Deion Sanders 1-on-1 with Giants Quarterback Eli Manning:
NFL Network analyst Deion Sanders sits down for a 1-on-1 conversation with New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning. The Super Bowl MVP discusses Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton, last week’s victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and his brother Peyton Manning.
– “No, I don’t think in those terms. I really just think about the opposing defense. He’s a tremendous player; he’s running, he’s throwing, he’s creating, he has all of the skills. Hopefully we can have enough good plays on defense to slow them down.” – Manning on if he feels pressure playing against a quarterback like Cam Newton
– “Those were the circumstances we fell into; played poorly in the first half and put us in a situation where we were down. Our guys stepped up and made some great plays.” – Manning on throwing for 510 yards last week against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers
– “I probably had a little sense of what I put my wife through, my parents through on Sunday when I watched Peyton in that first quarter. It can happen to the best of us and every interception has its own story, there is a reason for it. You have to make a split-second decision whether [or not] to throw this, how to throw this, and where to put it. Sometimes it doesn’t work out the way you want it to.” – Manning on his brother Peyton Manning’s three interceptions against the Atlanta Falcons
– “We’re not the bragging type. Peyton has four MVPs. Peyton and I are competitive when it comes to playing one-on-one basketball or we’re playing a round of golf. In football, we’re both competitive in that we’re trying to be the best that we can be; we’re not competitive against each other. I’ve always been trying to get to his level.” – Manning on who has bragging rights right now
– “It’s one of those teams where you want to try to have long drives; you want to have those 10, 12, 14-play drives. Let’s stay on the field [and] keep [Cam Newton] off the field.” – Manning on facing the Carolina Panthers
New York Giants-Carolina Panthers Pregame Analysis and Quotes:
– “We have seen so many situations – whether it be in Super Bowls, in second halves like last week – where everyone wants to count him out [and] say he can’t come back, and then he continues makes big play after big play. What I love about Eli Manning is he can make a bad throw here or there, but he has the amazing ability to make the big throw in key moments in games. He is going to need all of that tonight. [A] hostile environment, difficult situation – that seems to be where Eli Manning thrives the most.” – Kurt Warner on New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning
– “It is a difference when you [become the] No. 1 guy. We talk about Victor Cruz and all the success he has had, but since he has been there Hakeem Nicks has been there and all the pressure goes to Hakeem Nicks. Everyone doubles and tries to stop Hakeem Nicks and then Victor Cruz shows up and makes plays.” – Michael Irvin on New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz
– “A great asset can become a great liability. Those four rushers they have, if they get up the field too fast, Cam Newton will step right up and run it or throw it and cause all kinds of issues.” – Michael Irvin on the Giants defensive linemen
– “We say Eli [Manning] is missing weapons, but Cam Newton is a weapon by himself. Perry Fewell, the defensive coordinator of the Giants, has to be livid by what is going on [with the defense in the first two games].” – Deion Sanders on the Giants’ defense facing Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton
– “I always thought Ahmad Bradshaw was the heart and soul of that football team because he runs hard. They will miss Ahmad Bradshaw.” – Michael Irvin on the New York Giants playing without running back Ahmad Bradshaw
– “What I love is he’s making all of the plays that he should make. For a starting quarterback in this league, there are certain throws that you should make every time out. He continues to do that; then you add his athleticism, that big arm to the mix. I’ve been pleasantly surprised from what I’ve seen from Cam Newton through two games so far.” – Kurt Warner on Panthers quarterback Cam Newton’s development
– “[Panthers offensive coordinator] Rob Chudzinski allows Cam to be Cam. I love the fact you take the game to Cam rather than making Cam come to the game. Cam is devastatingly dangerous.” – Michael Irvin on the Panthers offense
Preview of Buccaneers Head Coach Greg Schiano Interview with NFL Network’s Melissa Stark:
Melissa Stark sits down with Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Greg Schiano for a sitdown interview on NFL Network’s First on the Field Sunday, September 23 at 7:00 AM ET. Provided below is a portion of the interview in which Schiano discusses the controversial kneel-down at the conclusion of last week’s game against the New York Giants:
Melissa Stark: “One of the arguments that has been made this week is that it is an unwritten rule that you don’t do that in the NFL.”
Greg Schiano: “Most of the time when people get angry, there is usually either miscommunication or missed expectations. I don’t think they understood what our expectations were, why we did it. They misinterpreted it, they thought it was something violent – but a lot of people thought that. I don’t have to answer to people. I know if I do something that is right [and] I can go to bed at night knowing that I didn’t do anything that isn’t right, then I have no problem. I believe what we did was right.”
Stark: “Next week, next year, are you doing it again?”
Schiano: “It’s like any other play we have in the playbook. If I think the time is right, I’ll call it.”
The entire interview with Schiano airs Sunday, September 23 at 7:00 AM ET on NFL Network’s First on the Field.
