ESPN Digital Media Recognized with the
2009 Best in Digital Sports Media Award
Sixteen Winners Honored with the 2009 Sports Business Awards
New York, N.Y. – ESPN Digital Media was honored with the 2009 Best in Digital Sports Media Award by the SportsBusiness Journal and SportsBusiness Daily. The award was presented live at a special ceremony held Thursday, May 28th at the New York Marriott Marquis in Manhattan.
ESPN Digital Media was recognized as part of the Sports Business Awards program, presented by Street & Smith’s SportsBusiness Journal and SportsBusiness Daily, the two leading publications on the business of sports. The Sports Business Awards recognize excellence and outstanding achievement in the sports industry for 2008.
ESPN Digital Media was chosen from five nominees for Best in Digital Sports Media including, in alphabetical order, Fantasy Sports Ventures, Sporting News Today, Turner Sports and Yahoo! Sports. It was a repeat win for ESPN Digital Media, which won the Sports Online of the Year award at last year’s inaugural event.
Taking a broad view of the business, ESPN Digital Media saw gains for ESPN360, and its mobile and interactive platforms. Developing original online programming like “Mayne Street,” and deepening its reach into niche and international areas through acquisitions and content agreements, helped make ESPN a daily destination for fans. Additionally, ESPN Digital Media achieved double digit percentage growth in many other key digital metrics, including average time spent and video consumption on ESPN.com, total audience on ESPN Radio.com and participation in ESPN fantasy football and baseball leagues.
Awards were presented in 16 categories. “With the success of the inaugural Sports Business Awards last year, we decided to expand our program and recognize even more excellence in sports business,” says Richard Weiss, publisher of the SportsBusiness Journal. “The winners and nominees being honored tonight represent those at the forefront of the sports industry.”
