NFL Media’s Andrea Kremer with Hall of Fame QB Jim Kelly
NFL Media’s Andrea Kremer sat down with Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly, his wife Jill and daughter Erin for an interview on NFL Network’s NFL Total Access Kickoff to discuss his health and recovery:
On what he learned about himself through all of this:
Jim Kelly: “I’m not as tough as I thought I was [laughing]. People don’t understand when they talk about Kelly Tough, yeah the physical toughness I was brought up [with], I was born with that. But for me, the mental toughness was one that I needed.”
On what the darkest moment was:
Jill Kelly: “It was in New York City. It was definitely in New York City when he was ready. He was like, ‘I can’t do this and I think this is it but you’re strong Jill.’ And he just kept talking. I remember my hands coming up and being like, ‘No, you don’t know that, this cannot happen.’ This man who has always fought, who has always said never give up – he cannot give up. We can do this at home. We have to come home. I think that was the turning point. Absolutely. There is no doubt in my mind that coming back to Buffalo was the turning point for Jim…We went literally from one hospital to a hospital over here; one hospital in New York to a hospital in Buffalo. He came to life.”
On the people of Buffalo:
Jim: “At times, there were people here that needed my support but I needed their support too. There is not a family around here any bigger than the Buffalo Bill family. Everywhere I turn, there are people praying for me, there are people that give me well wishes and to be honest with you, I don’t know if I would have been able to make it anywhere else.”

Quotes from NFL Total Access Kickoff
– “Let’s make no mistake: they are where they are right now – talking about [in] playoff position – because of their defense.” – Bill Cowher on the Miami Dolphins defense
– “He’s an incredible coach and he’s done an incredible job. To stir that team to some wins after all they went through last year, and then to have that team right here…[at] 5-4 with everything still in front of them, it’s nothing but an incredible job.” – Michael Irvin on Miami Dolphins head coach Joe Philbin
– “Tonight [Sammy Watkins] must play this game shoulders up going against [Brent] Grimes. [Grimes] understands how to play coverage. Sammy Watkins, you have to understand the little things in your routes to make sure you don’t give this guy anything to jump and get interceptions.” – Michael Irvin on Buffalo Bills wide receiver Sammy Watkins facing Miami Dolphins cornerback Brent Grimes
– “He’s giving them leadership, he’s giving them accuracy, putting the ball in the hands of playmakers on the outside…He gives them someone in the huddle that gives them a sense of calm and sense of leadership.” – Bill Cowher on Buffalo Bills quarterback Kyle Orton
– “I love Andrew Luck. I believe he’s the future at quarterback. But whenever he plays against the Patriots another guy factors in: that’s Bill Belichick and what he’s able to do to a young guy.” – Marshall Faulk on Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck facing the New England Patriots
Quotes from NFL Thursday Night Kickoff
– “There is talk about these two head coaches maybe losing their jobs if they don’t make the playoffs. These two teams are trending upward. They’re better than they were at the beginning of the season, they’re better than they were a year ago and I think it would be a disservice to the players if you make a change at the head coaching position.” – Bill Cowher on Buffalo Bills head coach Doug Marrone and Miami Dolphins head coach Joe Philbin
– “He’s intelligent, he’s precise. He gives you a better opportunity to win than EJ Manuel.” – Deion Sanders on Buffalo Bills quarterback Kyle Orton
– “Honestly, I feel like we could be a top five offense if we’re clicking on all cylinders but that’s a big if. One week we are, one week we’re not. We have to get that down but it’s a new system. We’re halfway through the season now so no more excuses.” – Dolphins wide receiver Mike Wallace on Miami’s offense
– “He’s like a seesaw…He’s either up or down. There is no in-between. He’s either going to really bless you with his play or he’s going to destroy you with his play.” – Deion Sanders on Miami Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill
– “I love what I see with the Miami Dolphins and I love what I see in coach [Joe] Philbin and how he works this offense…He has a young group of guys that I think is starting to really play well.” – Michael Irvin on the Miami Dolphins
– “If I’m the coordinator, I’m going to travel him with Sammy Watkins because that’s the only thing offensively for Buffalo that can hurt you.” – Deion Sanders on Miami Dolphins cornerback Brent Grimes
