Fred Couples, Tom Watson & Bernhard Langer Highlight Field At 2010 U.S. Senior Open This Weekend On NBC Sports

NEW YORK – July 29, 2010 – Fred Couples, Tom Watson and Senior British Open champion Bernhard Langer lead an impressive field at the 2010 U.S. Senior Open from Sahalee Country Club in Seattle, Wash., this Saturday and Sunday from 4-7 p.m. ET live on NBC Sports.

Host Dan Hicks and analyst Gary Koch anchor coverage from the 18th hole tower. They are joined by tower reporter Mark Rolfing, and course reporters Roger Maltbie and Dottie Pepper.

Couples, a Seattle native in his rookie year on the Champions Tour, has played nine events this year with three wins, two second-place finishes and seven Top 10s. Watson has a win and three Top 10s this year in six appearances. Langer won this past week’s Senior British Open and propelled himself into first place on the points list. The field includes other popular Champions Tour players, including: Tom Lehman, who won the Senior PGA Championship earlier this year; U.S. Ryder Cup team captain Corey Pavin, who finished second to Langer last week at the Senior British; and defending champion Fred Funk.

This is the U.S. Senior Open’s first trip to Sahalee Country Club, rated one of the top 100 courses in America. Sahalee, which means “High Heavenly Ground”, opened in 1969 among the tall majestic Cedar and Douglas Fir native to the Pacific Northwest. The club hosted the 1998 PGA Championship and the 2002 World Golf Championship-NEC invitational.

ROLFING ON U.S. SENIOR OPEN: “It’s the most important event in senior golf. When you talk to players about the one more event that that they want to win, almost to a man it’s this event.”

ROLFING ON FAVORITES: “The travel schedule from last week in Scotland to this week in the Pacific Northwest is going to be difficult. It’s a real test of stamina, both physical and mental. Experienced players will benefit. Tom Watson comes to mind. He’s been through so much…I see this more as a ball-striking week than a putting week. The course favors a player like Fred Funk.”

ROLFING ON SAHALEE: “It’s a big course. You will hear shots echoing through the course when balls bounce off the trees. It’s pretty unique. People are going to have trouble comprehending that this is a senior golf event. It’s going to feel like a U.S. Open, not a U.S. Senior Open. It will have a big event feel to it. You’re going to have to drive the ball well. It’s not a course you can really overpower. I expect experience and veteran players rising to the top by Sunday.”

Prior to its U.S. Senior Open coverage on Saturday and Sunday, NBC Sports will air two golf specials. On Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET, NBC Sports will air the third installment of Global Golf Adventure hosted by Mark Rolfing. GLOBAL GOLF ADVENTURE – Saturday, 3:30 p.m. ET

NBC Sports will present an exciting new episode of Global Golf Adventure, a groundbreaking first-of-its kind golf, travel and adventure show produced and hosted by NBC Sports golf personality Mark Rolfing this Saturday, July 31st at 3:30 p.m. ET immediately prior to the network’s third-round live coverage of the U.S. Senior Open.

The third installment will feature Wales, host country of the 2010 Ryder Cup, and interviews with the ever popular Fred Couples and U.S. Ryder Cup captain Corey Pavin, who are also competing in the U.S. Senior Open. LPGA legend Nancy Lopez will offer a golf tip for TV viewers about the importance of pre-shot routines.

“This travelogue of Wales will appeal to and captivate the golf fan and the travel enthusiast alike,” says Rolfing, a world traveler, who visited Wales for the first time for this show.  “Wales is a beautiful country with a wonderful variety of links golf destinations. In their conversations with Rolfing, Couples reflects on his career, his longevity and his rejuvenated golf game on the Champions Tour, while Pavin shares thoughts on his preparations and predictions for the 2010 Ryder Cup.

Couples On Why His Game Has Been Rejuvenated at 50: “You know when I got out here in ’80 (rookie year), I didn’t know if I’d be out here in ’81 or ‘82 and now we’re 2010 still grinding. My game with the help of the equipment really has gotten better…why that is I don’t know. I seem to hit better shots, I’m not nearly as erratic. And when I feel good, I really feel like I can compete at a high level.”


“Golf Therapy” opens with Brian Baumgartner (“The Office”), who is an avid golfer in real life, confiding in his therapist that he’s having nightmares about his annual appearance in the American Century Championship, an annual Lake Tahoe celebrity golf tournament.

To prepare him for the event, Brian’s shrink, played by Rachael Harris (“The Hangover”), sends him to visit with superstar athletes who offer mental and physical tips to elevate his golf game.

Baumgartner: “This project has been an amazing experience for me. My goal is to create content for television that is funny, but utilizes the unique voice of current and past stars from the world of sports. I could not be more pleased.”

Former Cowboys Standout Daryl “Moose” Johnston Joins NFL Network


FOX Sports Game Analyst Joins NFL Network’s All-Pro Analyst Lineup on NFL Total Access

Former Dallas Cowboys fullback and broadcast veteran Daryl “Moose” Johnston has joined NFL Network as an analyst, it was announced today.

Johnston, a three-time Super Bowl champion and two-time Pro Bowl selection who spent his entire 10-year NFL career with the Dallas Cowboys, will serve as an in-studio analyst on NFL Total Access and contribute to other NFL Network shows and specials. He will make his debut on NFL Total Access on Thursday, July 29 at 7:00 PM ET.

Johnston will also continue his role as a game analyst for Fox NFL Sunday this fall.

NEW YORK (July 27, 2010) – Representatives from the National Hockey League, the Pittsburgh Penguins, Washington Capitals, Pittsburgh Steelers, the National Hockey League Players’ Association, the city of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County gathered today at Heinz Field to discuss plans for the 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic®.  The League today also unveiled the official logo for the 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic and the special team logos for the Penguins and Capitals.

In May, the NHL announced that Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins will battle Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals on New Year’s Day in a regular-season game at Heinz Field, home of the Steelers, at 1 p.m. ET.  The NHL’s fiercest rivalry will be re-ignited in the event Forbes magazine calls “the best new sporting event” of the last decade.

The NHL’s two biggest stars, Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin, bring their rivalry to the big stage of the 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic.  Their rivalry has blossomed into one of the most intriguing individual matchups in all of sports.  Both No. 1 overall draft choices (Ovechkin 2004 and Crosby 2005), the superstars have been linked since they entered the League at the same time at the beginning of the 2005-06 NHL season.  At the end of that season, Ovechkin won the Calder Trophy as top rookie, with Crosby finishing second.

In 2007, Crosby won the Hart Trophy as League MVP and the Art Ross Trophy as the League’s top scorer.  Ovechkin won each of those prestigious awards in 2008 and added a second Hart Trophy, among other accolades, in 2009.  The pair has combined to win the last four Ted Lindsay Awards, given to the most outstanding player as voted by the NHL players.

The NHL this season will play an outdoor regular-season game in Canada.  The NHL Heritage Classic will be played at McMahon Stadium in Calgary on Sunday, February 20 and feature the Montreal Canadiens and Calgary Flames.  It will be the first regular-season NHL game contested outdoors in Canada since the Edmonton Oilers hosted the Canadiens at Commonwealth Stadium on November 22, 2003.

NEW YORK, July 12, 2010 – HBO Sports, NFL Films and the New York Jets team up for an all-access look at what it takes to make it in the National Football League when HARD KNOCKS:  TRAINING CAMP WITH THE NEW YORK JETS debuts in August.  The first sports-based reality series – and one of the fastest-turnaround reality series – kicks off its five-episode sixth season, presented in HD, WEDNESDAY, AUG. 11 (10:00-11:00 p.m. ET/PT), exclusively on HBO.  Other hour-long episodes debut subsequent Wednesdays at the same time, culminating in the Sept. 8 season finale.  Each week, the show will have an immediate encore play Wednesdays at 11:00 p.m. ET/PT as well as multiple replays on the weekend.

Vince Cellini to host coverage alongside 2002 PGA Champion Rich Beem

Turner Sports and The PGA of America announced today they will offer coverage of the 92nd PGA Championship in 3D on Thursday, Aug. 12 and Friday, Aug. 13, on and through TNT’s television distributors Bright House Networks, Cablevision, Comcast, Cox Communications, DIRECTV, and Time Warner Cable. The 3D coverage will focus on the par-3 12th and 17th holes at Whistling Straits from 3:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. ET each day. Host Vince Cellini who will be joined by 2002 PGA Champion Rich Beem will provide commentary and analysis on the holes. Beem also will provide analysis throughout the weekend during’s extensive 2D online offerings.

The 3D production will utilize eight cameras produced specifically for 3D that will provide a unique look at course action and give fans a one-of-a-kind visual experience to watch the world’s best golfers play the course’s challenging par-3s. In order to experience

ESPN2 and will present live coverage of the 2010 MLS All-Star Game Wednesday, July 28, beginning at 8:30 p.m. ET from Reliant Stadium in Houston, Texas.  The special presentation of MLS Game of the Week series will feature the MLS All-Stars versus Manchester United, a team that has won or finished second in the past five Barclays Premier League seasons and one of the legendary clubs in professional soccer.

The match, to be aired in high definition, is expected to be the Manchester United debut of Mexican national team striker Javier “Chícharito” Hernández, the first Mexican to sign with United.  A highly sought-after transfer for Man U, Hernández scored two goals for Mexico in the 2010 FIFA World Cup.  Manchester United’s roster for the game is also expected to include:  Former Welsh national team captain Ryan Giggs, former England national team player Paul Scholes, Portugal’s Nani, former Netherlands goalkeeper Edwin Van der Sar, and more.

Season-Opener at Newly Renovated Arrowhead Stadium Part of MNF Doubleheader Sept. 13 at 10:15 p.m. ET

ESPN play-by-play voice Brad Nessler and NFL studio analyst Trent Dilfer will call the San Diego Chargers at Kansas City Chiefs, the second game of ESPN’s season-opening Monday Night Football doubleheader September 13 at 10:15 p.m. ET (9:15 p.m. CT). The AFC West matchup will be the first regular season game at the newly renovated Arrowhead Stadium, one of the NFL’s iconic venues, and the first MNF game in Kansas City since Nov. 22, 2004.

MNF reporter Suzy Kolber will also be in Kansas City on game day to provide updates on the teams throughout the day. The Chargers-Chiefs will follow the Baltimore Ravens-New York Jets telecast (7 p.m.) when the MNF commentator team of Mike Tirico and analysts Jon Gruden and Ron Jaworski makes its regular season debut.

“We have a deep roster of football experts and this will be a great pairing for the Monday Night Football doubleheader that will appeal to fans with Brad, one of the best live event commentators in the business, and Trent, who always offers fresh and informed perspectives and is just a few seasons removed from his own days as a Super Bowl-winning NFL quarterback,” said Norby Williamson, ESPN executive vice president, production.

Nessler is making his second appearance in the MNF booth. During the first year of ESPN’s season-opening doubleheader (2006), he worked alongside Jaworski and former NFL head coach Dick Vermeil – a pairing that earned much praise from viewers – to call the Chargers-Raiders. Nessler has served as a play-by-play commentator for college football and basketball since joining ESPN and ABC in 1992. This fall, Nessler will team with Todd Blackledge to form one of ESPN’s top college football teams. In addition to his Chargers-Chiefs assignment, Nessler will work with Blackledge two days earlier (Sept. 11) to call Miami-Ohio State in Columbus (3:40 p.m., ESPN and, one of the biggest college football games of the opening month of the season. Before arriving at ESPN, Nessler handled radio play-by-play for the Atlanta Falcons (1982-88) and Minnesota Vikings (1988-89). He has also served as play-by-play announcer for Miami Dolphins preseason telecasts.

Dilfer, the 14-year NFL veteran and Super Bowl-winning quarterback for the Baltimore Ravens, is a studio analyst for a variety of ESPN programs: NFL Live, NFL PrimeTime, SportsCenter, and Monday Night Countdown. He has also regularly contributed analysis to ESPN Radio programs and to ESPN’s annual Super Bowl week and NFL Draft coverage since joining the company in July 2008 – on the same day he announced his retirement from the NFL. While the Chargers-Chiefs will be Dilfer’s debut in the MNF booth, he worked the Ball State-Central Michigan college football game for ESPN last fall and will work the Cincinnati-Fresno State game Sept. 4 (10 p.m., ESPN2 and

Live Reports from all 32 NFL Training Camps in 19 Days

ESPN senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen and NFL Insider Adam Schefter will depart on separate road trips later this month as part of ESPN’s “On the Road to Camp” – a cross-country bus tour that will take the ESPN duo to all 32 NFL team training camps in 19 days, July 29 – Aug. 16. Mortensen will begin his journey from Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas, site of Super Bowl XLV, and concentrate on teams in the West, while Schefter will depart the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio, and focus on the East.

Mortensen and Schefter will log more than 15,000 miles combined before both of their buses meet in New Orleans at the end of the tour on Aug. 16 at the home of the defending Super Bowl champion Saints.

“On the Road to Camp” coverage will include daily appearances by Mortensen and Schefter on SportsCenter and NFL Live, as well as Monday Night Countdown (before ESPN’s Monday Night Football preseason games on Aug. 12 and 16); reports on ESPN Radio’s Mike & Mike in the Morning (simulcast on ESPN2); blog items, video, interactive maps and daily post cards on; and regular updates on Twitter (@mortreport and @Adam_Schefter).

But as Colts’ great assistant coach Tom Moore once told me at 5:15 in the morning, `Mort, you gotta love it!’ And we do.”
