Third SEC “Storied” Film Explores the Coach Behind the Arkansas Men’s Basketball Dynasty of the Early 1990s, including his Bond with Former President Bill Clinton

On Saturday, Feb. 11, at 9 p.m. ET, ESPNU will debut 40 Minutes of Hell, the latest installment in the new SEC “Storied” documentary series. The film explores the rise, fall and re-birth of a legendary coach and a time when the state of Arkansas was at the epicenter of American culture.

About the Film

In the early 1990’s, Arkansas enjoyed unprecedented attention and success. Former Governor Bill Clinton was sworn in as President of the United States while the University of Arkansas became one of the top men’s college basketball programs in America. The man behind the Razorbacks’ rise to prominence was head coach Nolan Richardson and his “40 minutes of hell” playing style – turn up the pressure for an entire game and the opponent will eventually break down. It was an approach that embodied Richardson’s personality.

Growing up in El Paso, Texas, the coach endured segregation that he carried with him into adulthood. When Richardson became a coach after his playing days at Texas Western University, he looked for players who could execute his intense full court system. After a successful run at Tulsa, in 1985 Richardson became the first African-American head coach in the Southwest Conference when he took over the Arkansas men’s team. By the early 90’s, as Arkansas moved to the Southeastern Conference, the coach had turned the Razorbacks into a powerhouse, culminating in the 1994 National Championship. But what happens when the pressure becomes too great even for the one creating it?

As Richardson struggled to keep winning at the level achieved in the early-to-mid 90’s, he was under scrutiny. By 2002, his anger over criticism was palpable and he was dismissed. He fired back with a wrongful termination lawsuit. In 2009, after years of division, Richardson and his players were invited back to celebrate the 15-year anniversary of their championship run. The hiring of Richardson’s former assistant coach Mike Anderson has only further strengthened the once severed bond between the coach and his school as both work towards a path of healing.

Interview Features

The film, produced by NASCAR Media Group and directed by Kenan Harris-Holley, includes interviews with Clinton, Richardson himself, former Arkansas Chancellor John White and current Arkansas coach Mike Anderson. Players Corliss Williamson, Scotty Thurman, Corey Beck, Al Dillard, Ken Biley and John Engskov contribute to the film, as well as radio announcer Mike Nail, author Rus Bradburd and ESPN’s Dick Vitale and Ryan McGee.

SEC on ESPN

ESPN, Inc., and the Southeastern Conference entered into a landmark 15-year agreement for extensive football, men’s and women’s basketball, Olympic sports and conference championship content across multiple ESPN entities beginning with the 2009-10 academic year. As a result, ESPN Regional Television became the over the-air syndication home for Southeastern Conference programming and the largest college sports syndication television package in the country. In 2010, SEC Network basketball games were distributed in 71 local television markets, representing 39.0 million homes; SEC Network football games were distributed in 97 local television markets, representing 81.2 million homes, which is 70% of the U.S.

ESPNU

The 24-hour college sports television network airs more than 650 live events annually and offers over 600 original studio shows. ESPNU has seen a steady increase since its inception on March 4, 2005 and is now in over 73 million households. The brand is also available in high definition on ESPNUHD, now in over 20 million homes. The network has long-term carriage agreements with all 10 of the top multichannel TV providers – Cablevision, Charter, Comcast, Cox, DirecTV (Channel 208), DISH Network (Channel 141), Mediacom, Time Warner Cable, Verizon FiOS TV and AT&T U-verse.

NEW YORK – November 28, 2011 – Sirius XM Radio (NASDAQ: SIRI) announced today that Duke University men’s basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski – who became the all-time winningest coach in Division I men’s basketball history this month – will sit down for a Q&A session with an audience of SiriusXM listeners, Duke fans and other invited guests at storied Cameron Indoor Stadium in Durham, NC.

“SiriusXM’s Town Hall with Coach K,” a two-hour broadcast event, will air live nationwide on Mad Dog Radio, channel 86, on Wednesday, December 14 (7:00-9:00 pm ET). The special will be moderated by SiriusXM’s Chris “Mad Dog” Russo, who will interview Coach K before opening it up to questions from SiriusXM subscribers in the audience.

The event is part of SiriusXM’s “Town Hall” series, an intimate gathering with an iconic figure and an audience of SiriusXM listeners. Previous “SiriusXM Town Hall” specials have featured Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty and Coldplay.

“This will be a unique radio event in a very distinctive setting that is special to everyone at Duke – Cameron Indoor Stadium,” said Krzyzewski. “We look forward to hosting Chris Russo and the Mad Dog Radio team, as well as the SiriusXM listeners, that night.”

“Coach K and Duke Basketball are in the midst of a historic season and this is an exciting opportunity for us to bring SiriusXM listeners to Cameron Indoor to celebrate their accomplishments,” said Scott Greenstein, SiriusXM’s President and Chief Content Officer. “Our Town Hall events have been a huge hit with our subscribers, time after time delivering memorable conversations and terrific insight. We’re thrilled to have Coach K be the first sports figure featured.”

“Coach K has had one of the most extraordinary careers of any coach, in any sport, in history,” said Russo. “We’ve spoken several times over the years and he’s one of the all-time greats. To talk with him after this latest milestone, at Cameron Indoor, in front of a live studio audience will be fun.”

On November 14, Coach K recorded his 903rd win, a 74-69 Blue Devils’ victory over Michigan State at Madison Square Garden – to become the all-time winningest head coach in men’s Division I basketball history. In 36 years as a head coach, Coach K has built one of the top coaching resumes of all-time. He has compiled an extraordinary 907-284 record, led Duke to four NCAA Championships (1991, 1992, 2001 and 2010) and guided the Blue Devils to 13 ACC Tournament championships and 11 Final Four appearances. His teams consistently boast one of the best graduation rates in college basketball.

As head coach of the USA Senior National Team, Krzyzewski guided the team to gold medals at the 2010 FIBA World Championships and the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing. He will coach the squad in the 2012 London Olympic Games. Coach K was inducted in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2001.

Krzyzewski can be heard every week on SiriusXM hosting his talk show, Basketball and Beyond with Coach K, (Wednesdays at 7:00 pm ET) on Mad Dog Radio, channel 86. Basketball and Beyond, which is co-hosted by Dave Sims, features discussions on a wide array of topical issues and showcases Krzyzewski’s personal perspective on principles for life on and off the court, plus interviews with a variety of guests, including business leaders, entertainers, coaches and athletes. The show replays Wednesday nights at 11:00 pm ET on SiriusXM College Sports Nation, channel 91.

JOE BUCK: BLAMING LA RUSSA FOR MIS-MANAGING 8TH INNING IS MISGUIDED CRITICISM – MLB on FOX play-by-play broadcaster Joe Buck appeared on Fox Sports Radio this morning to discuss the St. Louis Cardinals Game 5 loss and criticism on the way Tony La Russa managed the 8th inning. Buck believes La Russa is not to blame and the Cardinal hitters are at fault for that loss. “The Cardinal hitters lost Game 5…period,” said Buck. “There is no way you can tell me that years from now when somebody looks back, the story will be who came out of the bullpen in the 8th inning. The game was tied! This is not what cost you the win. That’s just baseball. To blame that on the phone system and La Russa, that’s just crazy.”

MOROSI: IF CARDINALS ARE COUNTING ON PUJOLS TO SAVE THEM, THEY’D BETTER FORGET IT – After his all-time great performance in Game 3, the Rangers have decided that Albert Pujols isn’t going to beat them the rest of the World Series. FOXSports.com national MLB writer Jon Paul Morosi notes that after his heroics in Game 3, Pujols has been silent at the plate. “As short as our attention spans may be, we haven’t forgotten what he did in Game 3,” Morosi writes. “The issue is what has happened since Pujols joined Reggie Jackson and Babe Ruth as the only men to hit three home runs in a World Series game… Game 4: 0-for-4 with few pitches to hit — in a St. Louis loss… Game 5: 0-for-2 with three intentional walks and a botched, Pujols-initiated hit-and-run — in a St. Louis loss. The Texas Rangers have swung the series back into their favor, and they have done so by removing the bat from Pujols’ hands whenever possible.”

LYNCH: TEBOW INSPIRES GREATNESS; SUH NOT A DIRTY PLAYER – On Fox Sports Radio’s “The Jim Rome Show” today, NFL on FOX analyst John Lynch previewed the Detroit Lions at Denver Broncos game that he’ll call on Sunday at 4:05 PM ET. Lynch weighed in on Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow’s ability to motivate his teammates and Detroit Lions defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh’s reputation as a dirty player.

ON TEBOW – “There is something special about Tim Tebow,” said Lynch. “What I see is their defense playing a little harder. I see their offensive line blocking a little harder. He does inspire greatness. He brings the best out of people and that’s what great leaders do. There are some things that you wonder such as can this guy play quarterback consistently at a high level. A lot of that has to do with being an accurate thrower of the football. Against San Diego three weeks ago, he brought them back and gave them an opportunity to win. And this week, albeit the Miami Dolphins, he had a terrific comeback and there is something special.”

ON SUH – “I don’t think he’s a dirty player. He’s a tremendous football player,” said Lynch. “If I’m around Ndamukong Suh, I’d say lay off all the stuff after the play. That’s fake toughness. He doesn’t need fake toughness because he’s the baddest guy going in the league right now. Do your work in between the whistle, leave all the other stuff to other people that need to do that to make people think they’re tough, and play your game.”

Listeners nationwide can tune in week to week to hear Coach K as he approaches the all-time Division I wins record
NEW YORK – October 17, 2011 – Sirius XM Radio (NASDAQ: SIRI) announced today that Mike Krzyzewski, head coach of the Duke University and USA Men’s Basketball teams, will debut the seventh season of his weekly SiriusXM show, Basketball and Beyond with Coach K, on Tuesday, October 18 (7:00 pm ET) on Mad Dog Radio, channel 86.

Following the debut show a new episode will premier each week through college basketball season on Mad Dog Radio and will replay multiple times on SiriusXM College Sports Nation, channel 91.

Each week, Basketball and Beyond with Coach K features discussions on a wide array of subjects – from college basketball and other sports to current events – and showcases Krzyzewski’s personal perspective on principles for life on and off the court. Coach K and his co-host, Dave Sims, interview a variety of special guests, including business leaders, entertainers, coaches and athletes. Guests who have joined Coach K on past programs include U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, NBA Commissioner David Stern, Bob Knight, Joe Torre, LeBron James, John Thompson, Kobe Bryant, Pat Summitt, John Madden, Nick Saban, and NASCAR legend Richard Petty.

On tomorrow’s season premier, Coach K will interview Syracuse University head coach Jim Boeheim and University of Pittsburgh head coach Jamie Dixon, whose programs will join Duke in the ACC in the future.

“We are ecstatic to start our seventh season of Basketball and Beyond on SiriusXM,” said Krzyzewski. “This show presents a terrific outlet for us to connect with some of the top sports and business figures in the country. Certainly, Dave and I look forward to the conversation with such accomplished personalities each week. It is an honor for us to be part of the SiriusXM team, and more specifically, the Mad Dog Radio team.”

During last March’s NCAA Tournament, Coach K recorded his 900th victory as a head coach, and he enters the 2011-12 season just three wins shy of becoming the winningest coach in Division I men’s college basketball history. In 36 years as a head coach, Coach K has built one of the top coaching resumes of all-time. He has compiled an extraordinary 900-284 record, led Duke to four NCAA Championships (1991, 1992, 2001 and 2010) and guided the Blue Devils to 13 ACC Tournament championships and 11 Final Four appearances. His teams consistently boast one of the best graduation rates in college basketball.

As head coach of the USA Senior National Team, Krzyzewski guided the team to the gold medal at the 2010 FIBA World Championships and will coach the squad in the 2012 London Olympic Games. During his tenure as head coach of the USA team from 2006-08, Krzyzewski coached the team to gold at the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing, where they recorded an 8-0 record, averaged 106 points per game and won by an average margin of 27.9 points.

Krzyzewski was inducted in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame on October 5, 2001.

In addition to Coach K’s program, SiriusXM carries live play-by-play coverage of Duke basketball games throughout the season. SiriusXM is the leading broadcaster of live college sporting events and offers play by play from the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, Big East, Pac 12, SEC and other NCAA Division I conferences.
