PHIL SIMMS
(On Baltimore-Chicago): It comes down to this, it’s not a cliché, every game is big because we’re talking about so many teams that are jammed into the middle of the standings. These two teams are trying to get it rolling, which is possible in the NFL. There is something to be said for a team saying they just need to get hot. When you get hot, you get confidence. You believe in what you’re doing. And you go from there. That is what both of these teams are looking at this week, trying to get that momentum going.
(On Chicago): For the Chicago Bears, the injuries are incredible; losing their quarterback. Anyone who says the Bears are better after losing Jay Cutler at quarterback – they are wrong. I have watched the Chicago games and I see plays that I say, ‘There’s another play that most quarterbacks can’t make.’ But Josh McCown did a great job at Green Bay and a really good job when he relieved Jay Cutler when they played Washington. Then you watch last week. He’s got a little more confidence. The team has more confidence in him. He needs to play really well for Chicago to win and overcome some of the injuries they have on the defensive side.
(On Baltimore): When you talk about Baltimore, Joe Flacco didn’t lose his talent during the off-season. Ray Rice didn’t become a different running back in the off-season. In the NFL, when you’re talking about the skill players, it’s about getting opportunities. You can’t do it by yourself. How many teams in the NFL this year have been derailed a little bit because their offensive line is in a state of flux? The Pittsburgh Steelers. The New York Giants. It still continues to be a problem for the Miami Dolphins. The Denver Broncos of late. How’s that going? All of a sudden Peyton Manning is getting hit. It changes the way we look at him. So, the offensive line is going to be a high priority for a lot of teams in the NFL this off-season.
