Presidents Cup, Day 3 Foursomes Matches

Jack Nicklaus Golf Club Korea
Incheon, South Korea

** In Day 3 foursomes matches, Team U.S.A. won one match, Team International won one match and two matches where halved.**

** Team U.S.A. leads Team International 7.5 to 6.5 going into the Day 3 afternoon four-ball matches.**

** Live coverage of Day 3 afternoon four-ball matches continues now on Golf Channel.**

Day 3 foursomes matches results
Grace/Oosthuizen       3&2                 Fowler/Reed
Holmes/Watson           halved             Leishman/Scott
Haas/Kuchar               halved             Bae/Matsuyama
Johnson/Spieth            1 up                 Day/Schwartzel

Dustin Johnson and Jordan Spieth speaking to Golf Channel’s Steve Sands following their match
Jordan Spieth – “Your blood is running. It is running through your hands, you know it’s there. I picked up a great trigger at East Lake on those kind of putts that I normally push out to the right, where I can really stay down through the ball. I’m looking at a spot just in front of the ball. It allows me to get over the tension in my hands and just make a nice, solid stroke over that point. We could have made it a little easier from 90 yards out. I could have gotten us below the hole, but man what a comeback we had there, that was some great fight. That was a huge point in the Presidents Cup right there.”
Dustin Johnson – “We knew we were playing good. We hit great shots on the front nine and we didn’t make a bogey all day. We knew we were playing solid. We were hitting it in the right spots and we were getting good looks at it. They just weren’t rolling in. Finally, on the back nine we made some putts and made some saves coming down the stretch.”

On Louis Oosthuizen and Branden Grace defeating Patrick Reed and Rickie Fowler 3&2
Tom Abbott – “They [Oosthuizen and Grace] are the dream team so far this week.”
Notah Begay – “They have been flawless, picking each other up in each of their matches.”
Begay – “Only fitting for him [Oosthuizen] to close this out, he has been so solid today.”
Gary Koch – “The duo is 3-0 and clearly the stars for nick price’s international team.”
Terry Gannon – “Fowler was in the zone the first day and a half. The putts since then have not been able to find the hole.”

On J.B. Holmes and Bubba Watson halving their match with Marc Leishman and Adam Scott after Watson missed a five-foot putt on 18 to win the match
Dan Hicks – “Oh and he pushed it outside the left.”
Johnny Miller – “Wow, the great escape.”
Miller – “That was a dead straight putt, Bubba.”
Curt Byrum – “He [Holmes] has really improved his short iron play.”
Jerry Foltz – “It shocks me he [Watson] doesn’t break a driver every day.”
Miller – “I think he [Holmes] has made the most putts out of anybody this week so far.”

On Bill Haas and Matt Kuchar halving their match with Sang-Moon Bae and Hideki Matsuyama
Hicks – “Sang-Moon Bae continuing his electric play from last night. He loves this course. Knows it well and has used it to his advantage.”
Miller – “He’s a crowd favorite here in Korea, and he is really getting the crowd going.”
Miller – “Internationals have had the great escape the last couple of matches on 18.”

On Dustin Johnson and Jordan Spieth defeating Jason Day and Charl Schwartzel 1 up
Hicks – “Spieth at 17. Spieth at 18. The U.S., for the 24th consecutive session, will have the lead at the Presidents Cup.
Miller – “Another Spieth clutch putt.”
Hicks – “Crazy how this came down to down to Day and Spieth on 18. Two guys who have just owned the world of golf this summer.”
Nobilo – “Anytime you put world number one and world number two in the same group, you will get a different dynamic.”
Nobilo – “He [Spieth] has a point to prove today.”
Hicks – “Doesn’t get much better than this, the top two players in the world battling it out.”
Miller – “If Spieth caddied for Dustin he might already be number one in the world.”
Hicks – “He [Spieth] leaves no stone unturned. Spieth and Greller are 100 percent into everything they do.”

On Schwartzel’s 2nd shot out of the bunker on 18 that stayed in the bunker when the match was all square
Hicks – “Disaster.”
Miller – “That was just a mis-hit.”

NOTABLE QUOTES: GOLF CENTRAL LIVE FROM THE PRESIDENTS CUP, FRIDAY (5-6 P.M. ET)

Golf Central Live From the Presidents Cup
Friday, Oct. 9, 2015 (5-6 p.m. ET)
Jack Nicklaus Golf Club Korea
Incheon, South Korea

**The United States lead the Internationals 5 ½ – 4 ½ following the Day 2 four-ball matches**

**Tee times and the start of Day 3 foursomes matches have been delayed by one hour due to weather. Matches are scheduled to start tonight at 7 p.m. ET live on Golf Channel**

Day 3 Foursomes Matches:
Match #1: Patrick Reed / Rickie Fowler     vs.      Louis Oosthuizen / Branden Grace
Match #2: Bubba Watson / J.B. Holmes     vs.      Adam Scott / Marc Leishman
Match #3: Bill Haas / Matt Kuchar             vs.      Sang-Moon Bae / Hideki Matsuyama
Match #4: Jordan Spieth / Dustin Johnson vs.     Jason Day / Charl Schwartzel

On Phil Mickelson’s post-match comments following Day 2 four-ball matches
(Mickelson: “I feel like we spotted the International’s best team 2 holes and they still couldn’t beat us. Just saying.”)
Brandel Chamblee – He [Mickelson] was being challenged by the member of the media with his mistake and the obvious and potential consequences of his mistake. Rather than solely saying he felt terrible about it, he disrespected two of the nicest, most gracious guys in professional golf, Jason Day and Adam Scott. So, if you are looking for a way as an underdog to find an impetus to spur you on to beat somebody, you look no further. If I was the International captain, I would have that quote playing on a loop in my locker room the entire time reminding them just how poorly smugness looks on anybody.”
David Duval – “That is what their alarms are set to, that is what they are waking up to this morning. It is not a ring, it is that loop. That was a little overboard, if anything.”
Paul McGinley – “We talked earlier in the week about not losing the moral high ground and remaining humble, to a large extent, and remain part of the team to a large extent. I can guarantee you from my experience, that is being played on a loop. That has gone viral in the International team room. They will be using that to galvanize themselves, and you can bet your bottom dollar that Nick Price is showing everybody on that team and they are discussing it.”

On Match #1: Reed / Fowler vs. Oosthuizen / Grace
McGinley – “Louis and Branden have been formidable so far, unbeaten. A new pairing, with Rickie going out with Patrick Reed. That is a little bit of a trial-and-error for the United States, so you’d have to say the Internationals will be favored.”

On Match #2: Watson / Holmes vs. Scott / Leishman
Duval – “The Bubba and J.B. pairing looks like the dominant pairing so far in the Presidents Cup. I do not see any problems for Bubba and J.B. just because they have jelled so beautifully well in this team format.”

On Match #3: Haas / Kuchar vs. Sang-Moon Bae / Hideki Matsuyama
Chamblee – “If he can come out early – along with his partner Matsuyama – and get up early and get this crowd raucous, it sends a message to the groups in front of them as well as the group that follows them that perhaps they can pull this out.”

On Match #4: Spieth / Johnson vs. Day / Schwartzel and Spieth’s post match comments following Day 2
Duval – “That is his way of letting out his frustration, it looks like, because we haven’t seen him get frustrated this year because he had no reason to…That is just him basically calling himself an idiot out there. He said they played poorly and he doesn’t know why. I’d say, ‘Well, because you are trying hard.’ You want to win for your teammate, your partner in the matches and it’s the Presidents Cup. There is some different added pressure that comes out at times. Even for the best players in the world, it shows up at times and you don’t always bring it.”
Chamblee – “I love his answers…he doesn’t say any of those clichés. He is so matter of fact about the issues he is facing, and he’s honest. That is what he is. Competitive and honest. Honestly, he has got to make more birdies than they did yesterday. He made one birdie, Dustin Johnson made one birdie, and they can’t afford to be playing mediocre golf.”
McGinley – “Let’s not be too hard on Jordan Spieth. His behavior this year has been exemplary. He has been a tremendous asset for the game of golf and how he has conducted himself. In my opinion, it is evidence why the big hitter and shorter hitter are not ideal when it comes to four-balls, because I feel that Jordan felt under pressure. I like, in four-balls, two guys with similar games, the opposite of foursomes.”

NOTABLE QUOTES – LIVE FROM THE PRESIDENTS CUP (THURSDAY, PRIMETIME)

**Live Coverage of the Day 2 four-ball matches airing in Primetime NOW on Golf Channel**

Match #1: Dustin Johnson/Jordan Spieth vs.        Louis Oosthuizen/Branden Grace
Match #2: Rickie Fowler/Jimmy Walker    vs.        Danny Lee/Sangmoon Bae
Match #3: Zach Johnson/Phil Mickelson    vs.        Adam Scott/Jason Day
Match #4: J.B. Holmes/Bubba Watson       vs.        Marc Leishman/Steven Bowditch
Match #5: Bill Haas/Chris Kirk                   vs.        Thongchai Jaidee/Charl Schwartzel

On the United States’ 4-1 lead after Day 1
Chamblee – “It’s easy to say that this is going to be a route. This is what a route looks like in the beginning… But it’s certainly within the realm of possibility that the International side can mount a comeback.”
McGinley – “I don’t think this is over yet… When a team takes a heavy defeat in one session, you can bet your bottom dollar that there is a reaction in the next session.”
Duval – “I look at the American side and I wonder where this team gets beat… The International team has to kind of chip away right now… If you get anything reminiscent of the first round matches today, then everyone will ask ‘how is there any chance [the International team] can come back?’”
Duval – “As important as anything [for the International team] is to not fall behind. Even if you split the session and you walk away with a tie, I think that’s a victory after the first day of matches.”
McGinley – “At worst [the Internationals] have to come out of this session 2 ½ to 2 ½. They’ve got to extend the flow of blood. But they can’t lose any more [ground] after taking a heavy defeat yesterday.”

On Match #1: D. Johnson/Spieth vs. Oosthuizen/Grace
Duval – “Oosthuizen and Grace really need to step up. The task in front of them seems mighty improbable when you’re talking Jordan Spieth and Dustin Johnson.”
Chamblee – “Dustin Johnson hasn’t played great yet in team competition… I think Jordan Spieth has that sort of influence where he makes people around him better… I can’t help but think [Johnson] will take measure of how Jordan Spieth handles situations like these. Because it’s that little bit that’s keeping him from breaking through and winning major championships. And it’s certainly within his reach.”
McGinley – “It’s a pretty formidable partnership… [Johnson] is certainly going to feed off the fact that Jordan is a very confident player.”
Gallagher Jr. – “This is the best matchup, the two strongest teams from both sides. The gladiators going at it.”

On Match #2: Fowler/ Walker vs. Lee/ Bae
Duval – “[Fowler and Walker] gel together on the golf course… They have a similar game and a similar way to how they go about things.”
Oberholser – “That’s an emotionally charged pairing. Those guys [Lee and Bae] are going to have an entire country behind them.”

On Match #3: Z. Johnson/Mickelson vs. Scott/Day
Duval – “When you get into a situation with Zach Johnson who plods around so beautifully, if anything it will free [Mickelson] up to play better because he’ll feel like he can really get after it.”
Oberholser – “He [Nick Price] is throwing the entire artillery arsenal at them with these teams. Emotionally, firepower-wise, he is trying to even this up with these pairings, no doubt.”

**The United States lead the Internationals 5 ½ – 4 ½ following the Day 2 four-ball matches**

**Golf Channel will re-air Day 2 four-ball matches on Friday from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. ET. Live coverage of Day 3 foursomes and four-ball matches will air on Golf Channel in primetime on Friday beginning at 6 p.m. ET.**

Day 3 Foursomes Matches:
Match #1: Reed/Fowler          vs.      Oosthuizen/Grace
Match #2: Watson/Holmes     vs.      Scott/Leishman
Match #3: Haas/Kuchar         vs.      Bae/Matsuyama
Match #4: Spieth/D. Johnson vs.     Day/Schwartzel

Internationl captain Nick Price speaking with Golf Channel’s Steve Sands following Day 2 play
Nick Price – “I’m so happy for Sangmoon Bae and Danny [Lee] the way they played. They were so nervous on the first tee this morning and I think they calmed each other down. Thongchai [Jaidee] and Charl [Schwartzel] they just played solid all day. Adam [Scott] and Jason [Day] they had a real battle today. And I think that was a phenomenal outcome for a phenomenal match. All in all I’m just so proud of those guys. My nerves are shot already. It’s Friday and we’ve still got three rounds of golf to go. It’s very nerve wracking just being back there and being powerless.”

On Mickelson/Z. Johnson being assessed a penalty for breaching the one-ball condition on the 7th hole to go from all-square to 2-down on the same hole
Phil Mickelson – “I tried to put a firmer ball in play to reach [the green] in two… This threw for me for a loop that we had a one ball rule. We’ve never really had it and I didn’t think much about it. But it’s my responsibility to know that. I should have at least asked before I teed it, it just had never been a thought for me. But as a player that’s your job to know that.”
Frank Nobilo – “Not to be a contrarian, but you’re all-square after six holes. How can you lose the seventh hole twice?”
Gary Koch – “I think this brouhaha lit a fire under Phil Mickelson and Zach Johnson.”
Curt Byrum – “What a day for Phil Mickelson. He has been something.”

On Sangmoon Bae making birdie on 18 to win 1up
Nobilo – “Surprisingly he did not play yesterday, but today he came out and delivered. Long time coming for Sangmoon Bae.”
Terry Gannon – “The biggest roar from this crowd all day long for Sangmoon Bae. Biggest putt you’ve got to believe for him ever.”

On the Day 2 four-ball pairings strategy and how the matches played out
Nobilo – “Super different strategies. America kept four pairings [from Day 1] exactly the same. The International team, the only pairing they didn’t change was that opening one of Oosthuizen and Grace.”
Nobilo – “That first hour of play, the Internationals were behind. It could have almost been embarrassing at the end of the day.”
Nobilo – “[The Internationals] showed up today. And an American side too that struggled. All the sudden when they hit the turn, those last nine holes they tended to go in the International’s favor.”

On the missed opportunities to win holes by both teams
Nobilo – “This is bizarre, let’s be honest. The standard of golf hasn’t been great.”

On Adam Scott employing both the cross-handed and claw putting grip during the course of the match
Roger Maltbie – “It tells you a lot about his confidence. He’s searching.”

On Jimmy Walker’s inconsistent driving off the tee
Nobilo – “He’s had it going out of both barrels today.”
Jerry Foltz – “He’s hit it [wayward] both ways, and quite a bit at times.”

On Danny Lee’s putting
Foltz – “He has hit so many lips today it’s frightening.”

On Bill Haas’ struggles on short putts
Peter Jacobsen – “He’s a streaky putter. When he’s hot he’s making a lot of putts. But when it starts going south for Bill it gets ugly.”

———————–

Golf Central Live From the Presidents Cup
Jim Gallagher Jr. – “The teams that had two players in play most of the time had success. A very exciting day for the Internationals.”
Arron Oberholser – “There’s a reason the [United States] 8-1-1 in the 10 Presidents Cups that they’ve played. It’s because at some point the U.S. separates themselves from [the Internationals]. So I like where it’s at right now, but tomorrow the Internationals are going to have to come out and play just as aggressively and as smart as they did today.”

On Match #1: Reed/Fowler vs. Oosthuizen/Grace
Oberholser – “You could throw out anybody and I think that they’re going to have a really hard time beating Oosthuizen and Grace.”
Oberholser – “They’re going to have to really think and strategize because Patrick Reed is not the greatest driver of the golf ball and he can put you in some bad spots off the tee.”
Gallagher Jr. – “I see two very confident players. Fowler is probably playing about as good as anybody. That’s a very confident team.”

On Match #2: Watson/Holmes vs. Scott/Leishman
Oberholser – “That’s [a pairing] I figured would not be broken up.”

On Match #3: Kuchar/Haas vs. Matsuyama/Bae
Gallagher Jr. – “I think Matt Kuchar will help Bill Haas with that calming influence. I saw that coming just because he needs someone to kind of pump him up a bit and keep him calm out there.”

On Match #4: Spieth/D. Johnson vs. Day/Schwartzel
Oberholser – “I’m looking at the Internationals winning this match. You look at the way Schwartzel putted today coming down the stretch. Spieth has got to pick his game up. He’s gotta turn this around in 16 hours. It was ugly today for Jordan. Really ugly.”

NOTABLE QUOTES: GOLF CENTRAL LIVE FROM THE PRESIDENTS CUP, TUESDAY (7-11 P.M. ET)

October 7, 2015 By admin

Golf Channel Notable Quotes
Golf Central Live from the Presidents Cup
Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2015, 7-11 p.m. ET
Jack Nicklaus Golf Club Korea
Incheon, South Korea

On Day 1 foursomes Match #1 between Watson/Holmes vs. Scott/Matsuyama
David Duval – “To send out the bombers first, I love it. The guys play similar styles so they’re used to playing from the same positions.”

On Day 1 foursomes Match #2 between Kuchar/Reed vs. Oosthuizen/Grace
Brandel Chamblee – “The combative nature of Patrick Reed seems to match up nicely with match play.”
Paul McGinley – “The Ryder Cup was great for the brand of Patrick Reed. Among his peers as well too, people see him in a different light.”

On Day 1 foursomes Match #3 between Fowler/Walker vs. Lahiri/Jaidee
Chamblee – “You could make an argument that [Lahiri/Jaidee] is [the International’s] strongest team… I look at this at probably the best matchup.”
McGinley – “If it was a typical Asian golf course with Asian greens and humidity, somewhere like Malaysia or Thailand I’d back them every day of the week. But they’re playing in South Korea in 66 degrees of heat with bent fairways and bent grass. It’s going to be a challenge for them.”

On Day 1 foursomes Match #4 between Mickelson/Z. Johnson vs. Day/Bowditch
Duval – “[Mickelson/Johnson] seems like a pairing of opposites. One is reckless abandon and one is very calculating moving around the golf course. I kind of like that in the foursomes play as long as you’re communicating about where you want to be and how you want to get around the golf course.”
Chamblee – “I look at a guy like Zach Johnson as a player that elevates everybody. He can mix up with anybody. He’s fabulous at a four-ball format. He’s fabulous in a foursomes format. You can count on him. Phil Mickelson is a little bit of a wild card.”

On Day 1 foursomes Match #5 between Spieth/D. Johnson vs. Lee/Leishman
Chamblee – “If you’re looking at the form of the 24 players, no one comes in here worse on form than Leishman. He’s missed his last three cuts… On paper I doubt that anybody is giving this match to anyone other than Jordan Spieth and Dustin Johnson.”

On the format change this year moving from 34 to 30 total matches
Duval – “Each team is going to have players that aren’t exactly on form. But if you can hide [those players] more than you have in the past, then you’re going strength vs. strength and you’re not exposing weaknesses.”
McGinley – “It brings more strategy into it… Stepping a guy down is a very difficult thing to do and it’s the man-management of that which is very important as well. It brings a whole new dynamic into it and I think it’s a good thing for the Presidents Cup.”
Chamblee – “I do believe that Nick Price has already won a considerable concession with the new format. To some extent, he’s already won it…”

On the potential for International competitors to drop the Presidents Cup from their schedule if they do not win this week
McGinley – “What they’re doing by saying ‘if we don’t perform well, we may walk away’, they’re putting themselves in a no-win situation… This positioning is a little unclear to me.”
Duval – “It’s a little disturbing, a little unsettling for the long term health of the event itself… It’s imperative that the International team competes strongly if not win this Presidents Cup.”
Chamblee – “This is the closest that golf gets to a team sport. It’s the closest that golf gets to a combat sport. The golf itself is pretty compelling, but the format makes it even more so.”

Jack Nicklaus speaking with Golf Channel’s Todd Lewis on the golf course and the competition
Jack Nicklaus – “The greens have got a little spice in them, we’ve softened them a little bit. The golf course is in great condition, and I think it will be a great event.”
Nicklaus – “I think the Presidents Cup teams are stronger than the Ryder Cup teams on paper. Yet we seem to lose the Ryder Cup and win the Presidents Cup… I think that all events go through a sort of ebb and flow. Right now I think the International team will have a very good chance to win. The format has changed a little bit… I thought that the beauty of the Presidents Cup is that you couldn’t hide anybody.”

NOTABLE QUOTES – MORNING DRIVE, WEDNESDAY, OCT. 7, 2015 (PRESIDENTS CUP WEEK)

October 7, 2015 By admin

Golf Channel Notable Quotes
Presidents Cup Week
Morning Drive
Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2015, 7-9 a.m. ET

On Match #1 between Watson/Holmes vs. Scott/Matsuyama
John Cook – “You’ve got four guys who can bomb it. But I’m a little curious about Adam [Scott]. He’s bringing out the short putter and going left hand low. But if I’m Bubba and J.B. Holmes I’m making him putt everything out. Test Adam straight away and see how comfortable he is over these two and three-footers. I think it’s going to be a very intriguing match.”
Chris DiMarco – “If [Scott] puts a beautiful stroke on it then that could be a huge confidence builder. If he doesn’t, then it could work the other way. It’s weird when we’re so used to seeing him with that long putter and how great he’s putted with it but it’s going to be tough seeing the short putter.”

On the Spieth/D. Johnson pairing
Cook – “Jordan is going to be able to hit some shots and wedges from where Dustin is driving it… There was a little bit of a rivalry there mid-summer with the U.S. Open coming down the stretch, but I think Jordan is going to be loving from where he’s going to get to play from. He doesn’t get to play from those places very often, so his short game will shine in this match.”
DiMarco – “It’s going to be a lot of short putts for Dustin Johnson. That’s going to be the key. Can Dustin Johnson capitalize on those short putts he’s going to have? Because Jordan Spieth is going to put them inside 15 feet a lot.”

On International captain Nick Price putting pressure on his players in needing to win this week
Peter Jacobsen – “What you’re hearing from captain Price is a way to motivate the players. When he says that the Internationals need to win so they can continue to compete in this [event], I think it’s a bunch of bologna. This is an opportunity for a player to represent their country in an International competition… This is a jewel in your cap… If the U.S. wins, in two years the International squad will show up and try and win again… If you don’t like it, if you’re not winning enough – play better.”

On the Mickelson/Z. Johnson pairing
Jacobsen – “I love the synergy between Mickelson and Zach Johnson. These fairways are wide enough that Mickelson can bomb it. I don’t see Phil missing a lot of fairways here. And having a strategist like Zach Johnson, especially in foursomes is going to be really good for Phil. [Phil] is so jacked up for this competition, because quite honestly he’s kind of a pseudo type captain on and off the golf course. I like Phil Mickelson and Zach Johnson together.”

On Danny Lee
Jacobsen – “He has worked very hard coming from when he won the U.S. Amateur at Pinehurst a few years ago. He struggled on Tour, lost his card, got his card [back]. Now he’s a Tour winner, and he deserves to be here.”

On Jack Nicklaus Golf Club Korea
Cook – “It certainly favors the bombers because of the par-5s.”
