WATSON LOOKS FOR THREE-PEAT AT OUTBACK STEAKHOUSE PRO-AM THIS WEEKEND ON NBC SPORTS
Bill Murray, George Lopez, Mark Wahlberg Among Celebs Competing
NEW YORK – April 16, 2009 – Golf legend and two-time defending champion Tom Watson returns to the Outback Steakhouse Pro-Am this year, challenged by Ben Crenshaw, Hale Irwin, Mark O’Meara, Curtis Strange and NBC’s own Gary Koch, who will be taking a break from broadcasting to compete. NBC Sports will broadcast live coverage from TPC Tampa Bay (Fla.) Saturday, 4-6 p.m. ET and Sunday, 1-3 p.m. ET.
Dan Hicks will anchor NBC’s coverage from the 18th tower, joined by Roger Maltbie, Dottie Pepper, Bob Murphy, and interviewer/essayist Jimmy Roberts.
Comedian George Lopez returns for his second shot at the amateur title joined by actor and 2007 champion Bill Murray, tennis Hall of Famer Jim Courier, actors Mark Wahlberg and Michael J. Fox, and former NFL greats Emmitt Smith, Vinny Testaverde and Jerry Rice. They will be competing against last year’s amateur champion, linebacker Derrick Brooks, who returns to defend his title.
At last year’s event, Watson became the first-ever back-to-back champion, and looks to become the first three-time champ in event history.
“It’s been some 15 years since one of our own won a tournament and Johnny [Miller] did it basically on his home turf at Pebble Beach,” said Hicks “So maybe the moon and the stars are aligning themselves again in another Pro Am in Gary’s [Koch] hometown of Tampa. Put it this way, Gary winning wouldn’t be as surprising as Johnny’s victory.”
The Outback Steakhouse Pro-Am is a unique event that pairs celebrities and amateurs with Champions Tour professionals in a team competition. For more information about coverage, please visit www.nbcsports.com.
