Manager, CBSSports.com. “These additions are a clear signal to the industry and more importantly the fans that the staff of writers covering major college sports at CBSSports.com is now the strongest in the business.”
