MCCARVER: THE RACE IN THE AL EAST QUICKLY HEATING UP – With the Red Sox and Yankees jockeying for position and the defending AL Champion Rays trying to get back in the hunt, the playoff focus is again on the AL East. MLB on FOX lead analyst Tim McCarver calls this Saturday’s latest chapter in the Red Sox/Yankees story and looks at how the picture changed since the All-Star break. “I thought the Red Sox were the clear favorites the first two months of the season but I’m not sure right now. The Yankees have played with a lot of confidence, even when they aren’t playing well,” said McCarver. When talking about whether Yankee fans should panic that the Boston trade for catcher/first baseman Victor Martinez will give the Red Sox a clear edge, McCarver doesn’t see it. “You have some very smart people running the Yankees, first and foremost Brian Cashman and he’s not going to make a move for the sake of a making a move. If you were going to make a trade, what would you do? Would you pick up a starting pitcher? What would you give up for them? Believe me, they went through these scenarios and nothing made sense. The Yankees are playing well now so anything can happen.”
ROSENTHAL: CHISOX GM WILLIAMS THINKING BIG WITH PEAVY TRADE – The strength of the AL Central contenders is the starting pitching. Last week, the Chicago White Sox, swung for the fences by trading for injured ace Jake Peavy. While Chicago gave up a lot, FOXSports.com senior writer & MLB on FOX insider, Ken Rosenthal loves the deal for the ChiSox. “If it’s not my all-time favorite trade, it’s close. It might not be a good trade, though I suspect it is. But for sheer audacity and shock value, how can anyone not like what White Sox general manager Ken Williams pulled off? Thinking of how well the White Sox would match up against teams such as the Red Sox and Yankees with a postseason rotation of Peavy, Mark Buehrle, John Danks and Gavin Floyd — and never mind that silly little detail about the Sox needing to make the playoffs first.”

MOROSI: AL CENTRAL CAN UPSET SOX/YANKS PLAYOFF SERIES – With this weekend’s highly anticipated Red Sox-Yankees series, many baseball fans see it an ALCS preview. FOXSports.com national MLB writer Jon Paul Morosi says that the AL Central champion could knock off one of the AL East powers. “The American League Central champion will very likely have a better starting rotation than either of the eastern titans. And I don’t need to remind you of what that means in October. Two months ago, I wrote that Boston and New York would probably meet in the American League Championship Series. And I still believe they are the league’s strongest teams. But the landscape has changed. And neither team traded for a starting pitcher last Friday, at the non-waiver trade deadline.”
