MLB NETWORK TO AIR SPECIAL THURMAN MUNSON SEGMENT ON MONDAY, AUGUST 3

Special segment surrounds the 30th anniversary of Munson’s death

July 30, 2009 – MLB Network will air on Monday, August 3 a special feature about former New York Yankees captain Thurman Munson, following the 30th anniversary of his death. Munson, who spent his entire career with the Yankees, died at age 32 in an airplane accident on August 2, 1979 in Canton, Ohio during his ninth Major League season. Munson biographer Marty Appel, author of the recently released Munson: The Life and Death of a Yankee Captain, gives an in-depth interview during the segment, telling first-person accounts of the accident that killed Munson and the aftermath that surrounded the Yankees in the days following his death.

The piece features interviews with Munson’s widow, Diana, and former Yankees teammates Goose Gossage, Lou Piniella, Gene Michael, Graig Nettles and the late Bobby Murcer. Included throughout are several clips of archival footage of the accident’s aftermath, breaking news from that day and the entire Yankees team attending Munson’s funeral.

“Thurman Munson’s death marked a very emotional time in baseball and 30 years later, that feeling still resonates,” said Tony Petitti, President and Chief Executive Officer of MLB Network. “Munson’s life and career continue to have a tremendous impact on the game and we feel a responsibility to fans to spotlight his legacy.”

The piece will first air between 6:00 and 7:00 p.m. ET and re-air throughout the night on MLB Tonight and Quick Pitch.
