“BIRTHPLACE OF NFL FILMS” IN PHILADELPHIA RECOGNIZED WITH STATE HISTORIC MARKER
Marker Dedication on July 23 at 2:00 PM ET
NFL Films, the most storied filmmaker in sports, is being honored by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission. The commission, on Thursday, July 23 at 2:00 PM ET, will dedicate a Pennsylvania State Historical Marker at 230 North 13th Street in Philadelphia recognizing the location as the “Birthplace of NFL Films.”
“The filmmaking arm of the National Football League brought the NFL into the forefront of popularity of American sports,” the commission wrote.
““It’s only appropriate that the birthplace of America will also be recognized as the birthplace of this iconic part of America’s favorite game,” said Pennsylvania Governor EDWARD G. RENDELL. “This historical marker will reinforce the important role that NFL Films plays in the lives of football fans across the nation.”
“If the ghosts of the gridiron do walk the night, it must be here,” said NFL Films President STEVE SABOL.
NFL Films began at the 230 North 13th Street address in 1965 and spent 14 years in the building before moving to Mt. Laurel, New Jersey.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of America’s national headquarters is now located at the Philadelphia address. The NFL Youth Football Fund has made a $2,500 donation to the local chapter of Big Brothers Big Sisters.
The historical marker honoring NFL Films is one of 21 to be unveiled in Pennsylvania this year. Others include a marker recognizing legendary college football coach John Heisman in his hometown of Titusville. There have been approximately 2,200 historic markers placed statewide since 1914.
NFL Films was founded as Blair Motion Pictures by Ed Sabol. In April 1965, Commissioner Pete Rozelle negotiated on behalf of the NFL clubs to purchase the filmmaker and rename it NFL Films. NFL Films has received numerous accolades since, including 97 Sports Emmy Awards. Its “Road to the Super Bowl” production is the longest running (40th anniversary this year) and most honored (28 Emmys) annual sports special on television.
