ROSENTHAL: HOW WILL CUBS, METS GMS TURN THINGS AROUND – Despite the Mets and Cubs turning in disappointing seasons, both teams are likely to bring back their current GMs. FOXSports.com senior writer & MLB on FOX insider, Ken Rosenthal says Omar Minaya and Jim Hendry don’t have easy jobs. “I understand why Minaya and Hendry will keep their jobs as both are under contract through 2012. Hendry produced three postseason teams in the previous six seasons. Minaya built a club that came within one victory of the World Series in 2006. The problem is both general managers have created messes that could take years to untangle. The Mets and Cubs rank second and third in the majors, respectively, in payroll, and that’s just this season. Their future financial commitments also are stifling.”

MOROSI: RETURNING ZAMBRANO CAN’T SAVE CUBS’ SEASON – Cubs ace Carlos Zambrano made his return to the mound on Tuesday. As a distant second place behind the NL Central leading Cardinals, FOXSports.com national MLB writer Jon Paul Morosi says even the return of ‘El Toro’ won’t make a difference for the North Siders. It’s “probably time for a skywriter to fly across the North Side with the seasonal message: ‘NOT GOING TO HAPPEN THIS YEAR, EITHER. BEARS OPEN SOON.’ For this team to have any chance of catching the strengthened-and-streaking Cardinals, Big Z needed to show that he’s capable of pitching like an ace in September. But at this stage of the season, after two stints on the DL, he isn’t ready to do that.”

MARVEZ: KELLEN CLEMENS HAS SELF TO BLAME – FOXSports.com senior NFL writer Alex Marvez believes that New York Jets QB Kellen Clemens has himself to blame for head coach Rex Ryan’s decision to start rookie QB Mark Sanchez. “After a sound debut against St. Louis, Sanchez’s inexperience was exposed in Monday night’s loss to the New York Jets. Sanchez, though, has already shown resiliency to bounce back from his mistakes and the penchant for big plays – a trait Clemens has sorely lacked. I think Ryan is wise to take his lumps with Sanchez because of his upside rather than play Clemens, who hasn’t shown much of that quality during his time with the Jets.”
