Fred Couples, Tom Watson & Bernhard Langer Highlight Field At 2010 U.S. Senior Open This Weekend On NBC Sports

NEW YORK – July 29, 2010 – Fred Couples, Tom Watson and Senior British Open champion Bernhard Langer lead an impressive field at the 2010 U.S. Senior Open from Sahalee Country Club in Seattle, Wash., this Saturday and Sunday from 4-7 p.m. ET live on NBC Sports.

Host Dan Hicks and analyst Gary Koch anchor coverage from the 18th hole tower. They are joined by tower reporter Mark Rolfing, and course reporters Roger Maltbie and Dottie Pepper.

Couples, a Seattle native in his rookie year on the Champions Tour, has played nine events this year with three wins, two second-place finishes and seven Top 10s. Watson has a win and three Top 10s this year in six appearances. Langer won this past week’s Senior British Open and propelled himself into first place on the points list. The field includes other popular Champions Tour players, including: Tom Lehman, who won the Senior PGA Championship earlier this year; U.S. Ryder Cup team captain Corey Pavin, who finished second to Langer last week at the Senior British; and defending champion Fred Funk.

This is the U.S. Senior Open’s first trip to Sahalee Country Club, rated one of the top 100 courses in America. Sahalee, which means “High Heavenly Ground”, opened in 1969 among the tall majestic Cedar and Douglas Fir native to the Pacific Northwest. The club hosted the 1998 PGA Championship and the 2002 World Golf Championship-NEC invitational.

ROLFING ON U.S. SENIOR OPEN: “It’s the most important event in senior golf. When you talk to players about the one more event that that they want to win, almost to a man it’s this event.”

ROLFING ON FAVORITES: “The travel schedule from last week in Scotland to this week in the Pacific Northwest is going to be difficult. It’s a real test of stamina, both physical and mental. Experienced players will benefit. Tom Watson comes to mind. He’s been through so much…I see this more as a ball-striking week than a putting week. The course favors a player like Fred Funk.”

ROLFING ON SAHALEE: “It’s a big course. You will hear shots echoing through the course when balls bounce off the trees. It’s pretty unique. People are going to have trouble comprehending that this is a senior golf event. It’s going to feel like a U.S. Open, not a U.S. Senior Open. It will have a big event feel to it. You’re going to have to drive the ball well. It’s not a course you can really overpower. I expect experience and veteran players rising to the top by Sunday.”

Prior to its U.S. Senior Open coverage on Saturday and Sunday, NBC Sports will air two golf specials. On Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET, NBC Sports will air the third installment of Global Golf Adventure hosted by Mark Rolfing. On Sunday at 3 p.m. ET, NBC will air Golf Therapy: Life, Lessons, and the Pursuit of Par featuring Brian Baumgartner of NBC’s The Office. Below are descriptions of each program.

GLOBAL GOLF ADVENTURE – Saturday, 3:30 p.m. ET

NBC Sports will present an exciting new episode of Global Golf Adventure, a groundbreaking first-of-its kind golf, travel and adventure show produced and hosted by NBC Sports golf personality Mark Rolfing this Saturday, July 31st at 3:30 p.m. ET immediately prior to the network’s third-round live coverage of the U.S. Senior Open.

The third installment will feature Wales, host country of the 2010 Ryder Cup, and interviews with the ever popular Fred Couples and U.S. Ryder Cup captain Corey Pavin, who are also competing in the U.S. Senior Open. LPGA legend Nancy Lopez will offer a golf tip for TV viewers about the importance of pre-shot routines.

“This travelogue of Wales will appeal to and captivate the golf fan and the travel enthusiast alike,” says Rolfing, a world traveler, who visited Wales for the first time for this show.  “Wales is a beautiful country with a wonderful variety of links golf destinations. The anticipation and excitement for the Ryder Cup matches this October is palpable.”

In their conversations with Rolfing, Couples reflects on his career, his longevity and his rejuvenated golf game on the Champions Tour, while Pavin shares thoughts on his preparations and predictions for the 2010 Ryder Cup.

Couples On Why His Game Has Been Rejuvenated at 50: “You know when I got out here in ’80 (rookie year), I didn’t know if I’d be out here in ’81 or ‘82 and now we’re 2010 still grinding. My game with the help of the equipment really has gotten better…why that is I don’t know. I seem to hit better shots, I’m not nearly as erratic. And when I feel good, I really feel like I can compete at a high level.”

GOLF THERAPY: LIFE, LESSONS, AND THE PURSUIT OF PAR – Sunday, 3 p.m. ET

“Golf Therapy” opens with Brian Baumgartner (“The Office”), who is an avid golfer in real life, confiding in his therapist that he’s having nightmares about his annual appearance in the American Century Championship, an annual Lake Tahoe celebrity golf tournament.

To prepare him for the event, Brian’s shrink, played by Rachael Harris (“The Hangover”), sends him to visit with superstar athletes who offer mental and physical tips to elevate his golf game.

Baumgartner: “This project has been an amazing experience for me. My goal is to create content for television that is funny, but utilizes the unique voice of current and past stars from the world of sports. I could not be more pleased.”

Among Baumgartner’s celebrity coaches are: Pau Gasol (Los Angeles Lakers center), CC Sabathia (New York Yankees pitcher), Michael Strahan (former New York Giants defensive lineman), and Nastia Liukin (U.S. Olympic Gold Medal-winning gymnast), Justin Tuck (New York Giants defensive lineman), Laila Ali (boxer and daughter of Muhammad Ali), Aaron Rodgers (Green Bay Packers quarterback), and Ozzie Smith (Major League Baseball Hall of Famer).

ESPN 3D to Telecast X Games 16 to Australia

For the first time, ESPN 3D will telecast outside the United States.  ESPN 3D, in conjunction with FOXTEL and AUSTAR in Australia, will provide extreme sports fans eight hours of coverage from X Games 16 in Los Angeles, California. Fans in Australia can look forward to seeing the best in action sports compete on Friday, July 30 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. AEST and Sunday, August 1 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.AEST on channel 206 on FOXTEL and AUSTAR. (Fans in the United States will see this programming on Thursday, July 29 from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. ET and on Saturday, Aug. 1 from 7 p.m. until Midnight ET.)  During these telecasts ESPN 3D will debut new 3D cameras, including a 3D camera from inside a rally car, providing a driver’s point of view.   ESPN 3D’s telecast of X Games 16 in Australia will be available to all FOXTEL iQ2 and AUSTAR MyStar HD subscribers with a 3D ready television.

FOX Sports Game Analyst Joins NFL Network’s All-Pro Analyst Lineup on NFL Total Access

Former Dallas Cowboys fullback and broadcast veteran Daryl “Moose” Johnston has joined NFL Network as an analyst, it was announced today.

Johnston, a three-time Super Bowl champion and two-time Pro Bowl selection who spent his entire 10-year NFL career with the Dallas Cowboys, will serve as an in-studio analyst on NFL Total Access and contribute to other NFL Network shows and specials. He will make his debut on NFL Total Access on Thursday, July 29 at 7:00 PM ET.

Johnston will also continue his role as a game analyst for Fox NFL Sunday this fall.

“Daryl joins our already deep roster of champions on NFL Network” said Eric Weinberger, NFL Network executive producer. “He has become one of the top game voices in the business at FOX Sports and we are looking forward to extending his analysis and opinions to our studio shows and specials.”

A native of Youngstown, NY, Johnston is a 1989 graduate of Syracuse University where as a member of the Orangemen football team he earned All-Big East honors in 1988 an was an All-American in 1989.

Bridgestone Returns As Title Sponsor For Third Consecutive Year

NEW YORK (July 27, 2010) – Representatives from the National Hockey League, the Pittsburgh Penguins, Washington Capitals, Pittsburgh Steelers, the National Hockey League Players’ Association, the city of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County gathered today at Heinz Field to discuss plans for the 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic®.  The League today also unveiled the official logo for the 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic and the special team logos for the Penguins and Capitals.

In May, the NHL announced that Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins will battle Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals on New Year’s Day in a regular-season game at Heinz Field, home of the Steelers, at 1 p.m. ET.  The NHL’s fiercest rivalry will be re-ignited in the event Forbes magazine calls “the best new sporting event” of the last decade.

The 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic will mark the fourth consecutive season the NHL has played a regular-season outdoor game on New Year’s Day.  The Buffalo Sabres hosted the Penguins at Ralph Wilson Stadium on New Year’s Day 2008, the Chicago Blackhawks hosted the Detroit Red Wings at Wrigley Field on New Year’s Day 2009 and the Boston Bruins hosted the Philadelphia Flyers at Fenway Park on New Year’s Day 2010.

More than 5.5 million viewers watched the game on North American television, and NHL.com attracted nearly 1 million unique visitors on January 1. Demand for tickets exceeded 307,000 requests, and investment in the Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic by NHL corporate marketing partners increased 66% from 2009 with 16 partners spending more than $10 million.

The NHL’s two biggest stars, Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin, bring their rivalry to the big stage of the 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic.  Their rivalry has blossomed into one of the most intriguing individual matchups in all of sports.  Both No. 1 overall draft choices (Ovechkin 2004 and Crosby 2005), the superstars have been linked since they entered the League at the same time at the beginning of the 2005-06 NHL season.  At the end of that season, Ovechkin won the Calder Trophy as top rookie, with Crosby finishing second.

In 2007, Crosby won the Hart Trophy as League MVP and the Art Ross Trophy as the League’s top scorer.  Ovechkin won each of those prestigious awards in 2008 and added a second Hart Trophy, among other accolades, in 2009.  The pair has combined to win the last four Ted Lindsay Awards, given to the most outstanding player as voted by the NHL players.

The rivalry reached heightened levels during the 2009 Stanley Cup® Playoffs when the Capitals and Penguins squared off in an epic, seven-game series.  Ovechkin and Crosby dominated the series, each displaying a level of skill and leadership that propelled his club. Game 2 in Washington was particularly memorable, as each player netted a hat trick in a scintillating, 4-3 Capitals victory.  In the end, the Penguins prevailed in the series and went on to win the Stanley Cup.

The Penguins, the 2009 Stanley Cup champions, boast other top talents in center Evgeni Malkin (2009 Conn Smythe Trophy and 2009 Art Ross Trophy winner) goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury and center Jordan Staal.  The Capitals, the 2010 Presidents’ Trophy winners, counter with young stars Nicklas Backstrom, Mike Green and Alex Semin.

The NHL this season will play an outdoor regular-season game in Canada.  The NHL Heritage Classic™ will be played at McMahon Stadium in Calgary on Sunday, February 20 and feature the Montreal Canadiens and Calgary Flames.  It will be the first regular-season NHL game contested outdoors in Canada since the Edmonton Oilers hosted the Canadiens at Commonwealth Stadium on November 22, 2003.

NEW YORK, July 12, 2010 – HBO Sports, NFL Films and the New York Jets team up for an all-access look at what it takes to make it in the National Football League when HARD KNOCKS:  TRAINING CAMP WITH THE NEW YORK JETS debuts in August.  The first sports-based reality series – and one of the fastest-turnaround reality series – kicks off its five-episode sixth season, presented in HD, WEDNESDAY, AUG. 11 (10:00-11:00 p.m. ET/PT), exclusively on HBO.  Other hour-long episodes debut subsequent Wednesdays at the same time, culminating in the Sept. 8 season finale.  Each week, the show will have an immediate encore play Wednesdays at 11:00 p.m. ET/PT as well as multiple replays on the weekend.

HARD KNOCKS launched with the Baltimore Ravens in 2001, followed by the Dallas Cowboys in 2002.  The series resumed in 2007 with the Kansas City Chiefs, winning a Sports Emmy®.  In 2008, the series returned to the Dallas Cowboys, receiving a second Sports Emmy® for production excellence.  In 2009 HARD KNOCKS spotlighted the Cincinnati Bengals franchise and the program earned two Sports Emmy Awards®.

Vince Cellini to host coverage alongside 2002 PGA Champion Rich Beem

Turner Sports and The PGA of America announced today they will offer coverage of the 92nd PGA Championship in 3D on Thursday, Aug. 12 and Friday, Aug. 13, on PGA.com and through TNT’s television distributors Bright House Networks, Cablevision, Comcast, Cox Communications, DIRECTV, and Time Warner Cable. The 3D coverage will focus on the par-3 12th and 17th holes at Whistling Straits from 3:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. ET each day. Host Vince Cellini who will be joined by 2002 PGA Champion Rich Beem will provide commentary and analysis on the holes. Beem also will provide analysis throughout the weekend during PGA.com’s extensive 2D online offerings.

The 3D production will utilize eight cameras produced specifically for 3D that will provide a unique look at course action and give fans a one-of-a-kind visual experience to watch the world’s best golfers play the course’s challenging par-3s. In order to experience

the event in 3D, viewers will need a 3D TV or PC display with matching 3D glasses. Fans can visit http://www.pga.com/pgachampionship/2010/3d to get more information about the hardware and software used to view the 3D production online.

In addition to 3D coverage, Turner Sports will also offer 20 hours of television coverage on TNT, live 2D coverage on PGA.com and on mobile devices, with additional details to be announced at a later date.

Mexican National Team Striker Javier Hernández to Make Manchester United Debut

ESPN2 and ESPN3.com will present live coverage of the 2010 MLS All-Star Game Wednesday, July 28, beginning at 8:30 p.m. ET from Reliant Stadium in Houston, Texas.  The special presentation of MLS Game of the Week series will feature the MLS All-Stars versus Manchester United, a team that has won or finished second in the past five Barclays Premier League seasons and one of the legendary clubs in professional soccer.

The match, to be aired in high definition, is expected to be the Manchester United debut of Mexican national team striker Javier “Chícharito” Hernández, the first Mexican to sign with United.  A highly sought-after transfer for Man U, Hernández scored two goals for Mexico in the 2010 FIFA World Cup.  Manchester United’s roster for the game is also expected to include:  Former Welsh national team captain Ryan Giggs, former England national team player Paul Scholes, Portugal’s Nani, former Netherlands goalkeeper Edwin Van der Sar, and more.

Fresh off leading the U.S. Men’s National Team to its historic 2010 FIFA World Cup performance, Los Angeles Galaxy’s Landon Donovan, the league leader in assists, will lead a roster of 18 top-tier MLS players against Manchester United, which won the Premiership for three straight seasons (2006-’09).  Other MLS All-Stars include the league’s leading goal scorer, Los Angeles Galaxy’s Edson Buddle; New York Red Bulls’ Juan Pablo Angel, Columbus Crew’s Guillermo Barros Schelotto and more.

JP Dellacamera and John Harkes, ESPN and ABC’s lead soccer commentator team for the U.S. National Team and MLS, will call the action, with sideline reporter Allen Hopkins.  Rob Stone, Alexi Lalas and Julie Foudy will host the studio coverage including pre-game, halftime and post-game segments live from Reliant Stadium.  Coverage will also include live, in-game interviews with select coaches and/or players.

Season-Opener at Newly Renovated Arrowhead Stadium Part of MNF Doubleheader Sept. 13 at 10:15 p.m. ET

ESPN play-by-play voice Brad Nessler and NFL studio analyst Trent Dilfer will call the San Diego Chargers at Kansas City Chiefs, the second game of ESPN’s season-opening Monday Night Football doubleheader September 13 at 10:15 p.m. ET (9:15 p.m. CT). The AFC West matchup will be the first regular season game at the newly renovated Arrowhead Stadium, one of the NFL’s iconic venues, and the first MNF game in Kansas City since Nov. 22, 2004.

MNF reporter Suzy Kolber will also be in Kansas City on game day to provide updates on the teams throughout the day. The Chargers-Chiefs will follow the Baltimore Ravens-New York Jets telecast (7 p.m.) when the MNF commentator team of Mike Tirico and analysts Jon Gruden and Ron Jaworski makes its regular season debut.

“We have a deep roster of football experts and this will be a great pairing for the Monday Night Football doubleheader that will appeal to fans with Brad, one of the best live event commentators in the business, and Trent, who always offers fresh and informed perspectives and is just a few seasons removed from his own days as a Super Bowl-winning NFL quarterback,” said Norby Williamson, ESPN executive vice president, production.

Nessler is making his second appearance in the MNF booth. During the first year of ESPN’s season-opening doubleheader (2006), he worked alongside Jaworski and former NFL head coach Dick Vermeil – a pairing that earned much praise from viewers – to call the Chargers-Raiders. Nessler has served as a play-by-play commentator for college football and basketball since joining ESPN and ABC in 1992. This fall, Nessler will team with Todd Blackledge to form one of ESPN’s top college football teams. In addition to his Chargers-Chiefs assignment, Nessler will work with Blackledge two days earlier (Sept. 11) to call Miami-Ohio State in Columbus (3:40 p.m., ESPN and ESPN3.com), one of the biggest college football games of the opening month of the season. Before arriving at ESPN, Nessler handled radio play-by-play for the Atlanta Falcons (1982-88) and Minnesota Vikings (1988-89). He has also served as play-by-play announcer for Miami Dolphins preseason telecasts.

Dilfer, the 14-year NFL veteran and Super Bowl-winning quarterback for the Baltimore Ravens, is a studio analyst for a variety of ESPN programs: NFL Live, NFL PrimeTime, SportsCenter, and Monday Night Countdown. He has also regularly contributed analysis to ESPN Radio programs and to ESPN’s annual Super Bowl week and NFL Draft coverage since joining the company in July 2008 – on the same day he announced his retirement from the NFL. While the Chargers-Chiefs will be Dilfer’s debut in the MNF booth, he worked the Ball State-Central Michigan college football game for ESPN last fall and will work the Cincinnati-Fresno State game Sept. 4 (10 p.m., ESPN2 and ESPN3.com).

Senior coordinating producer Tim Corrigan, who has overseen ESPN’s season-opening MNF doubleheader game the past four seasons, and director Mike Schwab, will oversee production of the San Diego-Kansas City matchup, which will pit Phillip Rivers and the defending AFC West champions against newly acquired free agent running back Thomas Jones and the Chiefs.  It marks the first time the nightcap of the ESPN MNF doubleheader will be played outside San Francisco/Oakland since the two-game format was adopted in 2006.

ESPN’s Monday Night Football is the most-watched series in cable television history.  In four seasons on ESPN, Monday Night Football has registered eight of the top 10 all-time biggest household audiences in cable history, led by the Green Bay Packers-Minnesota Vikings telecast (10/5/09), which attracted cable’s largest household audience ever (an average of 15,136,000 million homes and 21,839,000 viewers). For the 2009 season, ESPN’s MNF delivered the 15 biggest household audiences (and top 14 among viewers) for cable television in 2009, averaging a 10.4 rating and 10,315,000 homes (14,382,000 viewers). It was also the first time on ESPN that the series averaged higher than a 10 rating and 14 million viewers for the season. Accompanying NFL content on ESPN.com, including “Monday Night HQ,” sparked an increase of Monday traffic to the site of 24% over the previous season with an average 84.6 million page views per week.

Live Reports from all 32 NFL Training Camps in 19 Days

ESPN senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen and NFL Insider Adam Schefter will depart on separate road trips later this month as part of ESPN’s “On the Road to Camp” – a cross-country bus tour that will take the ESPN duo to all 32 NFL team training camps in 19 days, July 29 – Aug. 16. Mortensen will begin his journey from Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas, site of Super Bowl XLV, and concentrate on teams in the West, while Schefter will depart the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio, and focus on the East.

Mortensen and Schefter will log more than 15,000 miles combined before both of their buses meet in New Orleans at the end of the tour on Aug. 16 at the home of the defending Super Bowl champion Saints.

“On the Road to Camp” coverage will include daily appearances by Mortensen and Schefter on SportsCenter and NFL Live, as well as Monday Night Countdown (before ESPN’s Monday Night Football preseason games on Aug. 12 and 16); reports on ESPN Radio’s Mike & Mike in the Morning (simulcast on ESPN2); blog items, video, interactive maps and daily post cards on ESPN.com; and regular updates on Twitter (@mortreport and @Adam_Schefter).

The “On the Road to Camp” segments will be sponsored by NHTSA, Orbitz, State Farm and Hanes. “It’s a post-card of America that Adam and I can share, some of it very unpredictable. How did I know I was going to end up in a Wisconsin cheese factory last year during my visit with the Packers….and make a fool out of myself?,” said Mortensen. “Maybe, just maybe, I’ll average four hours of sleep a night. But as Colts’ great assistant coach Tom Moore once told me at 5:15 in the morning, `Mort, you gotta love it!’ And we do.”

“The race – and coverage – is on,” added Schefter. “Mort’s doing the West Coast, I’m doing the East Coast and even Roger Goodell is taking his own trip. Whomever smells worst at the end wins.”
