ESPN’s Weekend and Monday NFL Studio Features

ESPN’s Weekend and Monday NFL Studio Features

ESPN’s Sunday NFL Countdown Presented by IBM will preview the weekend’s NFL matchups Sunday at 11 a.m. featuring host Chris Berman and analysts Cris Carter, Mike Ditka, Tom Jackson and Keyshawn Johnson. ESPN senior analyst Chris Mortensen and NFL insider Adam Schefter will provide headlines and league news.

Sunday’s two-hour show will include reports from Rachel Nichols covering the New York Giants at Minnesota Vikings, Michael Smith covering the New Orleans Saints at Carolina Panthers, Mike Reiss covering the New England Patriots at Houston Texans, Bob Holtzman covering the Baltimore Ravens at Oakland Raiders, Ed Werder covering the Philadelphia Eagles at Dallas Cowboys and Sal Paolantonio at the Meadowlands for the Bengals-Jets.

Sunday’s highlights:

Eagles – Cowboys Rivalry: The Eagles and Cowboys’ rivalry takes another turn as they battle for the NFC East crown. Whether it’s the past or more recent moments like T.O.’s return to Philly as a Cowboy or McNabb’s 14-second scramble, the memories of this rivalry are vivid to those who played in it. Jeremy Schaap reports.

Philip Rivers Unmasked: The Chargers are one the hottest teams in the NFL on a 10-game win streak, led by quarterback Philip Rivers. Like all quarterbacks, Rivers doubles as a translator with a good portion of his work being done before the snap. This week’s Unmasked goes under the helmet as Rivers takes viewers through his thought process.

Mayne Event Awards: In this week’s Mayne Event, Kenny Mayne looks back at some of the best and brightest Mayne Event performances of the year in the Mayne Event Awards, with help from seven-time Grammy winner John Mayer, who will host and help hand out the hardware in categories like Best Famous Person, Best Actor and Best Story.

Jets’ Good Fortunes: Rex Ryan made a Christmas wish that came true, when the Colts sat many starters in the third quarter last week, which helped propel a Jets win. If the Jets’ produce a win versus the Bengals Sunday, they are in the postseason party. How do the Jets’ feel about their good fortune and the perception that they’re backing into the playoffs?

Saints and Vikings: Panic or Patience?: Two of the NFC powers for most of this season are now limping toward the postseason – the Saints losing two straight after a 13-0 start and the Vikings losing three of their last four. Is it time for New Orleans and Minnesota fans to panic or show patience? The Countdown crew has the answers.

No Huddle Awards: With the 2009 regular season coming to a close the Sunday NFL Countdown crew declares some award winners for the season. MVP? Coach of the Year? Rookie of the Year? Defensive Player of the Year? Find out who the crew feels deserves some hardware.

Start ‘Em or Sit ‘Em ESPN’s fantasy football: ESPN’s NFL experts will tell viewers which players to start or sit this weekend.

Berman, Carter, Ditka, Jackson and Johnson will pick the biggest games of the day and tell fans which players will make the biggest impact in NFL’s Week 17 action. The list of game picks will be posted on www.espn.com/sundaycountdown after the show.

NFL MATCHUP, SUNDAY 3 A.M. AND 7:30 A.M. ON ESPN

NFL Matchup with host Sal Paolantonio and analysts Merril Hoge and Ron Jaworski will preview the weekend’s games by bringing viewers inside the film room for the Xs and Os analysis of the matchups. The 30-minute program – taped each week at NFL Films in Mt. Laurel, New Jersey – highlights team strategy and game planning. This week’s features:

Eagles @ Cowboys: Cowboys Offense – Hoge reveals how Tony Romo and the Cowboys offense can attack the Eagles’ blitz.

Eagles @ Cowboys: Eagles Offense – Jaworski displays how the Cowboys used a defender to spy McNabb in their previous matchup, and how having one less defender rushing the passer or dropping into coverage can only help the Eagles’ explosive passing game.

Giants @ Vikings: Vikings Offense – Ideologies collide when Jaworski and Hoge debate about what the correct approach should be for the Vikings Offense as they head into the playoffs.

Giants @ Vikings: Vikings Defense – Hoge exposes how Vikings linebacker E. J. Henderson’s replacement, Jasper Brinkley, can be exploited in the passing game.

Bengals @ Jets – Hoge highlights how the Jets must break their tendencies to run the ball and throw the ball out of big personnel sets on first down.

Ravens @ Raiders – Jaworski illustrates how Baltimore must continue to use run looks and play action to create favorable throwing situations.

Packers @ CardinalsHoge uncovers how the Cardinals have used disguise and a little bit of chaos to shut down some of the best passing teams.

Patriots @ Texans – For the Texans to have any shot of making the playoffs this season they’ll have to lean on their playmakers, namely Andre Johnson. Jaworski unveils how the Texans must continue to use great play design to get the ball into Johnson’s hands as often as possible.

ESPN Regional Television and BIG EAST Conference Announce BIG EAST Network College Basketball Game of the Week Syndication Package
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – ESPN Regional Television, Inc., and the BIG EAST Conference have announced that their 2009-10 BIG EAST Network Game of the Week regionally syndicated basketball package will air in nearly 50 television markets covering 24 states. Once again, the BIG EAST Network Game of the Week has the most substantial coverage of any regionally syndicated college basketball network, with the designated market areas of the network’s affiliates covering nearly 50 million households (41% of the U.S.).
Sixteen of the nation’s top 35 television markets will have clearance, including New York; Chicago; Philadelphia; Washington DC; Boston; Tampa, Fla.; Orlando, Fla.; St. Louis; Pittsburgh; Indianapolis; Baltimore; Hartford, Conn.; Kansas City, Kan.; Cincinnati; Milwaukee; and for the first time, Los Angeles.
The package will consist of 12 BIG EAST Conference matchups, beginning Saturday, Jan. 2, with a battle between perennial BIG EAST powers and long-time rivals: undefeated Syracuse, ranked No. 5 in the nation, and Pittsburgh, a No. 1 seed in last season’s NCAA Tournament. Each of the BIG EAST Conference’s 16 member institutions is represented on the 2010 Game of the Week schedule.
“We are again pleased to provide our viewers with a consistent window for BIG EAST Conference basketball,” said Pete Derzis, senior vice president & general manager, ESPN Regional Television. “ESPN’s multimedia platforms continue to help deliver BIG EAST content to a significant base of college basketball fans. This season’s schedule of games is a fantastic representation of the BIG EAST Conference and its member institutions and will showcase the exceptional quality and competitiveness of the league.”
The games will be distributed nationally via the ESPN GamePlan pay-per-view package, which is available to fans via cable, DIRECTV and Dish Network.
“Providing our 16 member institutions and student-athletes with maximum television exposure is always one of our highest priorities,” said BIG EAST Commissioner John Marinatto. “With a reach that includes more than one-third of the nation’s households – and still growing — no regional syndicated television package provides more exposure than ESPN Regional’s BIG EAST Network Game of the Week. Fans in markets that stretch across the country can continue to count on seeing the best of BIG EAST basketball at the same time each week during the season.”
Along with Pittsburgh at No. 5 Syracuse on Jan. 2, the BIG EAST Network will feature preseason No. 23 Louisville at Pittsburgh on Jan. 16, No. 13 Georgetown at No. 8 Villanova on Jan. 17 and a Feb. 13 showdown between Cincinnati and No. 10 Connecticut. The Giants gave New England all they could handle, forcing QB Tom Brady to stage a second half comeback after the Patriots found themselves down 21-16 at halftime. It wasn’t until the fourth quarter when Brady hit WR Randy Moss for a 65-yard touchdown pass and RB Laurence Maroney delivered on a two-point conversion that the Patriots took control of the game and hung on for the historical win.

ALLSTATE SUGAR BOWL on FOX: Myers Interviews Urban Meyer; Tebow Featured On FOXSports.com Via “Star Cam”

MYERS SITS DOWN FOR ONE-ON-ONE INTERVIEW WITH FLORIDA HEAD COACH URBAN MEYER – Before Tim Tebow and the Florida Gators take the field to battle the unbeaten Cincinnati Bearcats in the ALLSTATE SUGAR BOWL this Thursday, Jan. 1, (8:00 PM ET) FOX Sports reporter Chris Myers will sit down with Florida Head Coach Urban Meyer.  Earlier this month, Meyer announced his resignation due to health reasons but quickly changed his ‘resignation’ to a ‘leave of absence’ and expects to be on the Gators sideline when next season opens.  But how will he do it?  Myers will talk to Meyer about what went into Urban’s decision, his current health and what the head coach sees in the future for himself and the University of Florida football program.  The one-on-one interview will be taped on Thursday and shown during FOX’s BUILT FORD TOUGH BCS pregame show.

Inside the NFL on SHO – Jones says Cowboys ‘better off in years to come if we can keep Wade Phillips as head coach’

NEWS, NOTES AND QUOTES FROM WEEK 17 OF

INSIDE THE NFL ON SHOWTIME®

Dallas Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones Discusses Future of Wade Phillips and Collective Bargaining

NEW YORK (Dec. 30, 2009)—Jerry Jones, owner of the Dallas Cowboys, joins James Brown, Cris Collinsworth, Phil Simms and Warren Sapp this week on INSIDE THE NFL on Wednesday, Dec. 30 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on SHOWTIME to discuss the coaching status of Wade Phillips and the collective bargaining agreement.

INSIDE THE NFL is being produced by CBS Sports and NFL Films with new episodes airing on SHOWTIME every Wednesday during the NFL season through February 10, 2010.  Pete Radovich serves as coordinating producer. The executive producers are Sean McManus, President, CBS News and Sports, and NFL Films President Steve Sabol.

Below are excerpts transcribed from this week’s episode:

(Jerry Jones on coaching status of Wade Phillips)

Cris Collinsworth: You haven’t said Wade (Phillips) is coming back. As the decision maker of the Dallas Cowboys, is that a bit intentional to keep the pressure on this football team as they go into the playoffs?

Jerry Jones: There is no need to because this team is motivated without me having to say, ‘Well I say our coach is going to be back.’ What is the case, and they understand that, is that we are going to be a better football team if we don’t make a coaching change. If I look back over the last 10 years and I need to re-do the last 10 years in varying areas, I look at the revolving door we’ve had with coaches here and that takes its toll. That takes its toll on the top personnel you have, on the schemes you run, so continuity would be important to me. There is no doubt the Dallas Cowboys would be better off in years to come if we can keep Wade Phillips as head coach.

(On Indianapolis Colts taking out their starters)

Phil Simms: I came down here today and I was ready to argue that the Colts did the right thing. That was my first thought, 14-0 they earned the right to do what they think was best for the football team. But as I watched that game, I changed my mind. I saw those players and I started thinking about what they have done over the years, what they have built. They can handle the pressure, the scrutiny that comes with being undefeated. And when I saw their faces on the sideline, I said, ‘Wow, I think they made a mistake.’ They should have gone for it.

Collinsworth: As a former player I was thinking I don’t know what I would have done on the sideline. I probably would have gone in the game. Really, I probably would have said, ‘I don’t care what you said’ …I would have said, ‘are you kidding me? We have a chance to be considered the greatest football team of all time.’ Think about what we do with the 1972 Miami Dolphins to this day. Every year we talk about them popping champagne. They are historically significant. The Indianapolis Colts because of the longer regular-season schedule, could have laid claim that they are the greatest football team of all-time. And all you have to do is let me finish a half. They only have to finish a half because they only have to play a quarter against Buffalo and win that game. Finish a half and we have the greatest team of all time.* * * * *

ESPN Regional Television Partners with Texas Bowl
ERT Acquires Ownership Interest; LSSE Will Continue to Manage Postseason Bowl Game
HOUSTON – ESPN Regional Television, Inc., a subsidiary of ESPN, has announced that ERT will partner with the Texas Bowl, effective at the conclusion of the 2009 Texas Bowl.
The Texas Bowl, which will continue to be played at Reliant Stadium, will feature a bowl-eligible team from the Big 12 Conference against one from the Big Ten Conference.
“We are excited to work with ESPN to take the Texas Bowl to an even higher level of performance for our community, our conference partners and the student athletes we serve,” said Heather Houston, Texas Bowl executive director. “ESPN brings a wealth of resources and experience that will help the Texas Bowl rapidly reach its full potential. We look forward to working with the professionals at ESPN on this exciting project and expanding our relationship with them in the years to come.”
The Texas Bowl was founded in 2006 and is Houston’s only collegiate bowl game. Through the past three years, the event has annually generated an average of $25 million in economic impact. The 2008 game featured Rice vs. Western Michigan and drew 58,880 fans, ranking it seventh among the most-attended non-BCS bowl games in the nation.
“The Big 12 is proud to partner with the Texas Bowl,” said Big 12 Conference Commissioner Dan Beebe. “The growth of and commitment to the Bowl by Lone Star Sports and Entertainment, ESPN and the Houston community has been phenomenal. The Conference and its member institutions appreciate the opportunity to have a postseason presence in Houston and look forward to building on the relationship with the Texas Bowl for years to come.”
“The Big Ten looks forward to facing the Big 12 in the Texas Bowl beginning in December 2010,” said Big Ten Conference Commissioner Jim Delany. “The Big Ten has played at least one postseason game in the state of Texas in every season since 1995, and we look forward to continuing that tradition in the city of Houston. With the number of Big Ten alumni in the state, playing a postseason game in Texas will provide another outstanding experience for our student-athletes, coaches and fans.”
“We are pleased to be working with LSSE on the Texas Bowl,” said Pete Derzis, senior vice president & general manager, ESPN Regional Television. “Our bowl tie-ins combined with being in one of America’s best stadiums provides us a terrific opportunity to continue to grow and establish this game as a premier bowl event.”
Widely recognized as a model startup, the Texas Bowl earned the American Marketing Association’s “Crystal Award” in 2009 for Houston’s best special event. The successful launch of the Texas Bowl has also helped the game’s charity partner, DePelchin Children’s Center, by generating millions of dollars in media value and more than $200,000 to support the center’s important work with youth and families in the Houston area.
As part of ESPN’s popular Capital One Bowl Week, which features 23 bowl games from Dec. 19 to Jan. 2, the 2009 Texas Bowl will feature Navy vs. Missouri and will be televised live on ESPN on Thursday, Dec. 31, at 3:30 p.m. ET / 2:30 p.m. CT from Reliant Stadium. USC head coach Pete Carroll, who led the Trojans to seven consecutive Pac-10 titles and two National Championships, will join ESPN to provide analysis about the Citi BCS National Championship on the network’s SportsCenter and College GameDay Built by The Home Depot Jan. 6-7.

Carroll will offer his insight on the pressure of playing in a National Championship Game and at the Rose Bowl, as well as coaching against Texas coach Mack Brown in the 2006 National Championship game. Carroll joined USC in 2001 and holds a 97-19 record (83.6%), second highest among active coaches with more than five years at the position.

Carroll will appear on the ESPN set at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena on the evening editions of SportsCenter Wednesday, Jan. 6; a special one-hour College GameDay Thursday, Jan. 7 at 7 p.m.; National Championship pre-game and halftime shows on ABC beginning at 8 p.m.; and for ESPN’s SportsCenter post-game coverage following the game.

“Coach Carroll’s experience in games of this magnitude will provide fans with invaluable insight on the thoughts going through the mind of a coach and the preparation involved to be in a position to win, adding a new element in the analysis of the matchup,” said Norby Williamson, ESPN executive vice president, production.

Carroll added, “I’m not only looking forward to seeing this great matchup between Alabama and Texas, but joining with the ESPN crew to offer my thoughts and perspectives after having played in the BCS Championship Game in the Rose Bowl.”

Carroll just completed his ninth year as the USC head coach with a 24-13 victory over Boston College in the Emerald Bowl. From 2002-08, Carroll led his teams to an unprecedented seven consecutive Pac-10 titles, appeared in a record seven straight BCS Bowls and recorded at least 11 victories in each of those seasons. AutoTrader.com Pre-Game Show

Rick Kamla and Steve Smith

Smith on the Cavaliers playing well defensively during their win streak: “What they are doing during this (five game) win streak is they are playing how they were playing last year defensively.  They are getting (defensive) stops, getting out on the break and having fun.  They are running and sharing the basketball.  At the beginning of the year they were kind of stagnant and there was a lot of LeBron-watching.  Now, the offense is flowing and there’s not a lot of standing (still).  They are rotating a lot of guys (around) and everyone seems happy with their role right now.”

Smith on the Hawks being considered one of the elite teams in the Eastern Conference: “Everybody talked about the (Eastern Conference) ‘Big Three’ (Boston, Cleveland and Orlando) last year.  Nobody wanted to put the Atlanta Hawks up to that elite level.  This year, (the Hawks) are (changing) that.”

Pete Smith, father of Atlanta Hawks forward Josh Smith joined NBA TV on Arena Link

Smith on which side of the family his son Josh gets his athletic ability: “I’m not going to cut my wife out of anything or not give her any praise (because) she has a lot to do with his character.  But as far as his athletic ability, it came from my side of the family.”

Smith on if his family knew that Josh would be able to succeed in the NBA after entering the draft out of high school:  “We knew that if he played the game the way it’s supposed to be played and with the ability that God blessed him with, we felt that he would be a great asset to the NBA.  He has shown that he’s ready to take on that task.”

Cleveland Cavaliers (95) @ Atlanta Hawks (84)

Announcers: Ernie Johnson, Kevin McHale and Chris Webber with Craig Sager reporting

Webber on a player getting hot from the field early in the game: “When a guy makes his first (few) shots, the basket is like an ocean in the second half.”

Webber on the Cavaliers defensive strategy against Josh Smith: “(The Cavaliers) want (Josh Smith) to shoot jump shots because you cannot meet him at the rim.  He’ll put you through the rim with the basketball.”

T-Mobile Halftime Report

Kamla and Smith

Smith on Hawks guard Jamal Crawford: “One thing you can’t do is have a scouting report for him because if you take away one thing he has so many different options.  You can’t do a behind the screen because he can shoot it. You can’t play up close because he can drive it in. He is one of those guys that has a knack for so many things.”

Smith on Cavaliers guard Mo Williams: “This year the basketball is in his hands. Right now he is getting his own shots even though they are threes the basketball is in his hands more.”

Kamla on Wizards guard Gilbert Arenas: “When Gilbert is driving, you know he is on his game.”

*****  *****  *****

Johnson on NBA TV reporter Craig Sager’s New Year’s Eve suit: “I’ve heard it’s made totally of confetti.”

McHale on the referees calling hand check fouls more now than when he played: “I would’ve fouled out in about three minutes the way they call (hand checks) now.  The hand check was a great equalizer if you had long, strong hands.  You could grab the guy by the hip and he couldn’t go anywhere.”

McHale on the lost art of pull-up shots in the NBA: “The ability to shoot the ball off the dribble is really a lost art in the NBA.  Everybody shoots three’s or tries to dunk it.  Guys like Jamal Crawford prove that if you can make that shot (off the dribble), you’ll have a home in this league for a long time.”

McHale on Cavaliers forward LeBron James’ ability as a passer: “(Defending James) would be different if he wasn’t such a willing passer all the time.  If you ran up on him and he took bad shots.  But he plays the game the right way so if you run up on him, he passes the ball.  If you don’t run up on him, he drives on you.  He just has a complete game.  His willingness as a passer sets him apart from a lot of other great scorers.”

Webber on the pace of LeBron James’ game: “He has to be a guy that everybody wants to play with because you know that you can have a fun time playing with him.  He works very hard and it doesn’t even look like he’s sweating.  His pace is very good for the game.  He doesn’t let you frustrate him.  He’s a tough guy to check.”

Webber on LeBron James’ unselfish play: “I hope that LeBron’s style of play is the template for the new players because he’s not even scoring but he’s keeping other guys involved.  Other scorers have to score or they don’t make an impact on the game.  He makes an impact even when he doesn’t take a shot.”

NBA TV’s Craig Sager interviews Cleveland Cavaliers forward LeBron James

James on the Cavaliers defense holding the Hawks to 10 points in the fourth quarter: “That is what we are about; we are about covering for each other. If one guy gets beat, the next man comes over and we just talk it out.  It was a great defensive performance on a night we just didn’t shoot the ball extremely well.”

James on the plan to defend Hawks guard Joe Johnson: “We know Joe (Johnson) is their centerpiece and where Joe (Johnson) goes that team goes so we stepped it up on the aggression as far as him coming off pick and rolls and coming off pin downs. We made him work for everything he was getting in the second half; great scheme by the coaching staff and great execution by the players.”

James on the Cavaliers turning their season around: “I think right now we are in a position where we know how we want to play every night. Some of those early losses came from us figuring how to play this year. I think we figured it out and we have been looking good as of late.”

NBA GameTime presented by Hyundai

Kamla and Smith

Smith on Cavaliers win over the Hawks: “I think with the Cleveland Cavaliers it has been their defensive presence right now. I love how Shaquille O’Neal, (Zydrunas) Ilgauskas and (Anderson) Varejao are not complaining about minutes which is allowing for JJ Hickson to help this team because you are playing four bigs and that is hard. Those guys being able to sacrifice those minutes and let others play has been a big key for me.”

Smith on Oklahoma City Thunder forward Kevin Durant: “If you look at his game, what’s left for him to do? Get stronger or maybe not when you score the basketball like that. He is handling the basketball very well like a 2-guard. He can get into the lane and shoot floaters. Then he is athletic enough to get into the paint and what I like is that he is staring to rebound the basketball and get four or five assists which is not bad. And then his age, he is still a young guy.”

Smith on the Washington  Wizards: “As far as scoring, Antawn Jamison had a good game. (Gilbert) Arenas had a good game and Brendan Haywood played well. What’s wrong with the Wizards is defense and bench play. They are not getting anything from the bench.  Where is Nick Young, JaVale McGee and those guys?  You have to get more bench play. Flip Sanders you have to play these guys more.”

Smith on Memphis Grizzlies forward Zach Randolph and Thunder forward Kevin Durant:  “You look at these guys because you can double-team them or even have a game plan on not letting them score but these guys do other things besides score. Zach Randolph obviously can rebound the ball and Kevin Durant does a little bit of everything. I love guys that can still get their average against any game plan.”

Smith on Wizards guard Earl Boykins: “We all love Earl Boykins, it is a great story and I think they had a chance to pick him up because everyone was injured. But now all these guys are back.  He is a combo guard. He can do whatever you want. He is the up and coming. Offensive – yes Earl can score but the Wizards don’t need any more offensive players.”

Cleveland Cavaliers center Shaquille O’Neal joined the studio team on Arena Link

O’Neal on Cavaliers’ defense:  “Either we played good defense or they weren’t hitting their shots. The good thing about this team is we have excellent resiliency. We never panic during certain situations. LeBron and Mo (Williams) do a good job of keeping us under composure. Whatever happens we will be well prepared for it.”

O’Neal on what the Cavaliers need to improve:  “We need to become more consistent. You have to have a lot of luck and we just have to believe. It starts right there with the belief. I’m always talking to the guys giving them certain stories, certain circumstances, certain situations and we know we match up well with anyone so it is all about us.”

O’Neal on meshing with teammates: “It is going pretty good. I call it the Alonzo Mourning factor. The last year we played together, he came to me and said I’ll do whatever it takes and I want to win. That is the same attitude I came in with this year. I’m only averaging 8-10 shots a game and which is fine with me. We all know LeBron is going to have the ball most of the time and when he gets off the ball it is our time to make him look good.”

O’Neal on teammate Delonte West: “He is very important to the Cavaliers team. He comes off the bench and gives most 2-guards fits. He can post up and shoot the jumper, he is ready to play.”

O’Neal on playing the Hawks: “We have a certain philosophy on our team:  beat the team you are supposed to beat, stay above .500 on the road and stay almost unbeatable at home.  We knew that these next two games are very important. We know that this is a young energetic team and we just want to come out and play our game. We felt we played our C+ game tonight but we were able to keep our composure and maintain. Tomorrow we will be looking to step it up.”

Smith on LeBron James: “The only thing left is starting to get those rings. At this age, arguable I think he is the best player that I have seen at 24. What he is doing at 24 is absolutely amazing.”
