NFL Media’s Jeffri Chadiha 1-on-1 with Seattle Seahawks Quarterback Russell Wilson
NFL Media’s Jeffri Chadiha sat down with Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson for an interview that aired on NFL Network’s NFL GameDay First and NFL GameDay Morning:
On why he has said the success he’s had in his career so far:
“A lot of reasons. First of all, the team that we have; the way we play together, the way we play for each other is the number one reason. I think also consistency; consistency in the sense of how I have to prepare, how I have to train mentally on and off the field. When the game is on the line and finding ways, there’s really been only one major moment that it hasn’t worked out for us. Hopefully that can change into the good again.”
On the trip to Maui with his teammates:
“We’ve been doing it the past three years. We went down to Manhattan Beach for the past two years and this time I wanted to get them away a little bit. Especially after the Super Bowl and everything, we kind of wanted to change the scenery a little bit so we went down to Maui and had an unbelievable time. We chartered all of the guys down; we had about 80-85 people on the plane, wives and girlfriends and kids. It was kind of a good family trip but also most importantly it was time for us to work. Just hanging out and really sharing those moments together, and also have hearts-to-hearts in terms how we’re going to process the next year.”
On his new contract:
“It doesn’t change anything. The goal is to be clutch when we need to be clutch and be consistent, and ultimately win football games.”

Quotes from NFL GameDay First
Every Sunday morning at 7:00 AM ET, NFL Network is first on the field with NFL GameDay First. Host Melissa Stark, and analysts Shaun O’Hara, Michael Robinson and Brian Billick provide the first analysis of the day’s games, while NFL Network reporters stationed across the league report from stadiums with the first on-location reports of the day.
– “He is the face of this team. He’s the guy that they all go to so I think he’s going to be sorely missed.” – Michael Robinson on Seattle Seahawks safety Kam Chancellor
– “He’s dug in. He’s a guy who really believes he deserves more money…He does a lot for this team, he does a lot of Pete Carroll’s dirty work; he talks to players that need talking to.” – Michael Robinson on Seattle Seahawks safety Kam Chancellor
– “One thing you don’t do as a player: you don’t ever give money back. And he’s going to give money back by not being there this week. He’s a captain, he has the C on his jersey. You want to fight for your money – I agree with you, holdout in training camp, that’s fine, do what you have to do. But when the games come, you have to show up because that defense is counting on him.” – Shaun O’Hara on Seattle Seahawks safety Kam Chancellor
– “This year he may have to be a 500, 550 throw guy and I think he can do it…I think he is going to earn that money this year and I think he is going to show everybody that he can be that 500 throw guy.” – Brian Billick on Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson
– “At the end of the day, you have to find a way to outscore Tom Brady…The additions at the wide receiver position I think is going to set Ryan Tannehill up to have his best season ever. This is his best supporting cast.” – Shaun O’Hara on why the Miami Dolphins have the best chance to unseat the New England Patriots in the AFC East
– “The only way to make up for it is to increase your pass rush. They’re going to need more from Randy Gregory. They may have to accelerate his progress and get him out there even more than they were planning on because they’re going to need to get after the quarterback.” – Shaun O’Hara on the Dallas Cowboys’ defense overcoming the loss of cornerback Orlando Scandrick
– “Jay’s going to have to micromanage the game and I mean that in every sense of the word. What defensive coordinators have done throughout his career is bait him into throwing in small windows. What he does as a quarterback with a strong arm is he falls for the bait every time. Just utilize the guys that you have and take what the defense gives you.” – Nate Burleson on what Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler must do this season
Quotes from NFL GameDay Morning
NFL GameDay Morning is the most comprehensive pregame show on Sunday morning, airing at 9:00 AM ET for four hours on NFL Network and taking viewers straight up to kickoff. Host Rich Eisen joins analysts Steve Mariucci, Marshall Faulk, Kurt Warner and Michael Irvin to bring fans the latest news, injury reports, pregame analysis and game previews. Additionally, NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport provides the latest inside information from around the league.
– “They’re the team to beat right now…Until you knock off the champs and this offense isn’t playing like that, they’re the team to beat.” – Kurt Warner on the New England Patriots
– “I’m concerned about the psychology of the Seattle Seahawks on game day. Kam is a big contributor to that. He’s a guy who speaks to the team before the team goes out. He’s the guy who speaks to the rest of the defensive backs before they take the field, he gets guys lined up.” – Michael Robinson on the Seattle Seahawks without safety Kam Chancellor
– “What Jimmy Graham will give you is instant touchdown ability when you get in the red zone…You put him out there, you toss that ball up in the air and he gives you something that very few people can give you.” – Michael Irvin on tight end Jimmy Graham’s impact on the Seattle Seahawks
– “The Green Bay Packers better than any other organization, they find a way to replace guys…This is another one of those situations. A young guy, Ty Montgomery, we’re going to get that down the field explosion that he brought to Stanford – he’s going to bring it to Green Bay. The Packers do this better than any other organization that I know. They are prepared for these situations.” – Marshall Faulk on the Green Bay Packers overcoming the loss of wide receiver Jordy Nelson
– “This can’t be Aaron Rodgers vs. Jay Cutler if the Bears are going to win this game because I don’t believe the matchup is anywhere close to even…They’ve got to be able to get the ball to Matt Forte. I believe he’s the key in this matchup.” – Kurt Warner on the Green Bay Packers-Chicago Bears matchup
– “For John Elway, he’s asking for Peyton to do something that he did being known as a gunslinger pretty much his whole career: [Mike] Shanahan came to him with this system and Terrell Davis – we are going to run the football first. What did that do? Two Super Bowls for John Elway…Hopefully Peyton can buy in to this very same system and get the job done.” – Marshall Faulk on Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning
NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport
On the latest on Seattle Seahawks safety Kam Chancellor’s holdout:
“I am told he is dug in as far as his holdout goes and does not plan to report unless the Seahawks compensate him monetarily. Now, there was some talk that the Seahawks would not negotiate with Kam Chancellor – I am told they have been negotiating. In fact, they’re currently $900,000 apart on his 2016 salary. There would be no change as far as his salary for 2015. But for 2016, the Seahawks have offered to move $3 million forward; they want to pay him $8.1 million in 2016 – Chancellor wants $9 million. At this point, that is the divide. In addition, the team has not yet been willing to fully waive the several hundred thousands of dollars in fines that Kam Chancellor has racked up. At this point, a compromise potentially awaits but there is nothing now, pending the outcome of today’s game, that could change.”
On Seattle Seahawks safety Kam Chancellor’s holdout:
“At this point, they are still at a stalemate despite players going into the offices of GM John Schneider and coach Pete Carroll and begging them [to] bring Kam Chancellor home. All of that being said, four weeks ago it seemed that they had a deal in place to bring Chancellor home and end his holdout – it fell apart. Depending on who you talk to, the accounts differ; one side got cold feet, the other side took too long to respond.”
On Oakland Raiders linebacker Aldon Smith:
“I’m told he’s going to play about 20 plays for the Raiders. He practiced on Friday and they really liked the condition that he showed up in. By the way, we know that Aldon Smith has had some legal issues; he was charged with three misdemeanors earlier in the week. I’m told he is eligible and will play at this point at least until October 6; that is his court date. But league officials have been involved in this; they know his entire situation and the Raiders are confident that he will be able to play throughout the balance of the season. Now, he is charged with DUI among other things. What Smith has said privately and publically is that he was not driving in this case; in fact, the cops showed up 88 minutes after the initial incident. All of these things the Raiders and the NFL have been aware of, so we will see it play out. But right now, we know that Aldon Smith will be on the field of the Raiders. And by the way, he took the fourth-most money among the contracts he was offered to sign there.”
On the New York Jets quarterback situation:
“The Jets did not know how long Geno Smith would be out. They did their due diligence calling all around the league and I am told the most interesting team they called was the Washington Redskins. I am told the Jets inquired about trading for now starter Kirk Cousins. The Redskins would not consider it, wouldn’t even talk about it; it just wasn’t clear why because at that point Robert Griffin III was the starter. Make no mistake, the Redskins knew what they had in Kirk Cousins. They would not trade him and they believe he’s a big part of their future.”
On Jim McNally and John Jastremski:
“The [Patriots] recently asked the league to reinstate them. I am told that NFL executive Troy Vincent wants to meet with both of them before he would even consider reinstating them. He doesn’t want to reinvestigate, doesn’t want to start the back-and-forth – simply wants to hold them accountable for some of their actions and their text messages and on video. I am told they face discipline and possible suspension for their role in Deflategate…[Vincent] wants to sit down with them and hear their story. Now, we can go back and forth about what Tom Brady did or did not do, but these two men it’s clear breached protocol based on the evidence, video and otherwise. Vincent wants to look them in the eye, hear their story and then likely hand down suspension and discipline for their role in Deflategate, which really has not been in dispute.”
On the relationship between Peyton Manning and Gary Kubiak:
“This can best be described as a work in progress. Make no mistake, it’s been a very tense and odd offseason for Peyton Manning. It started off with the Broncos asking him to take a $10 million pay cut; they settled on just a $4 million pay cut. They also brought in Gary Kubiak and for the first time in Peyton’s career, this is an offense with which he is not familiar, something he has had to get used to. Plus, they forced him to take days off during training camp, something he absolutely hates so this team can get a look at Brock Osweiler, potentially their quarterback of the future. They’re working on it. Peyton is in an OK place right now but it has been a strange offseason for him. As one member of the Broncos organization said to me, we are no longer making decisions for Peyton Manning.”
