Assault in the Ring premieres Aug. 1 on HBO

July 27, 2009 By admin

HBO SPORTS DOCUMENTARY ASSAULT IN THE RING REVISITS THE

ILL-FATED 1983 JUNIOR MIDDLEWEIGHT FIGHT BETWEEN

BILLY COLLINS JR.  AND LUIS RESTO WHEN IT DEBUTS AUG. 1 ON HBO

HBO Sports presents ASSAULT IN THE RING, a documentary about the ill-fated junior middleweight bout between Billy Collins Jr. and Luis Resto and its subsequent effect on both boxers.  Debuting SATURDAY, AUG. 1 (10:00-11:30 p.m. ET/PT) on HBO, the special explores the events that profoundly impacted the New York sports landscape and the world of boxing, and changed the lives of two athletes.

Other HBO playdates:  Aug. 1 (3:00 a.m.), 3 (11:00 a.m., 11:00 p.m.), 6 (12:30 p.m., 8:00 p.m.), 9 (10:00 a.m.), 12 (5:20 a.m.), 14 (6:30 p.m.), 18 (4:00 p.m., 12:30 a.m.), 22 (9:30 a.m.) and 29 (6:30 p.m.)

HBO2 playdates:  Aug. 2 (10:00 p.m.), 7 (5:30 p.m.), 11 (2:10 a.m.), 15 (3:30 p.m.), 27 (6:30 p.m.) and 31 (11:00 a.m., 11:00 p.m.)

HBO On Demand availability:  Aug. 3-31

“This film will revisit one of boxing’s saddest days,” says Rick Bernstein, executive producer, HBO Sports.  “But it’s a compelling story that we feel needs to be told, because so many lives were changed forever on that night at Madison Square Garden.  This is an in-depth, comprehensive examination of that tragic event.”

“There were so many unanswered questions surrounding what really happened and who, if anybody, was responsible.  What we discovered was much worse than had ever been imagined,” says director and producer Eric Drath.  “However, what we ultimately found was a story that went far beyond fact-finding; what unfolded before our cameras is a story of redemption.”

ASSAULT IN THE RING revisits a boxing scandal considered one of the sport’s darkest hours, and traces a man’s despairing journey following his alleged involvement in a criminal plot.  The documentary examines new evidence about this boxing match turned 30-minute assault, and reveals much more about the pre-fight activities of Luis Resto, his trainer Panama Lewis and the athletic commission representatives.

On June 16, 1983, undefeated prizefighter Billy Collins Jr. set out to fulfill every boxer’s dream of fighting in the world’s most famous arena – Madison Square Garden.  Collins’ opponent, Luis Resto of the Bronx, moving up from welterweight, had his own dream of rising to the occasion in front of hometown fans.  But what began as a match that Nashville native Collins was favored to win changed both athletes’ lives – ending Collins’ career dreams and landing Resto in prison.

Resto seemingly reached a fighter’s ultimate goal by upsetting Collins, but his post-fight victory celebration was short-lived when it was discovered that the padding had been illegally removed from Resto’s gloves by his trainer, Panama Lewis, before the fight.  Resto was subsequently incarcerated and banned from the sport, while the brutally beaten Collins went into a tragic downward spiral.   Resto gives his account of the story in the documentary.

Lewis, whose official career as a trainer came to an end that night, was also subsequently banned, and speaks for the first time in ASSAULT IN THE RING about the events of the fight and their impact.  Others interviewed include: former New York State Athletic Commission chairmen Jack Prenderville, Randy Gordon and Ron Scott Stevens; members of the prosecution, defense and jury from the 1985 trial in New York, including former New York prosecutors John Bicks and Thomas Moore; attorneys Robert Beecher and Mickey Joseph; referee Tony Perez; New York State forensic scientist Charles Pampa; former New York City police detective James Rodriguez; Luis Resto’s sisters, Marta Resto and Susan Lopez; Luis Resto’s sons, Brian and Luis Jr.; and Billy Collins Jr.’s former wife, Andrea.

HBO Sports presents a Live Star Entertainment Production; director and producer, Eric Drath; for HBO:  executive producers, Ross Greenburg and Rick Bernstein; executive producer, Barry Murphy; supervising producer for HBO, Joe Lavine; writers, Aaron Cohen and Eric Drath.

ESPN’s Champions Take Over Booth at Michigan Nationwide Series Race

Backseat Drivers To Call Action Without Play by Play Announcer

ESPN’s live coverage of the Aug. 15 NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Michigan International Speedway will have a new and different approach as the telecast will prominently feature five former NASCAR champions and will be done without a traditional “play by play” announcer.

ESPN’s “Backseat Drivers” telecast will engage NASCAR fans with the authenticity and experience of analysts Tim Brewer, Ray Evernham, Dale Jarrett, Andy Petree and Rusty Wallace. With Brewer contributing reports and analysis from the ESPN Craftsman Tech Garage, Evernham, Jarrett, Petree and Wallace will call the race from the booth.

“Our goal is to give viewers a different presentation, one filled with discussion, observations, and stories from some of the most respected champions NASCAR has crowned, and their unique unfiltered perspective on an event,” said Rich Feinberg, ESPN vice president, motorsports.

“This is an opportunity for our viewers to have the experience of sitting around watching a race with these champions from their couch at home, and without the traditional approach to sportscasting.“

Jarrett and Wallace were NASCAR Sprint Cup champion drivers in 1999 and 1989, respectively. Petree won the 1993 and 1994 championships as crew chief for Dale Earnhardt, while Brewer won the 1978 title as crew chief for Cale Yarborough and the 1981 title with Darrell Waltrip. Evernham won the 1995, 1997 and 1998 titles as crew chief for Jeff Gordon.

In addition to the five champions, the telecast will include pit reporters Dave Burns, Jamie Little, Shannon Spake and Vince Welch, while Allen Bestwick will host. The race airs Saturday, Aug. 15, at 3 p.m. ET on ESPN2.

About NASCAR on ESPN:
ESPN and ABC have comprehensive, multi-platform coverage featuring telecasts of the final 17 NASCAR Sprint Cup races, including the 10-race “Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup” on ABC. Additionally, ESPN2 is the home of the NASCAR Nationwide Series all season. All programming is produced totally in high definition. ESPN’s comprehensive, multimedia NASCAR coverage extends to ESPN.com, SportsCenter, ESPN the Magazine, ESPN Classic, ESPNEWS, ESPN Deportes, ESPN Radio and ESPN International, among other ESPN platforms. E:60 Returns with Exclusive Vince Young Profile, and “Cheese Racing”
E:60, ESPN’s primetime newsmagazine returns to ESPN at 7 p.m. ET, Tuesday, July 28, with an exclusive profile of Tennessee Titans quarterback Vince Young, and a look at “Cheese Racing.”

E:60 Vince Young

Vince Young: In his first sit-down interview about the murder of his longtime mentor, Steve McNair, Vince Young tells E:60’s Michael Smith he is ready to lead the Tennessee Titans again, and discusses the emotional impact of the murder and how he will honor his father-figure’s legacy. Young also provides details on the September 2008 night teammates feared he was missing and contemplating suicide after a game against Jacksonville in which he played poorly, was heavily booed by fans, and left with a knee injury.

Tijuana Boxing

Cheese Rolling: You’ve seen it on YouTube and television, competitors struggling to stay on their feet as they go full speed down a steep cliff, tumbling, turning, and flipping while racing and chasing cheese. E:60’s Jeremy Schaap was with the record 7,000 spectators at the event, dating back centuries, in which runners risk injury as they chase the cheese and race to be the first to reach the bottom of Cooper’s Hill, a 250-foot-tall cliff in Gloucester, England – 100 miles west of London.

Where are They Now: Georgeann Wells

SportsCenter (Sunday 10 a.m.); ESPN.com

First NCAA Female Dunk

If a player dunked a basketball, but no video of it was available, was it really a dunk? Well, 25 years ago, WVU’s 6-foot-7 Georgeann Wells became the first woman to dunk in an NCAA basketball game, but the opposing team’s coach refused to release the only video of the play. Without visual documentation, Wells’ dunk went unacknowledged for years until a reporter uncovered the proof that turned myth into an historic moment. Greg Garber reports.

OTL: MLB Hall-of-Famers Talk Steroids on Induction Weekend; Action Sports, Pushing the Limits
Outside the Lines (Sunday, 9 a.m. ESPN; noon ESPNEWS)

Xtremeties

MLB Hall of Fame: With the Baseball Hall of Fame enshrining three members Sunday, questions abound about the effect of the steroids era on future inductions, and on the very Hall itself. Low vote totals for Mark McGwire and similarly controversial candidates with Cooperstown-worthy numbers loom over Sunday’s ceremonies and the foreseeable future. With balloting for Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, Rafael Palmeiro and Sammy Sosa ahead, OTL speaks with some of the game’s greats gathered in Cooperstown about what they see on the Hall’s horizon.

Action Sports: Outside the Lines spoke with several past and present action sports athletes about the progression of their sports, and how the quest to perform bigger and better tricks has created greater expectations and increased risk.

Excerpt:
“The stuff that we are doing now wasn’t even considered possible 20 years ago, let alone anyone would ever want to try it.” – Tony Hawk, skateboarding icon who landed the first-ever 900 (two and a half mid-air spins) at the X Games

ROSENTHAL: LAROCHE TO RED SOX ADDS TO TEAM’S VERSATILITY – Earlier today, the Boston Red Sox traded two midlevel prospects to Pittsburgh for Pirates first baseman Adam LaRoche.  FOXSports.com senior writer & MLB on FOX insider, Ken Rosenthal thinks the deal adds to the versatility of the Red Sox.  “LaRoche gives the Sox an additional hitter they need at a minimal price in prospects.  He’s a left-handed hitter who can start at 1B, against right-handed pitching.  All-Star first baseman Kevin Youkilis can move to third base and the Sox can rest Mike Lowell. They need to rest Lowell because his hip remains a concern.  Youkilis’ versatility gives them multiple options.”

Winfield explanation on Pujols and Triple CrownOn Baseball Tonight’s demo field, Hall of Famer Dave Winfield stepped into the batter’s box to show why Albert Pujols is so dangerous at the plate. Baseball Tonight used an on-screen graphic to show Pujols’ “hot” and “cold” zones.

Gammons gives his Inside Pitch on the Halladay trade rumors
Gammons on Halladay's DestinationHall of Famer Peter Gammons spoke with Baseball Tonight host Karl Ravech about Roy Halladay’s most likely destination – Philadelphia – and what other general managers around the league are saying about the possibility of Halladay changing teams. Gammons also wrote a recent ESPN.com column about the topic. Analyst John Kruk shared a similar scenario from his playing days, which is transcribed below.

ESPN’s 20th Year All-Star Team Voting Continues
Rivera StatsESPN continues to celebrate 20 seasons of MLB coverage with fan voting determining a 20th year All-Star Team. ESPN viewers have voted throughout the first half of the season to narrow the list of 10 candidates per position down to three finalists in each category. This week, the fan vote will determine their favorite designated hitter over the past 20 years. The winner – Edgar Martinez, David Ortiz or Frank Thomas – will be announced during Sunday Night Baseball July 26. Last week, Mariano Rivera won the fan vote with 68 percent over Dennis Eckersley (19) and Trevor Hoffman (14) as favorite closer. Next week’s vote will determine the fans’ choice for catcher over the previous 20 seasons.

Kruk, on Phillies need to acquire Roy Halladay:
“I remember in 1993 we knew we were going to the postseason, we had a great team. At the trade deadline, they (the Phillies) pretty much had convinced us, ‘We are getting Randy Johnson. He is going to be a Philadelphia Phillie at the trade deadline. We just have to wait for the game in Seattle to end so we can make the announcement’. About 10 minutes after 12, the GM, Lee Thomas (and) Jim Fregosi, the manager, came out and said look, ‘We’re not getting him. We couldn’t get the deal done.’

“It was demoralizing. Yes, we went to the World Series, but we think we could have won the series if we had Randy Johnson. I think that’s the same way the Phillies players are going to look at this. ‘We had a chance to get him for prospects that we don’t know how good they’re going to be for a guy that’s established, and we’re going to have him for next year also.’ You’re looking at (Chase) Utley, (Ryan) Howard, (Jimmy) Rollins, these guys are in the prime of their careers. You get this guy for another year, who knows? The Phillies could win two or three World Series in a row with Roy Halladay, that’s how good he is. I make the deal if I’m the Phillies. I try to get the ace, put him with (Cole) Hamels, and try to run this postseason and next and win three in a row.”
