PHIL SIMMS
(On Kansas City): The good thing for them is they’re playing at home. The emotions and the spotlight were certainly on them playing in Denver. NFL teams can’t be up 16 games a year so there’s going to be highs and lows when it comes to emotion and sometimes being ready to play. This (playing San Diego) is a big game in that respect. They have to go out there and really dig in and, of course, not take anything for granted. As I said, the big thing is they’re at home. So if they aren’t emotionally ready, the crowd will get them going. The other thing about Kansas City is that I’m sure there was a large percentage of the population that thought Denver would just destroy them. After the game was over, I’m sure many said, ‘Oh, you know Kansas City hung in there pretty good, on the road, really didn’t get any breaks.’ And believe it or not, it probably would almost be a confidence boost knowing that they’ve seen the best in the NFL and can hang with them.
DAN DIERDORF
(On N.Y. Jets-Baltimore game being a “playoff” game): Even though they won’t be mathematically eliminated if they were to lose this game, the chances of Baltimore making the playoffs at 4-7 would be microscopic. For the Ravens this is an all-in game. Plug in whatever words you want – desperation, urgency, must-win – that would describe the Ravens this week. The Jets could lose this game and still say they are in it. But, that is not likely the case for Baltimore.
(On N.Y. Jets): They wish they were getting a little bit better play in their secondary, but the defense is playing good enough to have a much better record than 5-5. They are having wildly inconsistent play on the offense and at the quarterback position. In their losses, that play has been just too much to overcome.
BART SCOTT (who played for both the Jets and Ravens)
(On N.Y. Jets-Baltimore): This game features two teams with their backs against the wall. The winner of this game gets a leg up on the last Wild Card spot. The loser is in big trouble. Whoever can establish the run will win the game. Running the football is the key to this game.
