“With the National Football League, its original AFL teams, and its fans celebrating the 50th anniversary of the league in a season-long tribute, we want to share this enlightening and fascinating film with our subscribers again,” says Ross Greenburg, president of HBO Sports. “We are very thankful to John Madden for his encouragement in recommending we make this encore presentation.”
REBELS WITH A CAUSE: THE STORY OF THE AMERICAN FOOTBALL LEAGUE traces the colorful history of the AFL from its genesis in 1959, when Lamar Hunt announced his intention to form a competitor to the established National Football League, through its ten-year rivalry with the NFL. Among the charter franchises of the AFL that now are members of the NFL are the Bills, Chargers, Patriots, Broncos, Oilers (Titans), Raiders, Texans (Chiefs) and Titans (Jets). In four Super Bowl showdowns with the more-established league, the upstart AFL won twice: the Jets in ’69 and the Chiefs in ’70.
Among the AFL personalities interviewed for the film nearly 15 years ago were: Joe Namath, Len Dawson, Nick Buoniconti, Gino Cappelletti, Otis Taylor, Abner Haynes, Ron Mix, Don Klosterman, Billy Sullivan, Ralph Wilson, Bud Adams, Al Davis, John Madden, Paul Maguire, Jack Kemp, Hank Stram and Lamar Hunt.
The documentary received critical acclaim when it debuted in 1995, with the Oakland Tribune calling the film “compelling” and “well worth watching,” while AP termed it “an hour of memories that no football fan should miss.”
The executive producer of REBELS WITH A CAUSE: THE STORY OF THE AMERICAN FOOTBALL LEAGUE was Ross Greenburg. John Madden served as creative consultant. Dave Harmon was coordinating producer and Joe Lavine was the producer. Dave Anderson was the writer. The film marked Liev Schreiber’s debut as narrator of HBO Sports documentaries.
