AUBURN WOMEN AND VANDERBILT MEN WIN 2022 EAST LAKE CUP FINAL

October 27, 2022 By admin

Consolation Matches won by UCLA Women and Pepperdine Men

ATLANTA, (Oct. 26, 2022) – The Auburn women’s golf team and Vanderbilt men’s golf team claimed the eighth annual East Lake Cup Wednesday afternoon to close their fall seasons. The No. 3-seeded Tigers cruised to a 5-0 victory over No. 1 Texas A&M while third-seeded Vanderbilt edged out No. 1 Arizona State 3-2.

Auburn’s dominant afternoon began early with a 6&5 win from freshman Rachel Gourley over Texas A&M graduate student Hailee Cooper. A few minutes later, redshirt freshman Casey Weidenfeld—who sent the Tigers to the championship match on Tuesday—notched a 3&1 win over Aggie junior Zoe Slaughter. Auburn junior Elina Sinz clinched the championship match with a 3&2 triumph against Aggies senior Jennie Park, giving the Tigers their first East Lake Cup crown in program history. Auburn closed out the championship matches by sweeping Texas A7M, with a pair of 4-up wins. Junior Anna Foster defeated the women’s medalist Blanca Fernández García-Poggio while senior Megan Schofill bested sophomore Adela Cernousek.

“I think it helps a lot, just the confidence that we can do it against really good teams,” Auburn head coach Melissa Luellen said. “I mean, Oregon and Texas A&M are both excellent golf teams, and I guess we are, too. I just want to enjoy this, give them a little bit of break and just emphasize how we have to keep working because everyone else in the country’s working hard, too.”

In the men’s final, Vanderbilt outdueled Arizona State, and clinched the title in the penultimate match, which featured a triumphant comeback from senior William Moll.

Senior Matthew Riedel claimed an early point for the Commodores with a quick 7&6 win against Arizona State senior Ryggs Johnston. Vanderbilt 5th-year senior Reid Davenport won 2&1 over freshman Michael Mjaaseth for a second point, which cleared the way for Moll to clinch the East Lake Cup for his Commodores.

Moll was 4 down to Arizona State sophomore Josele Ballester after 10 holes, but battled back with a flurry of late birdies to tie the match and, ultimately, win it 1-up with a birdie on No. 18. Arizona State claimed its two points on wins from freshman Luke Potter, 1-up, over Vanderbilt junior Cole Sherwood and from Sun Devils sophomore Preston Summerhays, 3&1, against sophomore Gordon Sargent.

The win marked Vanderbilt’s second East Lake Cup title in program history, making the Commodores one of just two men’s programs, joining Illinois, with multiple wins at the East Lake Cup.

“I really am proud of them,” Vanderbilt head coach Scott Limbaugh said. “I think certainly the first day here didn’t go the way we wanted. You get out here and the kind of experience you gain on a day like today, it’s invaluable. Learning how to deal with different feelings. Somebody lost, somebody won, it comes down on your shoulders. You can’t replicate that at home, so super proud of them.”

To be able to end the way we did today just feels good to end the fall that way. We’ve been here for eight days now and a lot of golf, and a treat to be here at East Lake. TEXAS A&M, AUBURN (WOMEN), ARIZONA STATE, VANDERBILT (MEN) ADVANCE TO EAST LAKE CUP FINAL

October 26, 2022 By admin

All-SEC Matchup in the Women’s Final; Men’s Championship Features the No. 2 (Vanderbilt) and No. 4 (Arizona State) teams in Final 2021-2022 Golfstat Ranking

In the Consolation matchup, Oregon vs. UCLA among the Women, and for the Men, Texas faces Pepperdine

ATLANTA, (Oct. 25, 2022) – The women from Texas A&M and Auburn, along with the Arizona State and Vanderbilt men each won their semifinal match Tuesday to punch their ticket into Wednesday’s championship matches at the eighth annual East Lake Cup. The women’s final will showcase an all-SEC matchup, while the men’s features two NCAA Semifinalists from a season ago, with Vanderbilt finishing No. 2 and Arizona State No. 4 in the final 2021-2022 Golfstat ranking.

SEMIFINAL RESULTS:

  • WOMEN: (1) Texas A&M def. (4) UCLA, 3-2; (3) Auburn def. (2) Oregon 3-2.
  • MEN: (1) Arizona State def. (4) Pepperdine, 3-2; (3) Vanderbilt def. (2) Texas, 3-1-1.

WOMEN’S SEMIFINALS

The later semifinal was a dramatic match that went to extra holes to decide the clinching point. Auburn’s Casey Weidenfeld, a redshirt freshman, battled back against Oregon junior Hsin-Yu Lu to claim a 1-up victory in 19 holes and send the Tigers to the championship match. The Tigers and Ducks split the first two points of the day. Auburn senior Megan Schofill claimed a 6&5 win over senior Brittany Shin. Oregon then evened things with a 6&4 victory from senior Briana Chacon against freshman Rachel Gourley. Junior Ashleigh Park tallied the next Oregon point, with a 3&2 win over junior Elina Sinz. Auburn evened the match thanks to junior Anna Foster’s 4&2 win over senior Ching-Tzu Chen, which set the stage for Weidenfeld’s clinching point.

“We’ve got some young kids that joined our team this year, and I just let them know what our culture’s like,” Auburn head coach Melissa Luellen said. “We had some match play and saw some, well, maybe a little attitude that I wasn’t really pleased with. It was the opportunity to remind them about our culture—that I don’t care what you shoot, we always fight. You might be shooting 85 and you’re on the last hole and something clicks, and it can carry over to the next day or the next tournament. I said, ‘We never stop fighting,’ and just kind of made that really clear. I’m really proud of them.”

In the early semifinal, UCLA sophomore Caroline Canales earned the first point of the day with a 2&1 win over Texas A&M sophomore Adela Cernousek. The Aggies responded with back-to-back points, starting with a 4&2 victory from junior Zoe Slaughter over redshirt sophomore Alessia Nobilio. The Aggies then claimed the third point, as Monday’s Medalist, senior Blanca Fernández García-Poggio, won 5&4 over UCLA senior Annabel Wilson. Bruins sophomore Zoe Antoinette Campos evened things with a 3&2 victory over Texas A&M senior Jennie Park, leading to a deciding final match featuring UCLA senior Emilie Paltrinieri and Texas A&M’s Hailee Cooper. A graduate student, Cooper claimed the victory, 1-up, for the Aggies, with a chip-in eagle on the par-5 18th hole.

“I think we fought through a bad day,” Texas A&M head coach Gerrod Chadwell said. “I don’t think we had our best just in the matches that I was around. But we had some big wins early which was nice, but we’ll have another tough match tomorrow.”

MEN’S SEMIFINALS

Arizona State freshman Luke Potter picked up a point in the opening match with a 4&3 win over Pepperdine sophomore Ian Maspat. Last year’s East Lake Cup Co-Medalist Preston Summerhays, a sophomore for ASU, added a second points for the Sun Devils with a 1-up victory against grad student Sam Choi. The Waves rode back into the match with back-to-back points beginning with grad student Derek Hitchner’s 1-up win over senior Ryggs Johnston, followed by a 2&1 victory from senior William Mouw against freshman Michael Mjaaseth. In the anchor match, Sun Devils sophomore Josele Ballester punched ASU’s ticket to the championship match with a 3&2 win against Pepperdine grad student Luke Gifford.

“I think we could kind of put anybody against anybody and feel like they could beat them,” Arizona State head coach Matt Thurmond said. “We have five really, really good players. I think we’re a hard match-up, but so is Vanderbilt. They have five great players as well. (We’re) a competitive group; they’re really steady. I think that’s probably the biggest thing is they’re just kind of quietly steady and tough.”

The later semifinal featured a rematch of the NCAA National Semifinals when defending National Champion Texas ousted Vanderbilt. The Commodores claimed the rematch in emphatic fashion.

Texas freshman Christiaan Maas won the only point for the Longhorns with a 4&2 win over 5th-year Vanderbilt senior Reid Davenport. The first point for Vanderbilt came with a 5&4 victory by senior Matthew Riedel over Texas sophomore Alejandro Gonzalez. The Commodores proceeded to win the next two matches, with senior William Moll and junior Cole Sherwood both claiming 5&4 victories to propel Vanderbilt to Wednesday’s championship.

“We wanted to come out and just play better golf,” Vanderbilt head coach Scott Limbaugh said. “It’s match play, so the game changes a little bit, but we just weren’t very clean yesterday. So just wanted to have a little bit more ‘get up and go’ to what we’re trying to do.”

FERNÁNDEZ GARCÍA-POGGIO (TEXAS A&M), SARGENT (VANDERBILT) WIN INDIVIDUAL STROKE PLAY AT 2022 EAST LAKE CUP

October 25, 2022 By admin

Texas A&M (Women), Arizona State (Men) Claim No. 1 Seeds for Team Match Play Semifinals (Tuesday, 3-6 P.M. ET on GOLF Channel)

Women’s Semis: (1) Texas A&M vs. (4) UCLA; (2) Oregon vs. (3) Auburn  Men’s Semis: (1) Arizona State vs. (4) Pepperdine; (2) Texas vs. (3) Vanderbilt

ATLANTA, (Oct. 24, 2022) – Texas A&M’s Blanca Fernández García-Poggio fired a 2-under 70 to claim women’s medalist honors at the East Lake Cup. Vanderbilt’s Gordon Sargent, reigning NCAA Individual National Champion, earned the men’s individual crown with a 4-under 68.

Fernández García-Poggio was the first Aggie out and opened with two quick birdies in her first three holes. The highlight of Fernández García-Poggio’s round was a seven-hole stretch between Hole Nos. 8 and 14 which the senior played in a clean 5-under. Despite a tough finish, the Spaniard held on for her second-career individual victory and propelled Texas A&M to the No. 1 seed.

“It’s cool, the course is amazing and it’s so pretty,” Fernández García-Poggio said. “It’s just amazing.”

Sargent put together a bogey-free front nine with birdies on Hole Nos. 5, 6 and 7. After a bogey on the 11th hole, Sargent rebounded to birdie the 12th and 14th. He finished with a 4-under-par score of 68, the best of any player in the field.

“I didn’t drive it great, but I just kind of stayed in position all day,” Sargent said. “I hit my irons pretty solid and just did a good job of staying below the hole and giving myself good looks… I didn’t hit a great shot on (No.) 11, but other than that, played really solid.”

I AM A GOLFER FOUNDATION UNVEILS NATIONALLY TELEVISED “SOUTHWEST AIRLINES SHOWCASE AT CEDAR CREST”

October 21, 2022 By admin

Top Black Collegiate Men and Women to Compete in Televised Event on GOLF Channel at Historic Cedar Crest Golf Course with Goal of Positively Impacting Southern Dallas

DALLAS, Texas – Oct. 21, 2022 – The I AM a Golfer Foundation, a Dallas nonprofit focused on historic Cedar Crest Golf Course, with support from Dallas-based Southwest Airlines, announced today an addition to GOLF Channel’s 2023 lineup of live televised college golf tournaments: The Southwest Airlines Showcase at Cedar Crest. The event will be comprised of Black collegiate golfers, and include development opportunities for participants and area residents.

The top-21 male and 21 female Black collegiate golfers in the country will compete in 54-hole stroke play contests in their respective divisions. The inaugural three-day tournament will debut November 13, 2023, with a second event scheduled for 2024. GOLF Channel will televise all three rounds live and replay the tournaments in the evenings.

“We are delighted to announce this new event that provides opportunity for these talented collegiate golfers to showcase their talents on national television, exposure that is generally limited to players on a handful of Division 1 teams,” said Dave Ridley, Co-Founder and Chairman of the Foundation. “This event will highlight the history of Cedar Crest and the impact the Foundation is making on the lives of young people through our varied programs at the course and within the Dallas community.”

Chartered in 1919, Cedar Crest was designed by famed golf course architect A.W. Tillinghast. Among other significant national tournaments, Cedar Crest hosted the 1927 PGA Championship won by Walter Hagen and the 1954 UGA Negro National Open won by Charlie Sifford. Tillinghast, Hagen, and Sifford are members of the World Golf Hall of Fame.

“Cedar Crest Golf Course is a special place with a rich history,” said Ira Molayo, Co-Founder and Vice Chairman of IAMGF. “Our Foundation’s mission is to help this ‘hidden gem’ be a catalyst for community transformation in the Cedar Crest neighborhood and surrounding communities.”

Since inception in 2018, IAMGF has engaged more than 450 area youth in instructional programming, created and hosted 71 paid internship positions for area students, and awarded more than $95,000 in college and higher education scholarships.

“Showing up for people in the markets we serve – including our hometown of Dallas – is at the heart of who we are,” said Ryan Green, Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer at Southwest Airlines. “The contributions made by IAMGF align with our commitment to Dallas and support our mission to be a part of the surrounding communities.”

In addition to its youth programs, IAMGF founded the Dallas Amateur Championship in 2018 for DFW-area competitive golfers and as a fund-raiser for the Foundation. More than 600 participants compete annually.

“I could not be more proud and thankful to the leadership at the Foundation and Southwest Airlines for creating this event that will showcase our great city to a national audience,” said Mayor of Dallas Eric Johnson. “This unique collegiate, community and cause-related event will serve a purpose unlike any other in our city.”

A Saturday evening gala dinner with a keynote speaker and a Sunday morning 18-hole Collegiate-Amateur event will precede the three days of competition.

During the morning of each day’s competition, the schedule allows for conferences, seminars, and job fairs, not only for the participants in the event but also for area youth.

“I have long seen Cedar Crest Golf Course as an untapped economic engine for this community,” said Dallas City Councilmember for District 4, Carolyn King Arnold. “This new tournament, with its national reach, will add fuel to that engine and help attract a broad range of stakeholders who can help build on the momentum we have in the southern Dallas corridor to have a positive impact on our neighborhoods and residents.”

The Southwest Airlines Showcase at Cedar Crest will be the very first televised tournament exclusively featuring the top male and female Black collegiate players and showcased as part of GOLF Channel’s annual coverage of college golf throughout the fall and spring.

“We are excited to introduce this dynamic, historic event into our college golf portfolio beginning next fall and continue to raise the profile of student athletes throughout the year across our platforms,” said Tom Knapp, Executive Vice President, Partnerships & Programming, NBC Sports.

“We are looking forward to showcasing not only the achievements of the Black men and women on the course at historic Cedar Crest during this tournament, but also telling the stories of their important, long-standing impact in the local Dallas community together with the Foundation,” added Damon Phillips, Senior Vice President, Strategic Initiatives & Head of Diversity and Inclusion, NBC Sports.

The tournament will be the first-ever televised event at historic Cedar Crest Golf Course. GOLF Channel will provide live afternoon coverage of all three rounds with an encore presentation of each round totaling six telecasts and 18 total hours of programming.

“For Cedar Crest to host these talented collegiate players is a testament to Southwest Airlines’ investment in the communities that support them and to the city’s partnership with I Am a Golfer and Cedar Crest golf professionals. This golf gathering is creating economic development opportunities for southern Dallas that will ensure the course remains the “crown jewel” of this community and a favorite among golfers,” said Arun Agarwal, President, Dallas Park and Recreation Board.

Cedar Crest Golf Course is the oldest of six golf courses in the Dallas Park and Recreation collection, and the only course to have hosted tournaments on a national level including a major championship.

“Cedar Crest has been the stage for larger-than-life and blue-ribbon moments in golf history. Its rich legacy continues with this tournament’s debut, a game changer for our park system and for golf in this country,” said John D. Jenkins, director, Dallas Park and Recreation Department. “Hosting the Southwest Airlines Showcase is significant not only for Cedar Crest but also for Oak Cliff and southern Dallas neighborhoods. Recent enhancements to the greens and facility will give golfers an incredible playing experience.”

In addition to Southwest Airlines as Title Sponsor, the Louis L. Borick Foundation will serve as a “Foundational” supporter of the event. Two corporate “Proud Partners” are being pursued as well as various “Official Sponsor” partnerships.

Eligibility criteria for the 42-player invitational field of Black collegiate contestants will include, but not be limited to:

  1. Must still be in college
  2. Top TBD available men based on rankings
  3. Top TBD available women based on rankings
  4. Other accomplished men and women players in college
  5. Up to eight (8) tournament/sponsor exemptions; 4 men / 4 women

The final field of contestants is scheduled to be announced in late June or early July of 2023, after the completion of the college golf season and championships.

JACKSON T. STEPHENS CUP ANNOUNCES FIELD FOR SECOND ANNUAL TOURNAMENT; GOLF CHANNEL RETURNS WITH LIVE COVERAGE

July 26, 2022 By admin

LITTLE ROCK, ARKANSAS – After a successful debut in 2021, The Jackson T. Stephens Cup (The Stephens Cup), announced its field today for the second-year competition being held at Seminole Golf Club, Juno Beach, Florida October 9 -12. The Stephens Cup is a national collegiate golf tournament, named in honor of the late Jackson (Jack) T. Stephens, the former Chairman of Augusta National Golf Club.

This year’s competition will again feature one of the strongest fields in collegiate golf. The venerable

Seminole Golf Club, located on the Atlantic coast just north of West Palm Beach, is widely considered by

many to be one of the finest examples of golf course routing ever and was designed by the legendary

Donald Ross.

“Our goal is to create a distinctive and highly-competitive collegiate tournament that is comprised of

tomorrow’s PGA TOUR and LPGA stars playing some of the country’s premier golf courses,” said

tournament chairman Warren Stephens. “Dad (Jack Stephens) truly believed that golf instilled life

lessons and built character, especially when started young. Therefore, he would be very humbled and

proud that this tournament is named in his honor.”

“We are excited to host this year’s Jackson T. Stephens Cup at Seminole Golf Club,” said Jimmy Dunne,

President of Seminole Golf Club. “I, along with all our members, look forward to welcoming these

talented young players and hope Seminole’s rich golf history and traditions will inspire them to play

their very best. It will be a special week for amateur golf.”

The Stephens Cup field will feature seven of the top NCAA Division 1 men’s and women’s teams in the

country, as well as stand-out players from U.S Military Service Academies and Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) competing as individuals.

The women’s division is set to be one of the strongest ever in collegiate golf with all seven teams ranked

in the top 25 of the most-recent Golfstat NCAA Division 1 standings. Accompanying 2022 National

Champion and top-ranked Stanford University in the women’s field is fourth-ranked University of South

Carolina, fifth-ranked Wake Forest University, 11th-ranked Louisiana State University, 16th-ranked

University of Southern California, 20th-ranked University of Arkansas, and 21st-ranked Duke University.

All seven of the men’s teams are featured in the top 25 beginning with third-ranked Oklahoma State

University, fifth-ranked University of North Carolina, 2022 National Champion and seventh-ranked

University of Texas, 12th-ranked University of Arkansas, 16th-ranked University of Notre Dame, 17thranked Stanford University, and 23rd-ranked Florida State University.

Warren Stephens stated the Tournament is committed to expanding opportunities in the game of golf

and fostering inclusion among talented golfers. In addition to the highly ranked collegiate teams,

individual invitations have been sent to the top players from Historically Black Colleges and Universities

(HBCUs) and U.S. Military Service Academies (Army, Navy, and Air Force). “With these additions of

collegiate golfers from HBCUs and U.S. Military Service Academies, we celebrate diversity of education,

ethnicity, and background, recognizing the sport is stronger with representation that reflects America.

All of these young men and women are the future of golf and core to its growth. ”

The tournament format will feature 54-holes of stroke play followed by 18-holes of match play. The first

54-holes of team stroke play will be used to determine the seeding for the men’s and women’s fields for

the final day of match play. Stroke-play medalists will be honored on October 11 prior to the start of

match play. Tournament week will begin with a practice round and collegiate-am event on Sunday.

OKLAHOMA SENIOR CHRIS GOTTERUP WINS 2022 FRED HASKINS AWARD PRESENTED BY STIFEL

May 31, 2022 By admin

Recognizing the Most Outstanding Male NCAA Division I College Golfer, Gotterup Finished the Regular Season as Top-Ranked College Golfer in the Country

Live Coverage of the NCAA Men’s Golf Championships Continues Today and Wednesday on GOLF Channel

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., May 31, 2022 – Oklahoma senior Chris Gotterup was announced today as the winner of the prestigious 2022 Fred Haskins Award presented by Stifel, recognizing the most outstanding male NCAA Division I college golfer for the 2021-22 season. The announcement was made today by Brian Stubbs, executive director of the Fred Haskins Foundation, and Ron Kruszewski, Chairman and CEO of Stifel.

Gotterup, a fifth-year senior who is the top-ranked NCAA DI men’s college golfer in both the Golfstat and Golfweek/Sagarin rankings, transferred to Oklahoma from Rutgers for the 2021-22 season. He carded victories at the East Lake Cup and the Puerto Rico Classic, and recorded eight top-10 finishes in 12 events overall, highlighted by his two victories, a runner-up finish at the Big 12 Championship and two top-3 finishes. Gotterup finished in fifth place at 1-over par at the NCAA Men’s Golf Championships Individual Championships on Monday, and advances to team match play competition with his Oklahoma teammates that begins today.

“I’m kind of lost for words. Looking at all of these names on here, to be associated with these names is awesome,” said Gotterup upon receiving the award. “I never thought I would be here. This just gives another notch on the belt that you can do it, and to be on the same list of people who are Hall of Famers in the game is really cool. This is surreal to be honest, and it has been a great journey.

“I wouldn’t be here without my four years at Rutgers,” continued Gotterup. “It really changed who I was, coming from a lost freshman to maturing as a senior. And now having the opportunity with the COVID year to play for Coach Hybl has been a dream journey for sure. I just wat play the best I can and see where it takes me.”

“Stifel has been a proud supporter of the Fred Haskins Award for more than a decade, and we are honored to announce Chris Gotterup as this year’s award winner,” said Ron Kruszewski, Chairman and CEO of Stifel. “We salute Chris’ achievements both on the golf course and in the classroom throughout his collegiate career, and we wish him the best as he continues his journey in golf.”

“Chris is an outstanding individual on and off the course who has excelled under the challenges of a couple of unconventional college golf seasons, and we are honored to have him join the distinguished class of Fred Haskins Award presented by Stifel winners,” said Brian Stubbs, executive director of the Fred Haskins Foundation. “I would like to extend my sincere thank you to all of the players, coaches, sports information directors and members of the college golf media for their support.”

About Fred Haskins and the Haskins Foundation

From the seaside town of Liverpool to a quaint Donald Ross course in Georgia, Fred Haskins built a reputation for mentoring young golfers. Haskins was head professional at the Country Club of Columbus for 34 years, recommended for the position by the legendary Bobby Jones. His proteges learned the game in Saturday morning classes that cost a nickel. They went on to win more than 150 collegiate and amateur tournaments. Haskins, a master club-maker as well, died in 1981. Since its formation in 1971, the Haskins Foundation has been devoted to amateur golf and the presentation of the Haskins Award. This coveted trophy honors the year’s outstanding college golfer and the memory of Fred Haskins, an obscure club pro that spent his life nurturing and mentoring amateur golfers. The foundation, based in Columbus, Ga., oversees the voting conducted among college golfers, coaches and golf media.
